Alcohol, the RRDI, drinking and driving.

The first year we ran into town got beer and everyone in the RRDI watched a movie in someone's cabin and had a blast. Nobody had a problem with that. Last year we brought our own, or went and bought it, and again nobody I know had a problem with it. I also remember a few threads in the DGRR section last year mentioning that now alcohol was legal at Fontana and would be sold in the lounge. I also remember seeing threads from quite a few people were looking forward to this.

As far as what happened to turn Johny off to us so to speak or the event last year I'm still in the dark. I'm not sure anyone really knows and I'm not going to pressure him about it but I don't think it had anything to do with us having a few drinks. As far as the Mansion and Phil, I think we've covered that.

As I said before, I doubt anyone in the RRDI would drink and drive in the first place at this event or allow any other member to do so. It also isn't a case of we're going to get plastered and cause a problem. Seems enough people raised hell last year around Fontana without us being there who were sober.

I can understand and appreciate both Bert's and Phil's concern for safety but I feel I can assure them both that it isn't or never was an issue for this event from any of us here. I'm sure from what I've read in various threads in the DGRR section we would not be the only ones who could, would or will be drinking and never once did the thought of anyone at this meet drinking and driving cross my mind.

To sum it up there isn't an issue about drinking and driving, and shouldn't be about some people being able to drink if they choose to do so after the days events have ended. I'm more concerned with stupid driving and cars not equipped to deal with the Dragon than someone trying to drive home with a hangover Sunday.

As far as the "drinking" issue... [/disscussion]

^Yah, seriously. No more talking about this drinking and driving crap. I have an enormous question mark over my head for how this could have even become anything more than a fleeting thought for anyone.

I understand what Johny saw in everyone last year at DGRR and what Phil Sohn got from a lot of you a few months ago. Johny wasn't the problem when he underwrote the costs of the Mansion and expected everyone that committed to stay there to share the expenses. The problem resurfaced again when Phil asked the RRDI to be a full DGRR participant; Phil wasn't the problem then, and the self centered, belligerent attitude surfaced again when I made my request to keep the vodka bottles closed.

I spoke out on an issue that I feel strongly about, drinking and driving. I served in Vietnam and lost two guys in my battalion during the year I was in country and during the 10 year course of that war; two friends I grew up with, went to school with and played high school football with were killed in Vietnam. That is 4 friends in 10 years lost to a very savage war. I have seen at least 17 people I knew personally killed in alcohol related traffic accidents in my life. That is 4 times more people killed due to alcohol use by them or by others. In the sixth grade one of my friends and his entire family were killed that summer on their way to a beach vacation by a drunk driver. I feel strongly about mixing alcohol and car events. A few beers are one thing but hard liquor is quite another matter and thinking the two together are cool is immature and very short sighted. Anybody remember the ravages that alcohol abuse and driving have had at Wakefield High?

I apologize to anyone that was personally offended with my request to keep the vodka bottles closed but I do not apologize for making the request. I have finally had enough of a few, self-centered adolescents venting whenever they are asked to do something that is in their best interests and for the good of the whole. I have lost all interest in the RRDI and whatever it is to become. I am no longer a member of the RRDI and will not be part of any of the group's events that I previously said I would participate in.

Freedom requires responsibility; when you exercise the former you must accept the latter.

Bert
Bert, I would personally PM you, but this is something others need to read as well...

From what David and I have gathered from Johny, last year had nothing to do with alcohol. It had to do with people who committed to staying in the mansion not doing so, and Johny got stiffed a large amount of money. I am sure Johny and his wife felt quite bitter when some of us were up late as a few of our members were kinda loud in the kitchen and downstairs at the pool table. Although having one big house for all of us to share together was cool, it was also hard for the members who wanted to be near us, but not HEAR us when they went to bed BEFORE midnight.

I also want to ask you as well to reconsider leaving the RRDI group. I am sorry that you feel this way about us. I do not completely understand why you feel the RRDI is so bad that you have to walk away. Nobody has been drinking and driving. What else has anyone done? The past issues with loud drunkards has come and gone, because a certain Air Force Soldier broke up with America's #1 alcoholic. The others that I am aware of who drink have never proven themselves to be an irresponsible drinker.

