Pics of my new Dougnash setup

I picked up my Dougnash awhile ago, but never got around to scanning the pictures. Crispeed will probably chime in with some additional details about the tranny, but here are the basic details. It is a Pro-Shifted Richmond 4+1, with a Long Verti-Gate. Leonard Long is the founder of G-Force transmissions (another GREAT product), and built the shifters for these trannys. G-Force now uses the same case design as the Richmond for their tranny, which is great for DN owners! Why? See the beautifully machined aluminum that attaches the stock Rx-7 bellhousing to the tranny? That was custom manufactured by G-Force for use with their transmission -- which is the same case design. This is a 4" extension version, which moves the shifter back far enough that you do not have to remove the dash! You have to install a new input shaft ($$$ - also supplied by G-Force), but it is well worth the extra money for eliminated headaches. I had to cut the tunnel MASSIVELY, and have yet to build a cover for the opening. The shifter is ratcheting, up-shift only. You only move the T-handle backwards, forwards, backwards, etc to move from 1-5. No missed shifts! The tranny is snychroless, and instead uses dog rings and sliders. To quote long "If you can get it out of the last gear, it will go into the next gear". The tranny is not a true clutchless unit, but it will definitely shift without the clutch. My technique is to hold the car floored, and shift when the engine is unloaded slightly at the rev limiter -- I never clutch or let off the gas. This is an absolutely EVIL sensation. The gears are straight cut, so it is super noisy! It would be difficult to cary on a conversation with a passenger; I absolutely love it! I wish I had not blown my engine before I made it to the track for a measured analysis! Also, 5th gear is 1:1, so the car really tears through the gears. Downside is that top speed is reduced to 154 with my setup (highly gear bound) -- but makes it there in 13 seconds or so. I have this on videotape, and hope to post it soon! I can't stress how much cutting was involved, and the time involved to custom build a new tranny mount, etc. I hope I can post some results -- other than seat of the pants -- soon!

Hey George!
Also with your bell housing adapter the starter will clear the shifter linkage easier!
Liberty transmission carry most of the spare parts for the tranny now!

Thanks for the info on the parts, Chris! I also have to give Chris the credit for suggesting this transmission. I love it!
Yes, the starter completely cleared with no effort. I will have to get a smaller steering wheel, as there is only about 1/2" clearance -- just enough to remove a thumb or finger on an agressive shift or a tight turn.

How much was your trans, and what shop did you get it from?

I bought it used for $1200. It was just serviced before I purchased it, so it was a great buy. The adapter, input shaft, and related parts were easily another $1000. The best money I have spent on the car. I am told this thing can hold 1200HP and 1500FT/LBS! If it can hold half of that for twice the time, I will be happy! Chris, have you had any problems with yours? Broken sliders? Anything? I want to change ratios on mine once I get a feel for it on the track, but that is about it for now.

Mines was used behind a 1500hp nitrous 7sec beast!!!!
When I first installed it the 3rd gear was jumping out! I opened it and it turned out that the sliders and some of the dogs were worn out. I purchased a complete set of sliders and some extra ones just case I would ever need them. I could have sent the gears to Liberity to get the dogs replaced but after doing some research a lot of racers told me just to weld them up and re shaped them to the original shape. I thought that was a rig but it's been working so far without any problems.
The only thing I'm having problems with are the shifter linkage rods. They tend to bend and get out of alignment resulting in missed gears. I'm changing mines over to the solild 1/2 inch steel ones like those that come on the G-force tranny. Other than that I think it's the best money I've spent on the whole car!

Did I mention you rule? I must, once again, thank you publicly on the list. Chris was most generous to share his transmission secret with me, and was very specific in his advice. We are lucky, and humbled, to have someone willing to share the good stuff on the list!
Chris, that is great to hear about the history of your tranny and how it is holding up. I was VERY impressed with the design when I had mine split to swap input shafts (to accomodate the length for the adapter). By the way, I think I missed your fast run because I did not realize you were flirting with the 8's so closely! Amazing... Shame on the civic boys who strip their interiors for much less noble numbers. Any video of this conquest? Hehe.. I threw out a ton of my XXX video collection, and replaced it with the video of your previous best run.

What type of shifting technique do you use? I have been basically keeping the thing floored, and grabbing the next gear when the driveline becomes unloaded by the rev limiter. I am not sure how long the sliders will hold up to this but, dang, what a rush. Unforturnately I blew my engine before I made it to the track.
