I just blew up my engine and plan on doing the rebuild myself and porting. I am going to get some porting templates from racing beat and use a die grinder. A friend of mine who has done quite a few rebuilds is going to guide me through the process. So, if you want I can let you use my templates.
Also, I'm pretty sure they have the reman situation back to normal. I may be wrong, call up Ray Crowe out of Malloy Mazda. My friend and I just put a reman in his car last month.
Garrett
I have the MB RX7 from Greensboro with the CF hood, I'll be gone from the meets until after December and hopefully with a street port if all goes well.

Steve, I had given that some thought, I wanna hear what they have to say as far as $$$ goes.
Taylor, I guess I was probably thinking more of getting a built motor from a shop, like rotorsports(ported, worked over, etc) than straight a straight mazda reman(even though that is the term I used in my posts). I was under the same impression as you about the backlog. It seems as though they may not be, according to Garrett, so I am gonna give Malloy's a call and see what the deal is.
Garrett, if I decide to do it myself I will probably take you up on the templates. Thanks for offering and good luck on your engine build. Look forward to seeing you once it is all back together.
Bert, how dare you take a vacation?! I mean, really, the audacity of some people.
Just for the record my motor died at 91,682 miles.

Yeah, I decided that it would be good to get away from the job for a few days, and it sure was. Now I'm good to go for at least 3 or 4 days. Sorry to hear the bad news about your engine. Just think of a blown engine as not the end but the beginning of a bright new future. According to what Rick has said at the meetings that mileage you reported is about what to expect from a FD engine. The earlier problem with the coolant and radiator may have contributed to the failure of the coolant seals tho. It looks like there is a lot of interest in the idea of a Grand Rotary Rally, are you gonna be available for it on 11/13? We'll start off with a $10 up front ticket purchase and then work on the details of the shirts and provide the shirts at what ever the cost difference is. We'll see how it goes.

I may not be there in a rotary, but I will definitely make it out.
I think the radiator problem may be a chicken or the egg type deal. I had a mysterious coolant leak that I hadnt been able to track down. For about a month before everything happened I would have to add just a bit of coolant to the engine every couple of weeks. They may have been on their way out already and the overheat just pushed them over the edge or their failure may have caused the overheat.
I agree that this is just another marker in the ownership of a rotary. I knew enough to expect this when I bought it, but you always hope for it to be later than sooner. I am working out some details with Rotorsports. I may get one of their built engines. They have a good solid reputation and are close enough to be considered local. I am thinking a good streetport and a set of rebuilt turbos should get me on the way to 350-400RWHP. The 7 might disappear for a while, but when it comes back it will be better than ever. I may just leave it in the garage 'til I get ALL the mods I want done and then bring out next spring.

Josh,
At least your car went out with a wimper rather than a bang. You remember how Rick rebuilt his car himself (except for porting/seals/machine work)? Well his was burning a quart of oil a week, until one day Jeremy took the car to school and the whole thing just blew up while he was pulling out of the parking lot. The apex seal shot through the rotor housing and killed the secondary turbo. He got around 100k miles out of it. I know he's probably mentioned it to you before but you should definately talk to him again about the whole process--he spent 7 months, but it's a clean as hell rebuild.

Ray, yea I am glad it is only a coolant seal. The car was getting good compression when I bought it and still runs strong once you get it cranked. This gives me hope if I decide to do the rebuild myself. I don't know if I have 7 months worth of patience like Rick, that is the biggest reason I am considering just buying a built engine. I definitely plan on talking to Rick this weekend, and glean some info from him.

Looking forward to this weekend's drive-in too. It would be nice to see Josh and Dave again as well as everyone else. Need to talk about the first GRR arrangements to make sure we're all together on what will happen, and when. Also need to make the major decision on food, time, date, location, cost, etc. Then get a posting out on this forum to let everyone know what to expect and nail down driving directions and what we'll be trying to do during the GRR.
All ideas will be welcomed as well as volunteers to help get it all organized and put together. We'll learn alot this first time and we'll make mistakes but it will only mean that the next one will be a better one. Come prepared to contribute and get involved.

We'll get all the decisions made this weekend and I'll post the thread on this SE RX7 forum Sunday. I'll also send a PM to the guys that you've been talking to from that area to see if we can't get them interested.

I'll try and make it out.
I'm driving on a "getting worse by the day" ECU. Its like Its just BARELY trying to keep the motor running. I can't press the throttle more than oh say 15 percent... so interstate driving equals a no no. The beltline wont be fun. Add that, in addition to the whopping 6 mpg I'm getting right now (after replacing TPS, O2 sensor, plugs, etc) but dammit, I'll try
I think going to the last meet, from hillsborough street to strickland, and back, I burned over 1/4 almost 1/3 of a tank of gas. Hopefully, if there are more rotaries there, it'll be worth it
Hope to see you guys there,
Jon
P.S. I left before the guy with the crown vic came in... I heard somebody say it was modded... what's it got done to it? Just curious.

jmunilla if you want to go the cheap route. you can get a reman from ray crowe at malloy for 2000. he should have them in stock. when i ordered mine back in august, he got it to me in a couple days. Then you could just slap it in and be on the road in a couple weeks. That is the cheapest and quickest way to get a motor. all depending on how much you want to spend, and how soon you want to get your car running.

Someone will be glad to get you to the drive-in and home again. Let us know if we can help with the car or with the ride.

We'll work on the shirt designs and decide on the design or atleast a concept for the design and see what we'll need for the event. I really don't think we can get the shirts ready for the GRR but could have them at one of the following meetings in December or January to pass out. I'll let you after the drive-in what needs to be done and give you some options. Thanks for volunteering, I like the idea of a "GRAND ROTARY RALLY of NC" banner and maybe a few smaller signs to post at some critical intersections to insure no one gets lost on the way to the rally. We'll decide on the rally site Saturday and I'll let you know what we need early next week.

Taylor, I saw you driving up western yesterday around 5:30-5:45. Damn, I forgot how good a modded FD looks riding down the road.
JaySeven, how much was shipping on the motor if you remember? Does he require a core(I know the answer is prob. yes) and if so how much of a core charge is he charging? Thanks.
I am out of town this week, but look forward to coming to the meet this Saturday.
