single turbo dyno fest results!
We had five different single turbo FD's on the same dyno, same day, same tuner (Steve Kan) last weekend here in Florida. Besides my GT4082, there was an Apexi RX6, 60-1, T04e and GT40R. I would have liked a few more turbos in the mix but the results are interesting none the less. The GT40R's results were less than spectacular, not due to the turbo, but to a substandard engine with low compression.
The 40R did produce boost sooner than the 4082 and I'm sure it would have continued that way had the engine been healthy. My own engine, while not injured, is less than perfect. Apparently the mixture of Atkins apex seals with their smaller corner seals, and used rotor housings in good condition are not a good mix. It allows for compression blowby in a nutshell, something that's audible to those in the know such as Rolo and Jesus Padilla who were in attendance (and Steve too). Undoubtedly, I'd produce stronger numbers with better spool with a fresh, well built engine and new housings. My exhaust manifold primaries are quite large as well, larger than the current GReddy T78 manifold. Smaller primaries will waste less energy through expansion and help with spool as well. There's always something, right? Split was kept at 14 degrees. There's probably another 10hp messing around with split. One thing to note is the dramatic increase in midrange torque. I compared a dyno run I did a while back where I tuned with Steve's session. At one point I'm making about 60hp more in the midrange. Crazy. Car is much faster than before and a beast between 4 and 8K. Notice my power doesn't fall off past 7K like everyone else. This is due to the lower intake manifold being ported. I only did about the last 5" and it took me an hour to do. A good mod.
I've labeled each turbo next to it's peak hp reading number at the top. Steve tunes for 11:1 a/f ratio.
It's no wonder people say the RX6 is a great street turbo. I don't start to surpass it until after 4K rpm. All turbo numbers are within 2psi. I believe the 60-1 maxed out at 14psi while everyone else was around 16. No dyno graph for the T04e as I left before I could get a printout of that tuning session. I believe it maxed out at 330rwhp due to boost controller issues.
Anyway, enjoy and observations welcome.

michel my rx6 was running 14psi and i hit better numbers than that actually. i got 351.8whp and i believe it was about 299.6 torque. not suure on the torque number but it was above 296 and below 300. i am sure about the whp number though because harrison wont shutup about him beating my car by one horsepower! steve said i would have been able to hit about 370 whp but i was having some injector breakup and i didnt want to push my luck anymore that day.

We just dynoed our stage 1/2 turbo kit today in our customers car. We made 475rwhp at 19.5psi of boost and 434rwhp at 17psi. The reason why this is a stage 1/2 is because our stage 2 turbo kit comes with the 3.5" dp where as this one uses the 3" dp so there're some restriction when we were approaching 470ish rwhp range and doesn't gain much with the boost level higher than 19psi. I'll post the dyno sheet later today.

Here're the dyno sheets. The pulls were on race gas because we tuned the car upto 16psi on pump gas on the street and decided to see what #'s we were getting on the dyno so we decided to put some race gas in and headed to the dyno for some tuning. A/F ratios were very rich (10.3:1) using race gas at lower boost setting because of the specific gravity and I didn't want to lean it out just to show better #'s

That turbo kit is our stage 1 turbo kit which should give faster spool up than this manifold. They're both designed to peak torque at 6500rpm but using a smaller turbo in the stage 1 kit. They both run the t-series turbo.

Steve, that is a nice turbo kit. Those numbers are what I'd expect to see from a fully done single turbo RX7. Congratulations on a nice kit.
I'm interested as to why the previous #'s at the top of the page are so low as well. We have RX7s with nothing special pushing out well over 400 rwhp. I will be dynoing my tII (total cost of buildup, including price of car < 10k) when tristate gets the dynojet in. I will post results then.

Honestly, I couldn't tell you much why those cars were producing lower #'s than expected since I was the one that tuned them. I can only get as much as the engine/turbo allowed me. Some was probably due to leaky compression, some could be weak ignition etc... I know that the temperature in FL when I tuned them was much cooler than today when I tuned this car. Room temperature at the dyno was 95F and was very humid due to a major storm that came by early this week. I think the RX6 turbo kit dyno #'s were right on what I would expected but other turbo kits seem a little low for the turbos they were using. If I remembered correctly, some of them were using generic manifold that wasn't designed for power, but rather for fitment. I spend several hrs calculating manifold length, runner size to provide high exhaust velocity w/o too much tubulence/back pressure etc... so I'm glad that I did my homework right the first time and it turned out what I was expected.
Also, I didn't spend too much time fine tuning this car on the dyno (which is why its not as smooth as it could be) because of the cost ($150/hr) so I only made a total of 9 runs there at different boost level just to get some dyno #'s out. Those #'s on pump gas (8psi, 14psi, 17psi) should be higher since race gas is harder to burn and usually makes less hp than pump gas.

(BTW I build header's for a living)
What you come up with on paper and what actually works are two different things!
Trial and error, dyno time,& track time is what you should use as your guide.
