Nice trans am. It does have a rotary under the hood, right?

You could do a nice morph series from your FD to the TA, it'd look like the RX7 got muscles. The next drive-in will be on January 8, looking forward to seeing everyone again.

dee prefers street tuning. he doesnt even take his race car to the dyno. i have a dyno for us to use if we need to. so who is interested?

Taylor, I am actually thinking of picking up a datalogit from a dude on the cheap (well relatively cheap anyways). Do you think it is something worth owning or would it basically just collect dust after I had my car tuned?

not to show my complete ignorance but how many times do you have to run through the gears for a street tune?

Tuning on the street is actually more accurate than tuning on a dyno, this is because the dyno rollers do not represent the actual load the car is under during acceleration on the street. The differences being mainly, the weight of the car and wind resistance. This is not as big of a problem for Rx7's, due to the fact that our cars are so light.(I beleive the standard dyno roller is about 3k pounds) This makes the weight pretty close to an Rx7 with driver. But heavier cars like the supra's are not under accurate load conditions as if they were on the street. Also it is more safe (from an engine standpoint) because you have a good amount of air blowing over the radiator, intercooler, and oil cooler. The number or runs you will have to make will depend on how knowledgable the person doing the tuning is and what you are using to tune. You could get it knocked out much quicker with data logging software than with the commander. To get my car tuned with the PFC and commander took about 20 dyno pulls.

Heh, I got that Initial D model too. I make the car run over the little people that come with it.

Yeah, I knew it, you couldn't get totally away from the rotary way of life. Bring it to the drive-in and let us marvel at a 26B, I don't think anyone has ever seen a 26B engine.

I went over to Performance Freaks yesterday and registered. You're right about the rotarians that visit there. Maybe we can keep in touch with them thru the PF site and get them to start using the RX7 site. Thanks for that heads up.

Brent my FD probably won't be back together til february.

I was polishing everything, but have decided to go a different route. I am going to have black chrome & candy blue the parts; a little more original, since everyone does polished. This should cut down on time since I was doing all the polishing labor myself (now i know why polished costs so much money ) Hope it turns out as well as i have it pictured in my mind. I am getting the powdercoating equipment sometime this week, painting and baking it up this weekend then finally slapping everything back together. Then I just have to wait to save up the money for my FMIC & wideband o2 (should have those taken care of by end of January)

Josh- that sounds nice ! Can't wait to see it .

Bert - My 26b is often confused with an ls1, I dont know why. Your right though, there is a lot of rx7s on performancefreaks, but they all live west of here...

I'm definately in for the tuning. Gotta get the clutch and flywheel put in first though. Does Dee require any prep for the tuning? Like new spark plugs, fresh injectors, recent oil changes? I know Steve Kan had some deal like that so I just figured I'd ask.

Josh, you know I gotta ask... would you be willing to powdercoat for others as well? with a fee of course. There were a few guys on HPJ doing this and making some good side money so maybe you could look into it. Just a thought.

taylor, if any of the regular guys from the drive-ins want i can powder coat for whatever the price of the powder is. generally, it isnt too expensive about $13-26 for a pound which can cover a whole lot of parts. i have never done it so let me make sure i have the skillz, before i go making any offers. oh, and if it doesn't fit in a home oven i can't do it.

thanks josh, how hard is it to powdercoat like the UIM without it getting the runners or onto the electrical connections?

Well I have mine all apart with no; sensors, connectors, hoses, etc. That is what I would recommend if we decided to do yours. The UIM only has a handful of sensors connected to it, so it isn't too troublesome. Basically, after everything is removed the holes need to be covered up, so it doesn't get onto the threads. I have caps and plugs for the smaller holes (i.e. electrical connectors and the sort), but will probably have to come up with some kind of plug (paper towels or something) for the runners. i'll let you know more once i have actually laid some powder and seen the results myself. I am sure I will have to do the first piece more than once before it is right.

Anyone up for a Sunday drive down to Clinton in late March or early April to meet our eastern rotarian brothers from Wilmington, Jacksonville? It'd be a good drive and some good excercise for all our cars after being cooped up all winter.

when is their meet?

I am headed to Deal's Gap on th 8-10th and hope that some of you guys will make it out there, too. Should be a nice event with plenty of local(relatively) rotaries, a great drive, and plenty of cool air for those of us with turbos. We have to represent the RRDI at the Tail of the Dragon, we are the biggest/most organized group in NC, after all.

Jonanthan, thanks for the info on tuning. I guess a few 100+ mph runs for the sake of tuning are acceptable. I wonder if the cop would accept that as an excuse. "Sorry, officer I am just tuning my car."

If the east guys are interested then we'll schedule it around VIR events and the Deals Gap Drifting Competition. I'll see what the east guys say about the idea and then we'll plan something so that most of y'all can make the short trip to Clinton.

Anyone been to Clinton or know anything about the area? Can you suggest a good place to meet and hang out?

Ha! Remember the guy with the black VR-4 who shows up at the driveins sometimes? Well I helped him do a turbo swap (two WRX turbos) and after that we were tuning one night at about 1 AM on Creedmoor. The road was practically deserted but there were still a couple cars here and there. Somebody must have alerted a cop or something because a cop car did a U turn and started following us.

We pulled off Creedmoor and headed back to my friend's house and the cop followed us all through his neighborhood. Finally we parked in the driveway. The cop turned around at the end of cul-de-sac and we thought he was gone, so I got in my car and started leaving. Around the corner, just out of sight from my friends house, the cop waited in ambush. I passed right by him and it turns out he waited there for thirty minutes.

Ray, that is out of hand. Glad you guys didn't get busted or anything.

I know there are a couple of spots in Raleigh that are good straight roads with very little police action late at night. The thing is I am sure the tuner would want to do the runs during the day. Maybe we could set it up street racer style. have someone driving a couple of miles ahead checking for cops with a two way or cell to give the all clear.

That is my concern with street tuning, it becomes a lot bigger deal than dyno tuning (at least for those of us who don't like tickets). I understand the benefits of street tuning if you are trying to squeeze every last HP out of the car, but for me a 99% will do. Anyhow, maybe we can get it all sorted out if we decide to have Dee come down.

Josh: Have you been watching Fast and furious again?

We definatly need to talk, I pretty much have the same idea about under the hood. Everything under the hood will be Painted, Polished, or ported. I got a die grinder and a polishing kit and so far have ported my water pump housing took off all the cast marks, polished up some, and made a hell of a mess in the basement. So I'm definately interested in some powder coating.

My engine is ready I need to go to Tenn. to pick it up, My car is at the painters, complete paint job engine bay gutted. I need to be paitent and not get into a rush ( I usually rush to get it running and wind up taking some short cuts) So I dont have a completion date.

I will respectfully abstain from the drift competion, It wouldn't be fair to the others!

Johny

Johny, I haven't watched it lately, but we can obviously see that it infected my mind at one time and I am still not cured. "We've got a 187 down on Creedmoor Rd. we're good to go!"

I started doing the same this with polishing. The porting of the manifolds wasn't hard but that damn polishing takes a lot of work. I guess if were using a bigger tool i would get faster results (hehe, that's what she said...sorry, couldn't help it) , but I have decided to cheat and just powder coat, not to mention I am hoping for a more original look.

Glad to hear your project is coming along, though. I have had to be extra patient not to just slap it all back together. I am taking my times and giving everything the once over and some things the twice over; I see you are doing the same thing.

I can't wait to see that beast, again. Do you have even a ballpark figure of when it will get done; '05, '06?

I gotta get mine on the road soon, those underage girls on Crapital are gonna start missing me soon.
