FC3S: Panspeed Style Drop Vented Hood
#77
My conclusion.
Since replica parts are subject to higher critique than JDM parts, I probably would not replicate off the original Panspeed hood. I would prefer to have it built from a good condition OEM hood and integrating the Panspeed vents. This would help ensure good fitment.
Perhaps some of you might recall our Sexy Style hood project for the FC. The original Sexy Style hood was horrible. Probably twice as bad as this. The project should be documented somewhere on the forum if anyone wishes to look through it. Tons of pics. We spent many hours trying to fix/improve the Sexy Style with little success. We experiemented with doing it off and OEM hood and that proved to be much more successful. That was a huge learning experience for us. FEED hood for the FD has its problems as well, but fits decent. What we should've done is base it of an oem hood for better fitment. I've already discontinued the FEED replica hood and planning to replace it with a new version based off an oem hood. We're on a different level with the bad experiences we've had. I would approach the Panspeed Hood project no other way.
There is another option. We could replicated the vents and sell them much more affordably and leave it up to you guys to custom fab it on your own hood of choice. This is an option, but in the end will not be saving you more as the labor cost to integrate will drive the cost of your project up. The only benefit I see is that it leaves the customer a choice of where and how they want the vents to be placed. I personally think the GK hood "looks" better as the lip around the vent is small and more discrete and subtle. That's my personal style/preference. If I was to build a "panspeed" hood from scratch, I would "want" to build it like that, but general customer preferance comes first. Unless I think its really ugly... then I will change
.
You can argue that Panspeed's lip is higher because it is more functional. But take a look at their hoods for the FD and you will notice the lip around the vent is not as aggressive as the one on the FC. Just a thought
.
Since we have to approach this project a different way, this will drive up the cost of the project initially. We basically have to build a plug. We have to source a hood, cut it up, make a mold of the Panspeed vents, produce the panspeed vents, integrate the produced panspeed vents, and clean it all up reall nice before we can even make a mold. Time frame for project will have to be extended.
Instead of $400 for the first 15, it will probably be $450. But you can rest assured our product will be better than Panspeed's product offered for $1100.

i am down for the CF vented hood, panspeed specs. i like the re-amemiya aero bonnet the most, the louvers are like a fighter plane/really unique for N/A cars...but this will do nicely with my panspeed fenders. i can pick it up from you too, ken. definately a must have. this hood could become the new standard in the community just because of its worthiness...

actually i would like to revise my statement by saying that the amemiya bonnet gives an older time specific rotary look which is why i like it for NA. it reminds me of the first gens and backward, something i would pair with watanabes. its hard to pin a backdated look on the FC and make it look so clean! koutos
the panspeed is the better ticket for turbo it would seem. it will definately update the car to make for a more timeless look. its contours on the vent are beautiful. i mean its no wonder why amemiya eventually went to tamon design hood after their aero bonnet, they were trying to make that FC look newer, and it naturally evolved to the more updated looking vents.
since i am getting the same wheels (white tho) and have the same fenders as the panspeed fc, i think my fc would look much newer with this style hood.
please DONT change the location of the vents on this hood! or their risers! this hood is gorgous and i feel panspeeds design is genius. the only thing we need is a rain gaurd. anything else may spoil a good thing (art).
i personally cannot find a nice replica hood for the FC that i can say will match my car's style. i am sure many other FC owners feel simularly, and for me its really this or no vents at all. if the hood is on the market, theres little choice to be made between vents and no vents, lol, i love my rotary too much and want its temps down.

what is the GK hood?
The back of the hood could be lowered down by adjusting the mounting points, I feel if you were to lower the mounting holes 1/4" or so you could get it alot closer, then some light sanding should even the rest out.
Playing with the hinge mounting locations also gives you side to side adjustments, I shimmed my hood to one side using a piece of fiberglass as a shim, sort of how they use metal shims on fenders but I made it out of piece of fiberglass, what that does is force one side over, so one side pushes a little and the other pulls in.
This also depends on your headlight alighment, headlights can be moved as well but then you risk your bumper not lining up

I have a handle on a atihun hood.
Im not talking about adjusting the snubbers for the front.
What I proposed above was to adjust the rear of the hood, I think the front can be cured by grinding the backside of the hood a little bit, laying fresh glass on the backside, closing the hood and putting weight on the one side to where it stays flush. When the glass cures it should hold its shape.
At that point a piece of halfround can be glassed to the backside to insure it stays at that shape because fiberglass has a "memory" and once that area is heated back up, such as when its in the mold, it may want to go back to its old shape.
When the inside mold needs to be made the halfround can be removed.

i mentioned the rain vents because its offered with other hoods at compairable pricing...
from what i can tell the atihun is nasty, like racing beat or something else with bad 90's styling. i may have the wrong hood, but im looking at a reverse vent 'U' lol.
i will add myself to the list...assuming the fitament will be finalized and adjusted from the pics. i want to go CF, i just needo and figure out which weave i used to like, lol. i dont want the vents moved around or altered, theyre perfect. its for pick up. seeing fitament on a car would be preferable before taking delivery.

If the latch was removed, there's a good chance it would lay down nicely. However, from what I see, the thickness of the hood and the variance in thickness is too much of a headache to resolve. Basing it off and oem hood or basing it off our sexy style hood as proposed would be much easier.
Some areas are high, some areas are low, some areas are flush. Adjusting the mounting points will only be another X factor. Plus, the hood is still too thick.

if you cut the vents off that hood and glassed them to one of your OEM hoods you would end up with a nice unit, probably less work but it would obviously sacrifice the hood.
Unless you splashed a mold off the vents, then the original hood would stay intact and could be sold off to offset the cost of the production, but doing that would be more work, and time is money especially if you pay a outside shop to do the glasswork versus having inhouse glass shop.
I still think when looking at that last pic if you removed the hood from the car, laid it upside down and put weight in the middle of the hood and glassed a gusset in you would be set.
I do this everyday and thats a way I see resolving that issue.
