Yes, we hoped you weren't serious, I thought you knew better. Its like supply and demand. But you're right if you own an FD you need a private money tree, but it would have to be an evergreen variety to insure a year-round supply. Without problems to overcome, personal prejudices and preferences to deal with, and hurricanes life would be pretty boring. As a famous philosopher once said "if we didn't have problems nothing would be easy."

Pretty profound for a philosopher.

Anybody in raleigh have a spare split air pipe they'd sell me?

Hey guys just thought I would let the local folks know first, I am selling my 84 GSL-SE for $800 OBO. It runs strong and is rust free, needs a new front bumper cover and a paint job. I would love to keep it but do not have the time and place to work on it right now and I am trying to buy a house so it needs to go. I will probaly get another RX in the future though it might be an FC. Anyone interested call me at 471-0769.

Wow, that sounds like what I've been looking for... dunno if I can scrape up $800 though, I'll see what I can do. I'll try to remember to call you tomorrow (seeing as how it's almost 11 at night now)

I would LOVE to have a first gen project car, but it needs to be able to run at least, as city ordinances and my landlord do not allow me to have a car that doesn't run and doesn't have tags at my house...

The car runs, he has brought it to a Drive-In. As THQ said it is a diamond in the rough and needs some work and TLC to bring it up to showroom condition.

Very sorry to hear about your problems. You're right about the FCs, I think all rotary owners acknowledge the demands their cars make, both in time and parts, and are only too happy to provide both in whatever quanity it takes to keep that special relationship going.

The FD thing is just a running joke between those that don't have an FD and those that do. So far we've come up with Finicky Driver, Financial Drainer, Financially Deprived, Finally Driven, etc., for FDs and their owners. They don't take any of this personally 'cause they understand how envious we are of their cars and the amount of time they get to spend under the hood.

Hey Tom, I tried calling you, but I guess you were at work or something. I keep a weird work schedule so it might be difficult to play phone tag. Can you PM me some more details about the car?

What I have learned after having gone through a '91 Civic, '85 RX-7, my two current cars and prior/present vehicles owned by my parents is that ANY car, even a "gold-standard" commuter appliance like a Toyota or Honda, when properly maintained, seems to be a financial drain. If you take decent care of any car, it won't be unreliable, but you lessen the "extra" maintenance you might incur if you didn't take care of it and try to squeak out some extra miles out of the maintenance.

Some things are normal wear items:
Oil
Belts
Water pumps
Timing belts
Wheel bearings
Shocks
Tires

...you name it...stuff breaks...life happens...it's how you deal with it. Heck, even new cars break (yes, you have a warranty, but at a significant expense).

You can either be proactive and replace stuff ahead of time and have a reliable car or be surprised and be without a car/have a large bill from the mechanic (which can be hard to pay when you don't have a car to get you to work).

I used to think those "maintenance schedules" that they give you at the dealer were a pile of you know what, but the longer I deal with all of my car maintenance myself, I'm seeing that it's a lot easier to replace something that you know is going to die eventually than to deal with the repercussions of "pushing it" and having it die at an inopportune moment. It sure gives me a warm fuzzy feeling to know that all the maintenance is done and that I don't really have to worry about the car quitting on me when I need it most.

Here's something to think about with rotary vehicles:
Get a compression test on a regular basis to keep tabs on the engine health (Try to do it under similar circumstances, ala "Italian Tuneup" beforehand to equalize the amount of carbon deposits or other process to do so). If you see that your compression drops a significant amount between intervals (a year might be reasonable) then you might start saving NOW for that engine rebuild and do the engine rebuild before an apex seal shoots out and embeds itself into a rotor housing and makes the rebuild more expensive.

Regards,
--Ashraf

Steve, I've got dibs on the hood. It could be a little while before I get it though. Oh and I need the little plastic shell around the light inside the hatch, assuming it's not broken. Mine likes to come off if you don't close the hatch really softly.

everyone die? well I looked at that '91, and the question I came home asking myself is; "How much bondo can one rear quarter panel hold?" I am going to take a look at an '88 sometime this weekend. I would have liked to have S5, but not badly enough to deal with a huge bondo patch job and a crappy paint job. anyhow, just figured I'd keep the crew abreast of my search for a 2nd Gen.

Ashraf, I just read your above posting about having the compression checked on a regular basis. Having never done this, I'm curious how simple the process is and where /who could do it... And of course how much $$... This is probably a simple task for some of you guys, but something I've never done. My 90 vert is running great (knock on wood), but I'm curious as to the true "health" of my rotary. Any advise is appreciated.

I finally get to get that 93 FD that i have been looking at. It took the bank forever to clear my check so that i could write out a cashiers check to pay the dude for the car. So i am going to go pick up the car after i am done with classes tomorrow. Had ordered some reliability mods for it, i know the performance radiator came in so i will be putting that in this weekend. Should be lots of fun.
