rx6 installed!...questions
After five months of robbing liquor stores and buying rx7 parts, I have finally completed my rx6 install. I rolled her out of the garge, put the key in the ignition and sat there for about thirty minutes. After my stomach settled down, we turned on the video camera and turned the ignition....to my surprise it cranked right up, hooray!
Okay, now the fun begins...she idles at 2000 rpm, and after about one minute, smoke started rising from the vicinity of the turbo. It smells more like hot metal than anything. I was wondering if there is a normal burn in time for these things, has anyone else experienced this? Question #2, why is it idling so high?
Oh, I guess I should list what I have been doing for the past five months:
RX6 kit, PowerFC, new 850cc secondaries installed in primaries, RP Competition fuel pump, stock FPR, autometer electric fuel press and boost gages, greddy water pump and alternator pulleys, profec b II, greddy type s BOV and a PFS red intercooler (cannot afford a new one right now). Eliminated EGR, air pump, ACV, AWS and Double throttle ctrl.
RP was supposed to program the pfc to be close for my mods, but still waiting for datalogit to check the maps and go to the dyno.
Sorry for the long post, but i am pretty excited right now.
Regards,
Guner

Thx for the info on the smoking turbo. I was really worried it was not getting any oil. I guess I am a little scared of screwing up a $4000 turbo.
As for the idle thing, I did a search in the powerfc forum and voila. Going to check for vacuum leaks and disconnect the isc.

yeah the smoke is just the oil from your hands and the oil/cosmoline/whatever they put on the parts in the kit so they come out of the box shiny

I hope you have better luck than I did with my rx6 turbo I have virtually no miles on my turbo lets say 10 miles at most and my rear bearing failed on the dyno at the rx7 store I was talking with majestic turbo and have found out I am the 5 person to have this problem with the turbo. We think it is over spooling. So I hope yours lasts longer than mine I have switched turbos completely now.

damn, thx for the confidence building post. did apex'i offer to make their turbo right? or did they do the usual thing and say you should have payed some authorized dealer twice as much to do the install for you.

swapped from twins, wanted to make something streetable and reliable. had no idea i was getting into a gadget quest. i'm wondering if i'll ever haveall the parts needed for this project. probably should've done the ls6 swap, imiss my old reliable, simple, readily available parts, and cheap mustang.
back in the day, i could use a can of starting fluid to find vacuum leaks. anyone know a safe way to do this on a fd?

I had the same exact thing happen to me after i installed the rx6 kit, my idle was super high at around 1700 rpms, so i decided to swap out the new power fc for my old m2 stage three ecu just see what would happen. My idle went back to normal with the old m2 ecu. The problem was the power fc, and after some tuning from kd rotary it idles smooth as silk. The problem could definatly be a vaccum leak though, dont count that out. There are two or three nipples in the back of the upper intake manifold near the throttle body that can be hard to check and get to. I ended up taking the uim off and making sure all holes were plugged well. By the way, i have never had any problems with the turbo and i love this kit! Good luck.

That's good to hear. I guess i'll take the uim off again and reseal everything. I read a post somewhere and the guy said he had put his tb gasket on backwards? I was unaware of a wrong way to put these metal gaskets in. Does it matter which way they go on?

Try adjusting your idle first..
screw the adjustment screw under the TB all the way down.
Then adjust your idle with the throttle plate stop screw.. fine tune with the adjustment screw under the TB after that.
I had the same problem after my single conversion and removing all the emissions/air pump junk.
