Damaged rotor housings in shipping. Would you reuse them?
Just received 2 housings on eBay. Filed a claim on eBay because packaging was complete **** and they were damaged (dented) in shipping. However, do you think these housings are reusable? They are dented on the edges of the housings.

you can actually see a lot of those small nicks in the pictures of the sold listing.. so it was just another careless seller. hopefully you got a chunk knocked off the asking price.
Oem Mazda rx-7 Rotor Housings rx7 13b engine rotary 93-95 turbo Fd3s 13b-REW | eBay
they could be used if none of the dings have a burr sticking in where the apex seal would grab it. so run a straight edge over the whole surface and see if it catches anything.

Should I insist on a full refund? That's my question. I wonder if I can use them in my engine. Bought some great apex seals and great everything, I don't really want to cut corners here.
Thanks for your advices!

But if I bought 2 housings, that is because I wanted 2 housings. If there won't be any issue buffing the dents then I'll do it. Sure thing I want a refund, but if you guys tell me it is reusable, I can arrange a partial refund with him, instead of a full one.

for combustion surfaces get a thick straight edge and lay it over the chrome surface where the ding is and tap the straight edge with a hammer(narrow edge over the burr, perhaps something to protect the straight edge or use something sacrificial for this) until the burr goes away. if it protrudes into the coolant seal side after that then you can easily knock it off with a block sander. something like a stainless steel ruler usually would suffice.
the other method to fix them is with rotor housing resurfacing. i wouldn't recommend using a dremel.
dont know why you keep saying they were damaged in shipping, they clearly weren't. the seller just has never admitted to selling them like you actually pictured them. ie, stop protecting the seller beyond the obvious shotty packaging job they did on top of it all. how they managed to keep a 100% score is beyond me. i see why, because they only have 1 feedback score as a seller! amazes me how poorly some people treat these parts, considering they are not cheap.

Maybe you are right, that they were already damaged. However, the poor packing didn't help for sure. The picture showed how it was when I opened the box. I was expecting some damage when I saw the studs outside of the box so that's why I took as many pictures as I could. Oh well...

wow cant believe they shipped them out to you like that its easy to see and say its the seller fault for not packing them right but the marks/nicks/dents etc they have on them look like they were there already i dont think the damage they have were made by the shipping they would of had a bigeer damage then what they have, but they do look usable still

A few random thoughts:
Buying engine parts on ebay isn't too smart, and this is evidence of that.
You get what you pay for, for $175 per rotor housing you're basically getting someone else's junk.
I'd be pretty pissed paying over $100 for shipping and they arrive like that.
I would not use those in an FD build at all, but that's just me. If you want a shitty engine, make sure to use shitty parts

I agree on the shipping. That's inexcusable. How hard is it to toss in some padding of some kind and tape the box up properly?
Also, let's not forget the guy described them as in "OK condition". He nailed it. They're not pretty, but we've all seen uglier. He did overlook those burrs in his pics though.
Rotary Evolution definitely knows what he's talking about. If he says they're usable, I'd clean them up, try the straight edge trick and bolt 'em together.

When I'm sending stuff that is valuable and can be damaged, double-boxing is what I do. Parts inside the inner box with padding, and then padding between the 2 boxes.
A shipper has to try pretty hard to screw that up.

by your judgement Rich, can i come and pick up all your scrap parts? i'll build some engines for personal projects with them.
though i'm certainly not defending this ebay seller, he should have shown the damage in the pictures. being that these parts are not something you can just clean up and toss into an engine without some additional repairs involved.
OP, i didn't say a straight edge was the only tool necessary. a sacrificial metal ruler can also be used, or a metal bar about 6mm wide or so that is flat faced. you won't damage the chrome, just trying to tap lightly the ding below the wear surface. the tiny imperfections left won't affect the compression by any discernable amount and those housings look to be pretty decent still. however some of the FD builders are a bit **** about some things.

I wouldn't use those housings. This is one of the areas you do not want to skimp on. Not only do they look like they were damaged in shipping, they also look like they were mishandled and the one appears to have a gouge from a previous failure. I would return them.

2nd and 1st gen guys will re use almost anything.
3rd gen guys buy all new everything.
C'est la vie.
For what it's worth. I've seen much worse housing re-used.

Back in the day, 1st-gens never blew up - they just wore out to the point that there was so little compression they wouldn't start. But if you got it started, it still ran great. That usually was well beyond 150K miles.

that's pretty surprising, unless the lazy turd didn't even bother to fight the claim. not like he should have, because he had to have known about the damage and tried to be ignorant about it.
