I need to rebuild my 60-1 - any good shops?

Hey guys -

My car is down right now in the midst of a big buildup, and I want to go ahead and get my turbo rebuilt. There is quite a bit of play in the shaft, and the compressor blades have rubbed the walls of the compressor housing a bit.

I had a stock FC turbo rebuilt and upgraded a while back by Majestic Turbo in Tampa, and had an abosolute nightmare with those people. I sent it back like 3 or 4 times - they could never build a turbo that wouldn't blow oil on the exhaust side, took FOREVER to get it from them (lots of "UPS screwed up", "yours is next in line" type BS). I definitely don't want to go through that again!

I've talked to Turbo Specialties in Birmingham, and they estimated about $375 or so for a basic rebuild, more if various parts were damaged. I trust Turbo Specialties - I've visited the shop before, and it's a classy operation.

Anyhow, any thoughts/ideas/experiences? I'm not looking to upgrade or change it any - I was VERY pleased with how the turbo performed.

Or, if anyone has a good 60-1 sitting around...

Thanks,
Dale

I would send it to turbonetics! I've had some bad experiance with small back yard turbo builders (Texas rebuilds ect). I had my CT26 Mr2 turbo upgraded there a few years ago! nice work, i'm planing on buying there 62-1 for my new 13BT. Good luck!

I'll give Turbonetics a call today - thanks for the tip!

I got a chance to inspect the turbo yesterday. The turbine wheel and housing look fine, but there is definitely significant slop in the bearings, and the compressor wheel touched the bottom part of the compressor housing. The compressor wheel doesn't look too bad, but I do want to replace it. I think the compressor housing can be reused as-is.

I have rebuilt turbos before, with mixed success. Has anyone tried to do it themselves? I think the biggest thing that a turbo shop can do that a do-it-yourselfer can't is balance the assemblies. But, I have heard some conjecture that the various rotating parts are self-balanced. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Dale

If everything is rebuildable inside the turbocharger, then it should be fairly resonable to rebuild Do you know if the turbo has a 360 degree thrust bearing in it?

I seriously doubt it has a 360 deg. thrust bearing - I haven't pulled the compressor wheel off to get down to the thrust bearing to inspect it, since I want to keep the cartridge assembled for post-mortem by a turbo shop .

Looking at new bearings, a new 60-1 compressor wheel, and balancing, would you mind giving me an estimate? If you'd rather give me a private estimate, just PM me.

Thanks,
Dale

Id be interested in hearing that estimate.

I'm in the same exact boat, but with a T04S. A little shaft play that rubbed the housing and some smoke. So I probably will need a new compressor wheel ans bearings also.

Let me know what you find out. PM me if its top secret
