Help a new guy with turbo/wg/etc.
Hey guys, I just spent quite a bit of time reading up on various setups in the forum, and gave me quite an insight. I'm relatively new to rotaries and single turbo setups, but I'm learning.
I have an old datsun that I'm putting a stock 13b-re motor into. The RE block is stock, seals look good, etc. I got the mounts finally figured out and done, and now I need to slap a turbo on it. I can't use stock twins because they won't clear the frame rail, so I'm forced to switch.
I've been pricing out and looking at various options, and my goal is simple: about 300-320 crank hp, don't need anything more than that. I have no smog restrictions, so the block is getting a lot of block off plates, and I don't have to worry about catalytic converters and smog pumps. The car is a weekend racer that should also be streetable
I'm currently looking at garrett t04e with .6 a/r cold side, either 60 or 60-1 trim, p-trim exhaust with .82 a/r. The inlet is 4", and exhaust is on center 3". My other option, presented yesterday because of a discount price, is a garrett gt32, with .6 cold, .81 hot, and an internal wastegate (supposedly it's pretty good).
Fuel is fed from a summit fuel cell through an external walbro 255lph pump going through an 8an line setup. I'm having stock primaries bored to 720 or 850, and secondaries either bored to 850 or replaced with 1300 or 1600 cc units. I'm looking at getting an aeromotive fpr unit. The system is to be managed by a microtech ems
So, my questions are:
-what turbo setup should I look for? I'm looking for more midrange power than top end, and for a while I doubt I'd be pushing more than 12psi
-is there anything I should do additionally for fuel?
-should a tial 38mm wg be enough for such a mild setup? I'm reading about boost creep, and it's creeping me out
One last thing - I'm on a limited budget, so I can't afford a $600 hks 50mm wastegate and such.
Thanks!

well first off, i would say dont go with bored out injectors, known to fail. i would get the stock 850s, and 1600s.
for the horse power your looking for a t04e is little to big IMO. i would go with something smaller, like a t04b, even that is good for 400(or more), at 15psi.
im sure there are more opions about the turbo.
also i would becareful with that motor you have, make sure it has good compression. if it was me i would just do a rebuild myself, that way you know you have a good motor.
good luck
ps: show some pics of the project.

I can't use stock manifolds from either a t2 or a re/rew because they will hit the strut tower and the frame rail. I have to make a custom unit like an HKS and route it forward.
I'll see if I can get pics later

Question: any opinions on the GT32 unit? personal experiences? Pros and cons? After looking at the specs of the unit, it reminds me of a t04b in specs, except that it has an internal wg

I am not aware of anyone using a GT32 with a rotary. I would think it would be too small, but for the power levels you are shooting for it may not be. In contrast, people use two GT30R units in twin turbo setups
if i was in your position, i would want an internal wastegate, simply because it is cheaper.
where are you seeing GT32 Specs? I did not see them on atpturbo.com, which is where I usually go for the GT info.

go to http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob.../downloads.jsp and look at the e-catalog. my source told me he could get alternative size housing (ie. .84 or .96) for that turbo, although that's not listed on garrett's site.
Will .84 be sufficient, or should i be going to .96 for exhaust? What internally wastegated turbos would you recommend for the listed applications? I'd say 300-350 crank hp is my target goal. I'm also looking at t04b units, because of their much cheaper costs, but those still require an external wg.

a couple more questions:
-I want to have more mid-range power (roadcourses) rather than top end. Would .84 a/r be sufficient, or should I go for .96? or would I be choking the setup at 7k rpm with .84?
-are there any significant downsides to on-center turbine housing vs. tang offset?
-which aeromotive fpr would you guys recommend:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...rt=AEI%2D13109
or
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...rt=AEI%2D13101
Thanks again!
