Intake info..

I was reading a thread and they were talking about Resources car with the t51rkai and they said the incredible amount of turbo noise/wistle was caused by modification to the intake track.. here is the exact quote..

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The reason it's so loud is because they've installed a insert with slots cut out inside the turbo inlet. The air moving through these slots make the noise.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyone have anymore info on this or pics? My t78 could use some more noise

Posible to make a inlet tube for my turbo that would cause simular sounds?

Not really sure whether it is possible. I'm sure you could get a t04s compressor cover that has antisurge ports in it and machine it to fit your compressor wheel.

Here is a better picture of the hks t51r inlet. It resonates the sound between the two layers of metal in the compressor housing.

Godzilla,

Honestly, if you like the sound get the turbo. Trying to mod up something to re-create the sound could result in you sucking up something into the compressor and destroying your turbo... Thus resulting in US getting no more vids of your car RUNNING!!

I mean... I'm sure something could be machined into the housing... but it doesn't sound safe...

If you machine something into the intel your filter is going to cover it up unless you run with no filter.

These built in ones are on the inside only and the filter doesnt cover them, your prob not going to be able to do anything like that. About the only way I can think of would be to cut off your inlet and have someone cast a new inlet and weld it to your compressor housing.

That is a "Ported shroud"-compressor inlet, thats why it looks like that!

You get a broader operating range on the turbo with
that.

I guess it's the same thing on the T51kai/spl...

"Ported Shroud" is correct, that’s what it’s called. It does and does NOT increase effiency. A ported shroud is designed to buffet surge when a turbo is at its upper limits. The ported shroud actually DECREASES effiency in most of the turbo's range, but adds to the upper right side of a turbo's flow map. So in essence, it increases a turbo's range, but only at the top, right side of the map island at a slight expense of effiency every were else. The upper ranges were surge happens is referred as choke flow...... a ported shroud increases flow here and fights surge. There is also a thing called inducer bleeds (those are the slits you see very close to the actual compressor blades) that’s a little window from the inducer to the inner portion between the intake part and the shroud part. They are not always added to a ported shroud. The inducer bleeds help with surge also, it also smooths air flow (at the upper limit again) and helps broaden range (again, at the top end). All in all its not necessary for us...... not many people run these big turbos so far up in the pressure ratios that surge occurs. So giving up the fat part of the map that most actually use is a waste, unless you really dig the sound it makes .

You could take any compressor housing and just machine slots from the outside of the inlet throat to the inside near the inducer blades,,, then weld on a shroud around it. You probably should have the lip machined off the inlet and have one machined onto your new shroud.

Just re-read this thread and disscovered I used "right" when I should of said "left" part of the map, were the surge line exist.
