Also, moving from the apexi to this bad boy is quite a jump......like moving from a 9mm to a M249

Goodfella, yes a LCDR is an O-4. The navy ranks always screw me up. Oh well, if everything were the same it would just be boring.
Max, the car looks great! How long until you should be getting tuned?

Thank for the props. Goodfella, and congrat on your Serve to your country! My detachment, "The East Coast Playas" and I are just doin our thing out here. BTW, if you think that our ranks are confusing, you should hear what a strange language the rest of our "Squid Speak" is.... arrhhhggg! ;-) But it's all good, as there is plenty of time and money getting banked to play with when we RTB. Hence my interest in this Dee's latest offering and Max's invaluable perceptions.
Speaking of...
Max, still trying to work out the dump tube plumbing? Are you going with a flex tube or slip joint? For what it's worth, the double slip joint my car's dump tube has convinced me that it's the way to go. Check out Burn's for availability.

What do you like about the slip joint setup that would have you prefer it to a flex joint?

Thermal expansion joints
Hey Max,
I had always assumed that flex joints/couplings do not have the same level of reliability that slip joints have over the long term. I tend to look alot at the engineering in aerospace/aviation as the standard for many mechanical concepts, and I found several applications of slip joints (including our GE-T700-401C engines) but never seen a flex joint use in a thermal expansion joint. Additionally, I originally had suspected that slip joints might leak, but after the couple of thousand miles on my dump tube, there hasn't been a hint of leakage.
All that all said, I'm hesitant to say that flex couplings are NOT suitable for these applications. Personally, I will continue to prefer (double) slip joint(s) in my builds.
So how's that for non-comittal!
As evident by the viewship count, lot of us are interest in you progress, so thanks again for sharing!

hey max, any updates, im curious to your feedback on this since my track car has the apexi RH6 and you used that before, so it will be a good comparison for me to hear if i ever need to get a new turbo.
I may have missed it earlier in this post or in a nother post, but why did you get rid of the apexi? did it blow or just wanted to try somthing new? ;-)

There are just few more things to finish up (rad mount, IC pipes, etc.), so I don't have it back yet. I'll post when that stuff is finished.
I blew my engine and damaged the turbine on the RX6. Rather than spend $2K on a new RX6 turbo, I decided to switch to a kit where the turbo can be serviced quickly and for a reasonable amount of money. I also wanted somethng bigger, since I wanted to raise my redline slightly and the RX6 seemed to choke the engine a bit at high RPM.

I've got lots of room, so I'll be using a larger filter. I might not switch until after I get the car back and start doing the break-in. I will just buy the longest filter that will physically fit at that point. No need to send the calcs, I've got a K&N catalog, too.

Find a way to mount the filter away from the turbo as well, the K&N flange will likely just fall apart from the heat if you clamp it right on.
Mine came apart even though there was a piece of silicone tube between the turbo inlet and the filter to isolate the filter from the metal. This was the 4" flange, 9" long tapered filter. A shorter one might not do it, but that long one was heavy enough to come apart after 45 minutes.

The new redline will be 8500 or 9K RPM. It's not going to be 12K or anything crazy.
Tyson, thanks for the tip about the filter. I want to find a way to remote mount a larger K&N to suck up some cool air, so maybe I will pursue that goal sooner rather than later.