I too am very much against people driving after so much as ONE beer. I am the kind of person who is terrified of getting in trouble, or something bad happening and a friend needing me at a moment's notice. If a friend called me or someone was hurt, I would want to be 100% sober so I can rush their butt to the hospital! (for example, anyway). I guess that's just my family's Boy Scout influence on me to always "be prepared." I love each of my RRDI friends very dearly, and I would do anything for them if they needed a friend.

Bert, you will be missed if you do not change your mind. At least have enough mercy on us to explain your reasonings for stepping down from way above us and explain to us why... so we don't push anyone else away.

Joey, David and I are rolling up to DGRR on Wednesday around lunchtime with Chris and his friends. Let me know if you want to depart with us then, or just meet up with us Thursday. We don't have reservations for our room until Thursday night, so we are planning on staying in Chris's room for Wednesday night.

Who was the other person who was planning on staying in our room?? I could swear we had one other person interested. BC, it may have been you, but I do believe you were planning to camp now, right?

Anyone else at this point who needs a place to sleep is more than welcome to sleep in our room. We aren't planning on drinking/partying in our room, so it will definitely be a SLEEPING room.

Ok guys here goes. Since everyone has posted as to what I feel, let me clairify

My bitterness has/had nothing to with alcohol, As a matter of fact the most fun I had at the mansion was sitting on the front steps drinking/ chilling with everyone. I never really saw anyone who was drinking get behind the wheel.

As far as the noise, not really that big of a deal. We have rented a house at the beach for the past 10 years usually about 6 to 8 bedrooms so lots of people lots ot different bedtimes,
Everyone there is to have a good time but not at the expence of others. so the late night parting not a big deal.
I was a little offened when someone (don't remember who) was gonna make some kind of flaming drinks/ shots. I asked them not to not on my deposit.

Here is where my feelings were hurt. I took it on my own made RRDI stickers, made mazda stickers, made bamnners, made signs,

My and the wife went to the gro. store bought 130.00 worth of stuff to make the most exqusite lasagna and trimmings meal.
I got a few thank-you's but only a couple of people offered to pay. I DIDNT WANT money only wanted to be appriciated.

You all know how badly I got stiffed on the mansion I have gotten several PM over the past year. " Johny let me know what I owe you". How do I answer that one?
Well lets see. It cost me about $1300.00 If you want to share the burden how bout $650.00 then we'll both be stiffed. OK... redicoulus right?

I think the offer to stay free at the mansion was admirable, but what If I had accepted?
Id be sleeping in the car now because it never materlized.

This is the whole RRDI problem we don't have any structure everyone goes ther own way which is fine until there is a group outing. There needs to be a President, vice president and so forth things need to be voted on and do it as a group.

Like the mansion last year. could have called a meeting and requested everyone who stayed pay $25.00 to $50.00 dollars. but done as a Group not just a couple.

Bottom line is we need structure.

I liked hanging out with everyone and I really like looking at everyone's ride. I really dont/ didnt like driving the dragon like an idiot. I'm afraid some one will get hurt, or at the least a torn up ride.

I guess Im kinda a car show kinda guy while it seems most of you are drive it like you stole it people.

I'm not out of the RRDI and I hope to see yall soon and if you get up to VIR we will both "drive it like you stole it"

Bert please don't leave the RRDI you are the reason ther is a RRDI.

NOW; on a sadder note, and I know I'm dramatic, I am losing my wife of 10 years.
IT has been a battle for about 8 months. Im not losing her to cancer or sickness, but to some thing bigger than her

I have tried all I can, my brother told me "If I was on the Titanic with a paper cup, it would have not have sank"
I hope this gives you the Idea of how hard I tried.

I'm pretty sure she is moving to TENN. ( I'm convincing her to do so for her own good) Im not resentful and Im going help her make a new start.

I lost my life partner, best friend.

If not for my parents and my daughter I probably would have just call it quits all together, but my parents and my daughter need me. ( Dad if doing fair by the way)

A true test iof sadness if if you cry when you are alone, I do lots of it. Not ashamed to admit it. "My tears do not comprise my strength"
Ill get through it one day at the time.

See you guys soon
Johny

Christina was that you I saw in the SRT-4 a few weeks ago at school? Be Prepared is my motto!!!! I'm an Eagle Scout

Eric, Sorry man, I wanted to help out but I got back at 4:30 after 400 miles of driving and I texted you then crashed, way too tired.

