Well, a normal cat is made simply to clean the exhaust. It's good for the environment. Not necessarily good for air flow, especially with our RX-7 3 cat stock exhausts.
A free flow cat is similar, except that it is made specifically for performance, so it still cleans the exhaust, but it can push the exhaust through much more quickly, giving a performance boost. By the way, Bonez makes just about the only high flow cat that can hold up to a rotary's heat, anything else will burn up in no time.
And, of course, a midpipe is just a straight pipe. It will likely give you the best performance, but your car is going to STINK with the unfiltered exhaust, not to mention that it's going to get much louder without a cat to make it quieter. Also if you have to get emmissions inspection, you will not pass with a midpipe, but you can pass with a high flow cat.
Personally, I have a straight pipe on my GSL-SE. I'd prefer a high-flow cat, but they cost too much, midpipes are cheap. I swap in the stock cats when it's time for inspection.
