Holset turbo anyone
#28
I'm running a Holset HX55. It spools pretty fast. For a 500-550 HP and mid 10s you can't beat it. Here's a vid in 2007, you can hear it spooling on the line.

cheers for the vid!
HX55 must be a beast!
I stillowuld like to know what housing sizes are available on the HX40 or H1E. Then I might be able to check what I am getting for my RB26 motor.. If anyone can shed light on this it would be much appreciated.
Thank you

the H2D is an absolutely massive turbo! It has a 92 mm Compressor wheel with a 62 mm inducer. The turbine wheel is 86 mm with a 77 mm exducer. its a .89 a/r i believe. with stock ports you wont be happy with that turbo i dont think.

Catch has just informed me that he thinks all non-wastegated H1E's are T3 flange fitting and ony the internally gated version have t4? Does this follow to the HX40 also? If so how much of a job is welding up the wastegate? Can you just remove the actuator and weld it shut or do you need to fab some kind of blanking plate carefully? Last thing I want to do is upset the flow inside the turbo! Another bit of hassle though! I am sure I had seen HX40's on a T4 with no gate?
Good job he said as I could have gone a bought the wrong thing assuming it was T4!
Thanks for al the psots.. Some good power figures as well!
Roll on my single turbo!

yeah is everybody with an HX35 just getting the T4 and welding their wastegate shut? And are those T4's divided or undivided? I'm just wondering what the best way to proceed with an HX35 on a 2nd gen HKS undivided log manifold would be.
and more random searching on the internet says that on HX35 at least, the 9 cm ^2 (common on HY35 I think) is .48 A/R, 12 cm ^2 housing is .63 A/R, and the 16 cm ^2 housing is close to a .82 A/R , but that was from a random Hondatech post so take it or leave it.

guy's If what you say is correct.. about the approximate housing size to A/R then what on earth does the 22cm housing equate to? I was recommended a 0.84 AR for the RB26 and then told I needed a #16 housing on the HX40 so that certainly ties up? I was also recommended somewhere around a 0.96 -1.05A/R for the Rotary. From the numbers above I am guessing a #22 housing must be around 1.15a/r? Surely that has to be to big for a street port? Just getting a few mixed answers that's all!
Thanks

Hey Moremazda, This goes more along with what I have been recommended by other sources.. But is definately seems to depend where you get your info..! So that would mean if I am sticking with my Stock port for now and want to keep a good spool time I would ideally want a #18 or maybe 20(if that exists) housing? Definately no bigger than a 22 though.. That is starting to sound a little big now!? I have also heard that the Holsets spool quick compared to other comparatively sized units?

yeah thats where i bought a housing from and when it got here it was a T3 with a 3in vband. and i called them about and they werent very friendly or helpful and said that they didnt have a T4 non wastegated flange, but if anyone has any more luck in finding one let me know.

Moremazda.. What bhp you getting at the hubs?
I am just waiting on some info from a guy in Puerto Rico (yiyito/gigito turbo services??). He reckons he can build a holset to almost any spec I want! although the initial suggestions that came back were a whole lot of T3! So I have gone back saying I need T4 to see what he comes back with.. He aslo recommends the H1E over the HX40. At least there are some common themes coming up so we are headng in the right direction!
Anything you find out please post it up!

Okay Guys' I have more info fomr a new supplier I have been speaking to!
Apprently on the Holset turbo's anyhting below 19cm is T3 and 19cm or above is available as T4?? anyoe got anything on a T4 smaller than the 19cm? possibly that only applies to the Hx40 or H1E?? I am sure I had seen a 16cm T4 somewhere but I could be wrong.
Also this guy recommends the 19cm for a stock port motor reckons boost would start 3200rpm where as on a 22cm housing you would be looking more like 4500rpm.. So that ties up with what soe of you guy's have said. He aso does a custom unit based n the H1E using a modified Garret housing with the Holset wheel to get a lower 0.84 A/R on a T4 flange. I might go that route for my RB26 motor!
What do you reckon?
Cheers
