holset vgt turbo on rew in fc no boost yet but soon

I am using the stock fc coil with fc2000 ing amp. Car seem to run very well on this setup. I tried to take vid today of a 1st gear pull. Very hard to hold camera and drive. I will post it a little later.

due to great amounts of snow car is stored in garage. Getting body work done now so it will be ready to hit the road come spring. I do take the car out for small spins around the block. Great deal of traction issue with cold tires and instant spool of this turbo. Currently running 9psi. Car is not legal for the road so I cant get any high load testing done. But spring time I will have all the results of this turbo. I have a couple of them so I am gonna try to see its limits. My quess is I have around 300whp now by injector duty calculations.

It looks like the exhaust housing can actually squeeze between the chassis and the lower intake manifold- now I am even more interested in this turbo.
Many years ago I picked up a Ford 6.0 VGT turbo, but there was no way it was fitting there.
Looking forward to more results.

I have the older 6.0 turbo ('03). IDK exact specs, but when I measured it last it was GT37 compressor and I recall the exhaust wheel major was about the same as my p trim with a little larger exducer. I was considering having my P trim exhaust housing machined for it.
The real "size" of these diesel turbos (and Garret GT line in general) is the compressor and exhaust housing sizes not the wheels. The ungainly exhaust housing coupled with the huge hydraulic/solenoid actuator on the center housing means the turbo would have to fit infront of the engine.
On the ford 6.0 turbo due to the many points of contact in the many aero fin pivots and unison ring that make up the variable geometry there could be a real issue with sticking due to high egts on a gasoline/rotary engine due to the clearances in these moving parts.
This is why the Holset appeals to me. Once linear moving part integrated into the oil and water cooled centerhousing. Sounds much more reliable.

Hey! i just got this turbo the other day. I am glad to see it is working well for you, because when i picked it up, the size of the hot side had me worried it wouldnt fit. any plants to try a wastegate actuator to control the vanes? What power/ boost are you planning to shoot for?

The car has being working great. Turbo spool nice and car has a super quiet idle/cruise thanks to the vgt. Running 15psi now but I am having fuel issues. Need to upgrade pump and injectors. I can get 7psi by 3200rpm and 15 by 3800rpm on a 10psi spring in the wastegate. I have 4 850cc in now and walbro pump with 880cc of meth. Car is leaning out at 5000rpm and I am not sure if its the pump or lack of injector. Going to throw in second walbro for now to see it helps. I will to to get some vids of the car doing some pulls.

I just have a spring holding it closed. Exhaust pressure push the vanes open and the spring pull it back when there is low exhaust flow. Very simple and effective. I know I could get it to work better with some kind of actuator.

I always had the idea to use the dual port big *** actuator from the 20B sequential setup and connect the vacuum side behind the thottle, so the vanes are pulled open if the differential pressure over the butterfly is raising, for exemple 120mph cruisng or so

no sign of any heat damage my egt have been up 900c (1650f). They usually stay around 800c. I am gonna try to get on the dyno when I can find one. There are no dyno in my area. So I need to trailer the car to one. I do want to improve the vgt system but I want to see if the turbo will hold up first then mess with. I don't want to make the vgt to active. It would make a tuning nightmare with the different loads that the exhaust flow would make. With the spring setup it is very consistence with the engine load. The more exhaust flow the more it opens.

I hit the dyno today with some issues. Low end power was good but could not get a full pull in I had some bad ignition problem. Car would not go past 5000rpm. It did make 267whp and 261 torque at 5000rpm this is at 15psi. The graph was climbing hard to just could not solve 5000 rpm problem.

Found the problem. Had overboost protection set to 1bar(idiot). I running on the waste gate with a 9 psi spring but getting boost creep. So I will get some more road tuning done and try to find a dyno again.

I can reach 23psi by 3900. It might be more but my ecu only has a 2.5 bar map sensor. So the datalog flat lines at 23psi. Still working on the tuning so I have only done pulls to 4500rpm and working my way up. I also upgrade fuel system. Going from 4x850cc to 850/1680cc combo and 880cc of meth too.

Hope to get to the dyno soon. I think a properly sized turbo will work just as good as this one. I have 3 of them that I got for free. So that is why I trying them out. So far I like the way it performs and the super quiet low load driving keep the cops a way.

pic of a datalog show quick boost
Getting the bugs worked out of my turbo system. Slowly tuning away. Boy can this thing spool up nice lol. Got my fuel rail made up. Just need to install them and see what the upper part of the rpm range will look like. So far I am very happy with the results. 22.5psi @ 3600 rpm at half throttle lol.