Johny, Im sorry that you got stiffed on some $$$ and your having some hard times right now. Your exactly right that the whole RRDI lacks structure. There needs to be a President or an organizer for each meet. The reason I can't go as much as I'd like to is I'm either out of town racing myself or working for the Grand-AM team. And when I did go to the meets, expecting to be like "it used to be" with at lesat 10 cars, there was only 3-4 people there.

And the whole Deal's Gap thing scares me and I shake my head everytime I hear about people going way too fast there, getting new tires, new brakes, new suspension, new engine etc just for this event. This is a PUBLIC road that old granny's doo daa on. If you want to race go to a HPDE or a driving school at a track like VIR, with people who acutally know how to race. I'm sure Johny you know, once you've raced on a track, it takes the fun out of just "going fast" on the street.

yes. I waved at you and all your car's beauty as she came down the hill! *drool* It's always so nice to start my day with an FD's beauty gracing my sights. I want one so bad.

And for my returning question... was that you I saw in an old faded grey FB driving towards the State Fairgrounds (or probably towards your dad's shop) a week ago?? I was in the SRT-4 then, too.

I just edited my post, hI need to fix a leaky fuel injector before I start driving it much again. If you want my car, Id be more than happy to sell it

Was not me in the FB, I haven't driven one since I sold mine to Jesse. I'd like to get an FB project car though and do it all up with a turbo motor, but that will be later down the road.

Ok... Johny, your PMs aren't working because you haven't cleaned your box out since they changed the limit size... so here's my PM...

*Tears in eyes*

Wow. Johny, I am so so so so SO sorry to hear that!! If you need anything... anything at all, I am just one call away!!!

Seriously. I will come up there in a heartbeat if you need someone to keep you company... go to dinner... etc.

I appreciate you clarifying the problem. I loved the lasagna y'all made last year, I am positive that I said thank you (because my momma raised me right) and just to let you know, we were planning to cover your stay WHEREVER we stayed this year. If you still want to go, just to get out of the house, then let me know and I will make it happen!

I can't even begin to imagine the pain you are feeling in your heart right now. I have been walked on and hurt alot in my life, but nothing as serious as losing a best friend of 10 years.

I am here for you, hun... always.

Good I'm glad it wasn't you, cuz my original post called it an "old beat up gray FB" I was sure it was either you driving it to the shop to part it out, or it wasn't you at all. LOL

As for your editing of the other post, I am glad to know you are an Eagle Scout! That's awesome! My parents are both leaders and my brother is getting his Eagle sometime this summer. He turns 18 in August--- so everyone hide when he gets his license. lol The rents wouldn't let him get his license until he got his Eagle, which must be attained before a Scout turns 18.

Bert- I'm not sure what to say about your decision to leave, not like anyone really cares anyway. I guess it's kinda weird since you're the one that started the group, and I don't WANT you to leave, but what can I do to stop you? I'm not going to beg, this is your choice. Although I don't drink AT ALL (therefore I don't think you ever referred to me in this last argument), I do remember last year or at any event I can remember, that no one drove drunk that I could tell, so I don't know why this was all blown out of proportion. I understand you wanting everyone to be safe, and the reasons you feel that way (after reading about your friends), but I also think it was handled the wrong way. Oh well. I'm sure if you ever want to come back you will be welcomed with open arms, I know I'll welcome you that way (if I'm still around). Good luck with everything.

Phil (Sohn, not Rodriguez)- I apologize for attacking you a few months ago, I didn't realize someone had coaxed you here, only to be "thrust upon stakes". However, you have to understand although we don't have the structure some groups have, for the most part we are very tight knit, and whenever someone comes into our thread/group voicing their opinions when they weren't asked (although you were that time unbeknownst to me), I get very upset about that. I'm sure you wouldn't like it if I came into your club's threads giving my opinion on every decision you guys make right? See what I mean? So I apologize for that but I hope you see where I'm coming from. When I first saw your post this time I almost lost it, but I understand it if you're just voicing your concern for an event you planned.

