Tyre Manufucaturer's recommended wheel widths
#26
Currently have 225/45 all around with no rubbing whatsoever on 7.5" wheels, however to go a wider wheel at the front introduces clearance issues at the strut, which means less offset which means a narrower tyre to clear the guard. Did invest in an ebay guard roller just in case.
That also fixes some suspension/offset issues and introduces a couple more as well. Hey, its a strut- you get to pick and choose your problems (not your solutions).

Finally got the wheels. 8"s with 195 and 9" with 225 Kumho v720. Perfect fit. Just needed to tether the handbrake cables in a bit. Drives, handles and grips soooo much better than the 7.5" and RS3 225's. To the point i thought something was wrong with the car before. Steering was super heavy and sloppy. Now its light and tight. Grip was mediocre and handling was *****. Trying to catch a slide was never elegant. All good now. Very happy boy!
