KKK, borg warner, Schwitzer, Holset are all part of parent company Borg Warner, so to say one is worse than the other is kinda silly, you essentially have the same parts in all of them. They all get their turbine housings out of a foundry in Sweden from Schwitzer for example. Garrett is separate from these. So your R85 is really no different than your KKK or funnier still your holset(sr) is no different than your KKK(sr).

I took it to get rebuild and the guy basically told me not to bother!!! Don#t know if he just beat the crap out of it or if these turbos don`t hold up. In any case he sold it to me under the pretense that he is going 20B. Now he just bought a R85 with my money.

Actually Borg Warner owns both Holset and and KKK along with schwitzer, turboloder, airwerks, and I'm probably even forgetting one or two others. The KKK turbos are designated as their performance turbos. I use a holset unit that I believe is the HE1 but am not possitive, possibly its the HC1...whichever its big and bad ***.

Just because one company owns them doesn't mean they are all built the same. I can tell you from experience that the SR Motorsports turbos that Ray claims are KKK, are in fact Holeset, which suck for reliability.

I agree with Ernie, I had a stage 1 and had to have rebuilds like clockwork. I sent it
to turbochargers.com and they said I got f*%ked hard. Said it was a holset that is
nowhere near as expensive or as good as a kkk. Sent it to majestic once, same opinion.
I had them make me a 62-1 and It was flawless over a year. I took it off to go to a larger
turbo. It sits on a shelf in my study- shaft as tight as the day I got it. I think garretts are
the ****- dependable and cheap[er].

If you have had a problem with a Holset turbo, then it's very judgmental to blame all other turbos of that brand for being of poor quality. Going by that I would never get another Garret turbo ever - but the truth is you can't compare the modern GT series with older TO4s. The technology is not the same.
If anything, Holset are known for their reliability. At least here in Sweden they're praised and are known to last the lifetime of the diesel engines they come on - there are no gasoline engine Holset turbos. That doesn't stop Volvo and BMW enthusiasts from using them. The HX40 and HX50 models are very popular among the 400-650 hp crowd.
I would put KKK, Schwitzer & B/W, Holset and Garrett at the same quality level if I compare contemporary turbos and turbos with similar design goals. If you have problems with bearings failing or seals breaking - there is probably a good reason, you're using it out of spec or simply abusing it. We can talk about anything from boost level, ill-adjusted blow-offs and oil pressure being a factor here.
BTW, the H1C that was mentioned earlier is quite old, it was replaced by the HX35 in the early 90s, almost 15 year ago. They're commonly used in the Dodge trucks with Cummins 6L. It was replaced by the HX35 and now the HY35.