Johny- I'm so sorry to hear about your split, that is a complete shock to me, you guys seemed so great together. I wouldn't say you're being dramatic, I'm sure everyone understands this has to be a tough time for you and I for one am here for you. If you ever need to talk just let me know.

Again I'm sorry about what happened to you at the mansion and I wish there was some way I could help (let me know if there is). And I don't remember if I thanked anyone for the lasagna or if I even knew who to thank, but it was good and I thank you now. How much for two servings? LOL I had such a great time with everyone last year, I just wish we could do it again.

Carl- Don't worry about it buddy, we would have been finished by the time you got down here anyway. (What do you think of your new purchase btw?) We got the injectors swapped in just a few hours, and after swapping in brand new plugs it fired right up, but still ran like crap. Josh was saying he doesn't think it's the engine (there's still a part of me that thinks the engine is bad though) but that the turbos are bad, and I agree with him on that part. My intercooler is probably full of oil. We took it for a spin afterwards and the power kinda drops off where the turbo should be, especially when the second one kicks in. So now I'm looking for a good used set of twins (NOT rebuilt), or if I can get the money together, something like a T04S or just something inexpensive. Oh Carl, I have a set of injectors you can use HAHAHA.

So basically what I'm saying is I'm NOT going to Deal's Gap, mostly because of the car, and partly because of the stigma it holds now after these last two arguments. But MOSTLY because of the car, haha. I think Josh said he's not going either now, so you might be camping alone BC. Sorry bro.

*post whoring this morning...*

Also... just wanted to clarify something so everyone in the group will understand. We plan to take the FB this year to the dragon ONLY because the FC was going to require much more $$ to get it rolling AND running right than just getting the FB to roll right. The FB has had NO mechanical problems... only a few maintenance issues with the stock suspension. The FC has had one coolant issue after another before realizing one of the main culprits has been a bad waterpump all this time. We didn't want to play guessing games and gamble the chance of getting up to DGRR and having some MORE issues with overheating. The coolant seal has been fine all along, so it seems to be everything but that this far. LOL

I have EVERY FREAKIN intention of using my birthday present suspension you guys bought me for the FC!! I will be installing this and getting it ready for VIR events and other Driving events for this summer!

We were getting crunched for time to get a car ready for DGRR and the SRT-4 handles like a bus.

I just wanted to make that understood to anyone who thought I was just being an *** and not being grateful for such an awesome birthday present.

*insert evil mad scientist cackle*

...Just wait til I am finished with the FC!!! VIR won't even know what hit em! lol (and NO I am not putting an LS1 in it... so hush.)

I understand where you are coming from, Eric. You are smart to not take a chance with the car for an event that requires alot out of the car and that far away from home. If we didn't have the FB, I would probably not be going either, because the FC is too risky and unreliable right now to drive that far away from home/civilization.

It is also kinda nice for David and me to have the FB to work on together as our car, rather than take the broken FC that is more like "my car." Gives us something to share together to make his first DGRR more memorable.

Eric,
Ill PM my buddy to see if he has any used good turbo's. Maybe it is a good time to rebuild the engine when you replace the turbo's, you know "preventative maintenance "I think my leak is the fuel pulsation dampener?? I've heard that they are a common problem on these cars, to replace it I have to take off the UIM, and probably the fuel rail. We put new fuel injector o rings in it, and I doubt they are leaking. I bought some fuel dye that will tell me exactly where the fuel is coming from.

The new ATV is pretty cool, I ordered a new carb for it last night and it may need a clutch, but hopefully I can get it to at least run with the new carb!!

Well, first of all, Johny, I'm really sorry to hear about your situation.

Structure for the club? No, I don't think we need that. Feelings of resentment might come if that's the case. It also puts pressure on someone to show up to a meet even when he/she might not want to. We have been doing things just fine since I've been a part of the group. When a serious issue warrants a group discussion this should be brought up by someone, anyone at a meet.

Carl, as far as you coming to a meet and having only ~3-4 people; it's a very unpredictable thing. Sometimes you can get a feel for the size of an upcoming meet, but there is really no way to tell.

All in all, I think RRDI is doing just fine with its amorphous structure. People are beginning to suggest different events and things that we should do at some of our meets, and this should continue.

I'm sure you already know this, but PLEASE, if you don't already have a nice fire extinguisher for your car, get one NOW.
