Looking at Buying an FD with a single turbo conversion .

Well I took a drive around today .. and honestly it was a pig . my miata is faster then it .

it has an ebay To4e turbo http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/T3-T4...item588a993bc4

and a Power FC , and an AEM wideband it would lean out as it got to 5k rpm's when the car would start to get in boost ... the owner said the car needed a tune as it was going very lean asoon as it went into boost . he was also running I think he said like 30 pounds of boost .. isnt that crazy high?

it was 14.6 at idle and would be at 11 at 4k rpm , then as it dropped into the 10's the car started to pick up power , and then a sudden pop and he said it was the ECU cutting the engine . so effectively it was limited to a 5k power band

the ECU is a Power FC , which first I'd like to ask if it does that?

the china turbo is obviously suspect .

he's asking 8k for the car.

many things I want to ask .. is that turbo to big it seems like there is way tomuch lag ..

also it has a top mounted IC ...

Also it was idling at 2k rpm's .. could all this be fixed with a proper tune or is all this masking a hidden agenda

he didn't drive the cars he says he buys them from the auction and fixes them ... he says he put hte aem, power FC , and new turbo on the car.

aesthetically the car is in perfect shape .

here's a picture I snapped of the enginebay

how come?
http://miami.craigslist.org/mdc/cto/2619076803.html

the motor has 94,000 miles and just got a ebay single turbo kit. that motor will be gone pretty soon. that motor should had being rebuilt before going single, imo.

ebay turbos are crap, the price of this turbo doesn't even cover the cost of a decent turbo rebuilt kit.

What injectors size is the car running?

other than that if the body, paint and interior are in mint shape, you have your self a project.

there isnt enough fuel to run 30 psi with stock injectors,

do you know what size the stock injectors are on the fd?
Do you know what fuel pump he is running?
What fuel pressure regulator is on the car?

That car looks to be very, very hastily modified. I strongly recommending looking elsewhere. There are plenty of well-built, well-thoughtout single turbo FD's for sale here on this forum, especially if you're willing to travel. You will spend much more in not just parts but man hours and headaches attempting to put this FD back into a usable state than if you just buy a well functioning example from the start.

There is nothing more expensive than a cheap FD.

unless you have a lot of free time and money to work on a project, do yourself a huge favor and walk (run) away.

do you self a favor and don't buy ebay or imported low miles engines, for some reason 90% of them are in bad shape.

if you want to spend 8K, i suggest look in the 3rd gen for sale section here, you could find something running for that price, or a rolling chassis and pickup a fresh motor from one of the members here.

thanks that seems to be the plan know anyone with a fresh motor for a good price? also if I do a build from a shell I was thinking of maybe going single turbo from the start .. what size turbo is the general consensus as beeing good ..

that car had a 4.5k Rev limiter because of going lean so I dont know much about it .. is the car going into boost at 4.5k normal ? is that late ? seems like it was a whole lot of lag. I rather have a wider powerband than late power.. also if I replaced the turbo on the Original car would it be ok ? I'm new to rx-7's so if you're bored and wanna give me a crash course on single turbo's vs the twins ( I hear lotso f issues with the twins ) any info you can give me would be awesome

The entire engine bay looks like crap. I'd pass. You never know how messed up the car really is. You would be better off starting with a stock or properly set up car. I bet that motor will pop as soon as you take it home.

I think he unloaded it on someone else already , I'm just wondering if spooling at 4.5k is normal for a single turbo .

and how unreliable are the twins really .. I mean everyone here has a reason for ditching them for the single so I'm curious , I've done a little searching but there's only somuch time in the day you know .
