changing turbos....possibly. mpt70 to bw s366
So my car is over at kilo's shop in Orlando and it's getting tuned. He tuned it first only to 5900rpm and 17psi because he noticed a strange vibration in the motor and also he didn't want to push a motor with stock seals and no strengthening.
Well being that's it's kilo, I took his advice and had him open it up, find out what the vibration was, add some super seals, and strengthen the motor with added dowl pins. Well turns out I had two different year rotors in the motor so anyways now the motor is back together and ready to dyno however i've already spent a small fortune doing all this through kilo and started thinking about things that may happen in the future.
Well I started thinking about my Masterpower t70 and how so many people in the racing scene have told me that the Masterpower unit is kind of a hit or miss turbo and it's really just a second class turbo just a few steps above an ebay turbo.
Well this lead me to think about my luck and how probably I would have this turbo for about 500 miles before it went out on me. Well if this were to happen I wouldn't want to put another Masterpower turbo in the car but all the other t70's out there are different sizes so an obvious adjustment to the tune would have to take place which means I would have to bring it back to kilo in Orlando.
Anyways today I called a few places in Florida and got some advice from world wide racing and they seem to think a bw s366 would be the perfect replacement turbo. I know the BW turbos are pretty popular these days so I don't doubt it's a good turbo but I was just wondering what you guys think? I can get this turbo for 1200 bucks which is about 300 bucks more expensive than a turbonetics t70 from ebay.
Anybody with some advice or feedback on the turbo would be great! I have a half bridge so spool with the bigger qtrim shouldn't be an issue. I also believe it's a .83 or something like that hotside. The t70 had a .96 hotside.
Thanks for any info you can give.

Oh also I've heard that the 66mm wheel on this turbo with the extended tip actually moves more air than the 70mm t70 wheel is this correct? Should I be expecting around the same hp with this turbo?

the s366 will honestly outflow the MPT70 more than likely. i used to use an mpt70 on a half bridge s4 TII setup that was blow-thru carb and i absolutely looooved it! i too ran 17psi and it was just retarded on the street so i'm not really sure why you would spend more money on ANOTHER turbo when you haven't even tapped the potential of the one you have.
Master Power is good stuff. it is in no way comparable to lame *** ebay turbos! never had an issue out of mine and i actually got it second hand from a guy that had a motor blow and it still worked flawlessly. it did just over 400rwhp at 14psi on his and i never got to dyno it on mine. no reason you cant do over 500whp @ 20psi or less with proper tuning. seriously
just my thoughts

The problem is I do to much research on the web I guess. I hear conflicting stories about the turbo. They all say it produces great power but some say it lasts along time some say it only lasted 500 miles or so and with my bad luck I feel like I would be the guy that it would only last 500 miles on. Then I would have to buy a new turbo (non masterpower of course) and it would be a different size even even if it was a turbonetics t70 and so that would mean I would have to bring the car all the way back to florida to have kilo tune it again. Of course then maybe it wouldn't, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to gamble like that and potential be out a **** load of money. A little money spent now in this case will be a ton saved later if this turbo decides to bite the dust prematurely.

I think you've got a good line of thinking in the "build it once" category, but I honestly think you should ring everything you can out of your current turbo. How many miles/dyno pulls has the turbo seen already? Its probably easily close to 500miles as it sits no? I'd guess, if its not smoking/rattling/anything crazy at this point that you'll get some good life out of it.
I'm not in your shoes with what you've spent/can afford etc. though so its ultimately up to you, but I've been down the road of changing parts chasing down "internet predicted" future failures all for nothing, or to only have other components fail in the meantime. Just keep on trucking(wankeling) and be happy with the POWAH!

You are right though, maybe I just need to be happy with what i've got. Isn't that like one of those life long lessons we all are supposed to learn? lol. I can just imagine the heartache and pain that will come from a premature failed turbo and the waste of money/time/headache not to mention downtime (already been 2 or 3 years since it was on the road) that would take place just because I decided to skimp on the turbo.

Now whats the deal with not being able to find any really good posts on the bw s366 turbo on the forum? I did a search for s366 and there is maybe a handful, non of which are that great. Would people usually just skip that turbo and go s372?

the MP T70 never died, it is now getting used on my buddies stock port FC. it's a great turbo seriously!!! but borg warner is the new hot ****
if you're looking for info on the S3xx series you need to look in the honda and evo world.

**** man, see then you come on here saying it's an awesome turbo and it makes me wanna try out the mpt70. Do you think it would be a good turbo for higher boost, I'd say anywhere from 22 to 25psi? Damnit, I'm torn.

man if you're already thinking about a borg warner just go ahead and do it that way you won't have that little worry in the back of your mind. i have dealt with a good few MP turbos but it does seem others may have had issues. then again i ALWAYS use restrictors in the oil feed lines. it seems the most problem i see is people get oil smoke or the oil seal fails.
regardless, i have also been messing with the borg warner tubos now and i'm very impressed with how awesome they are. my day job is a diesel tech and we almost never have to replace the borg warner units that have literally 300k + miles on them running 40psi non stop!
so when it comes to the borg warner stuff there is absolutely no question about quality. so for peace of mind you might as well go with one.
how much you want for the mpT70???

Rofl, Yeah I kinda have borg warner in my mind now and am mentally prepared for the financial drain of getting it. Of course selling my t70 will help ease the pain a bit I'm thinking of selling it in the 450-500 range. I bought it for 600 and had the ceramic coating done for 125 and it's only got a few dyno passes on it so I think that would be a fair deal.

it might B Hard to sell for 500 cause like u said new is 599....
I agree with a-spec
^ They actually hooked me up with a good price on a replacement
I had the MPt70 and it lasted about 8 months...
4 of those months were at 14psi...the other 4 were at 7Psi...
Look them up, Youll see everywhere that there hit or miss.
IMO if there's anything to Spend money on, It's the turbo... This car is nothing with out it.
Its like buying cheap condoms...Sure they work, But the second one Breaks on you your Fucked...LOL

would buy the BW unit first they are solid turbo's. Do it once, not twice

well yeah turbo is 600 but housing coating was 125 and to tell the truth this came with a .68 hotside so I had to spring for a .96 but I'm not counting that as most now automatically come with the .96... I think. But I don't mind selling it for 450 either which is a good deal considering it's only been used a couple limes. So how did your turbo go?

^ like i said Hit or miss....
When i got the FD it was my first Turbo car so i had the boost lowered to 7psi...7PSI!!!!
My cousin jokes saying "it gave up because it wasnt being used" LOL
But i Just went out for a cruise and gave somebody a ride.. I did a couple of 2nd to 3rd pulls... And then noticed a crazy loss of power...
I let it cool down and hoped that it was just me... but as i drove home i looked at the commander (PowerFC) and noticed i had no boost...
I didnt beat on it or anything... I thought about getting another mpt-70 just so i could bolt it right up and not worry about tuning and fitting... But i did crazy research on the Mp turbos... And the general statement was "they work and make good power, but for how long..." so instead of me taking another chance for $600 i figure i stick with something that has been reliable across the board

Who knows man, I'm still torn between the two. I could always just get another mpt70 if it did go. grrrr it's always a tough choice spending a butt load of money right around Christmas time on a car that doesn't play a vital role in getting you to and from work not to mention being right in the middle of a recession.
