Hey all, I picked up the white S5 poor_red_neck posted about as a body donor for my slightly warped T2. Anyone need any S5 stock parts, as in a whole drivetrain?

I'm going to rebuild the motor to regain some of the purchase cost, but I should have a set or two of S5 tails to pass on and some stock S5 interor stuff, and wheels etc.

JMunilla - sure you don't want your motor rebuilt locally? If you don't trust Ashraf or I with it then Bruce Turrentine is in eastern Raleigh and he does a better job of building than Mazda does in the first place. He builds them for airplanes - quality is a big issue. Actually, I get quite a few parts from him

Not sure if Ashraf is planning on going to the GRR or not, but if he does I may roll out that way. I'd like to meet people but school is getting ver' busy with projects and such.

Update for any of you that were interested... the Charlotte meet I am setting up is going to be on the 5th of November, not the 6th. We are meeting at 7pm at the Taco Bell on Highway 51, in Pineville, by the Carolina Place Mall. We would love to have any of you come. I talked to a guy just the other day that said he had talked to Bruce and he said he wasn't doing them any more for the locals. He might have been saying that just because he didn't want any more business right then, but that is what i was told.

one of the problems he (Bruce) has had with automotive users is what I could call forum-kiddie-itis, where people don't know what they want and want to lowball him for everything they can get. Also, I *know* he doesn't do removals and installs - you ship him a core, he'll ship you a rebuilt motor back. look up his webpage in google and email him - he's usually very straightforward to work with if you're upfront about what you want out of the motor and how much you are willing to pay.

Mike, I have decide to try my hand at rebuilding it. My father taught me, anything a man can do another man can do, too. I hope to get it right the first time, but if I don't I will just chalk it up to a learning experience and try again. It doesn't look like I will be letting go of the FD anytime soon and hope to pick up a TII somewhere along the way, so I might as well learn now. The only thing I may outsource is the streetporting; by outsourcing I mean, get the templates and get Steve to help me with it (hopefully, he will give me "friends of rotary" discount and not kill me on the $$$). If he messes up my housing I will just confiscate an RX7 from him

Of course this is assuming that after me and the old man caliper, measure, dial, scrutinize, the motor internals they are within specs. If not then the prices on some of remans become more reasonable, though I would probably try to source the parts and still do it myself.

I figure if I can do it myself and keep the cost around $2K I will be happy(the way it breaks down in my newbie mind is ~$1000-1100 for the rebuild kit and another ~$1000 for miscellanous stuff that I am not taking into account right now. Maybe I am being unrealistic, but hey that's what being crazy is all about and anyone who owns a rotary is a little crazy.

$2K is a good figure to start with. Make sure you put in the teflon inner water Orings and some decent apex seals - I like the rotary aviation ones but some folks have had problems with them. Same with the Hurley engineering.

Good luck on the rebuild - get the manual, and a clean space to lay everything out. 99% of the work is making the inside clean enough to eat off of, otherwise all your Orings will leak coolant and oil

porting is an art, and many artists charge exorbitantly for it. Rob Golden at Pineapple wanted $300 *per housing* to street port mine. No thanks - I guess my ports won't be quite that awesome.

i saw a white FC parked in the dan allen parking deck last night at state. don't worry guys, i was sure to leave a "the rx-7 club knows about you!" note on the car. was it anyone on here?

I hear that. for that kind of money i might even have to live with stock ports. I think Rotorsports charges around $350 for a streetport I think I can live with that. I would imagine if they screw up they would replace the housing.

Thanks for the advice, I am trying to gather as much info as I can. I have the shop manual and I ordered Turrentine's video. I plan on watching that before I make my decision to crack open the housings.

Hrm... seems my GSL-SE doesn't have a fourth gear anymore. While not totally necessary, it gets a tad annoying. Anyone here any good at rebuilding a transmission?

Glad to hear the white S5 worked out for you mike, and a pleasure meeting you.

I was SOOOO close to making it to the meet, but 2 stripped, then broke bolts in my thermostat housing prevented me from having transportation... so looks like its taxi rides for the next few days until I can get an "EZ out" kit and get this puppy fixed.

Check out http://members.tripod.com/~grannys/rx7balancing.html . As you can see, the S5s all weigh significantly more than that S4s. In fact, an S5 Turbo II is heavier than an FD.

Initial planning for 25 people

Costs: $10 plus a car related prize useable for FB, FC, FD, or 8 owners to be used for the door prizes, you can buy one or get one donated if you have connections.

Also need a firm commitment form those who plan on attending.

Well, I own 3 that should run, and 4 that shouldn't, but none do, and none are likely to anytime soon unless someone ***** a good turbo drivetrain at me, for free

We'll see. That's about a $40 trip in the Jeep so I'm not entirely sure I can afford to - I have a reserve weekend right before that and that is $ in gas College student budgets suck.

It's sad that my last RX-7 got better gas mileage than my current ride.

So basically, if I bum a ride with Ashraf I may come.

Or, I could borrow the girlfriend's Saturn and show you all up on the rally - last road rally I did I beat a Factory Five Cobra in that car

You have owned and worked on more RX-7's than most people can even dream of. It doesn't matter if you actually have one running to come to an RX-7 meeting. It hasn't stopped you before and it shouldn't stop you now.

Now you've gone and ruined any chance of having a good reputation with these guys by associating with me.

So you want me to drop you off? I'm not so sure I'm welcome - it's back woods over there, they have large tracts of land that I could "conveniently" dissapear in. Just don't mention all the things you notice that are wrong with their FB/FC's (especially blackened brake fluid) and you should be okay.

Don't pay any attention to Ashraf, we'll need him at the rally for the brake fluid judging event anyway. He claims to have an FD in his garage, under all the car parts. Everyone is welcome at the Grand Rotary Rally of NC. If y'all want to come we can find a way of getting you there. We have guys that show up at the Drive-ins in Civics, Mustangs (Cobras and Salleens), Supras, Firebirds, Mitsu Eclipses and VR4s, Camrys, and there was even someone that came in their wife's Acura TLS.

Funny story about brake fluid... the first time I did an autocross in my first gen the tech inspector originally failed me since the brake fluid was so clean, he couldn't tell there was any in the reservoir...

Ah! I *do* have an RX-7 that runs, albeit it isn't rotary and in fact isnt' internal combustion at all. Just need to make sure I have some fresh AA's and I'm all set
