I'm looking at Sam's and the BX cause those are the only places I have credit with that I can get tires, haha. Melba Toast has already hit my other Cards pretty hard

Did you guys here me take off last night? I think I had a power loss issue in second gear as I flew through the intersection. Yeah, I hit 9500 and the fuel cut off kicked in! I had to take my eyes off the tack as some jerk pulled in front of me.

Have always done it this way, numerous times, in the 'ol days of course... used a hammer, and sometimes a bat or other appropriate round 'roller' object...

Well, if I get tires soon I may just try the bat. Not like it can't be fixed if I mess up, just depends on how bad. At this point I think that's what I'll be doing, and I have a bat in my garage right now so I'm ready, haha. Did you use aftermarket wheels or stock wheels to do it? If I need flare I guess I'm outta luck though. Oh well, it'll happen one way or another. I'd like to do all this soon though, I'm still trying to make Deal's Gap with the 8s.

Actually since these were all typically race cars... we used whatever widest available wheels were allowed, usually stock... the rub came in putting on the larger sized tires and their interference with the fender flanges... in any case, to do it with a bat you need tires of some sort, mounted on some kind of wheels (don't much matter what they are jes soes they're round :) to leverage the bat or roller device... if you don't have any wheels with tires mounted to use a 'roller' with, you can do it all with a hammer as I noted above...

The simplest way I can think to describe the technique is to start near the ends where the fender has the most support, hammering the inner edge of the flange at say 45 degrees in the outer direction to start with, then either upward or outward toward the inside of the skin as eyeballing it dictates, trying to get it to bend just inboard of the margin of the fender opening, then nicely rounding it so the flange ends up pointing parallel to the skin versus its normal perpendicular orientation... as I mentioned you do a little at a time, overlapping the striking points, all the way around so it doesn't tend to be wavy, then repeating, working it a little more with each pass...

As for flaring, you should be able to get some *after* getting the flange rolled under which will weaken the fender in the outward direction so it can be moved out as far as it's going to 'stretch' without having to go to add-on types which obviously you guys are trying to avoid and don't likely need... it may help at this point to loosen the bolts at the ends of the fenders to allow movement, but keeping in mind that his will cause some extra gap with the adjoining sheetmetal and needs to be monitored as you push / pull the fender out...

Jes a suggestion FWIW...

IMSA RS 69 (what is your real name again? Sorry if I've already asked)- Yeah, I was referring to which wheels you used to roll the fenders. I'll probably use stock cause I don't want to chance messing up the new wheels. I'll try a couple different things I guess. With the bat and a rubber mallet. Actually my rubber mallet is kinda big, so I might go pick up a rawhide mallet or something, maybe a smaller rubber mallet, just harder. Thanks for the write-up! I would think loosening the bolts and then hammering on it would mess up the mounting holes though, wouldn't it?

Josh- I think if you use a heat gun it will help not mess up the paint.

Original or correctly applied re-paint shouldn;t be a problem...

As for the hammering... the hits are to the inner flange edge at first and then to the already starting to roll up portion of the flange surface, the only probable 'chipping' would be perhaps some slight amount at the edge only... and any paint dings will be where it isn't visible... I don't ever recall having any problems with the paint...

The only other issue is the possible 'cracking' of the paint at the original bend if you try to make it too sharp of a radius, as in just bending the flange sharply along the original bend... the idea is to try to get it to start bending a nice, but small radius just inboard of that, hence the striking at an angle versus hammering it straight up and causing it to just make the existing 90 deg. sharper...

You keep referring to wheels, but I assume you intend for them to have tires on them, right... I don't think you'd mess up the wheels as the 'roller' is only in contact with the shoulder of the tires... and they need to be off when hammering in order to have room to get under there to swing the dang hammer...

The hammer I always used was a regular steel ball peen or body type... whatever you use needs to be pretty hard, I don't think a 'rubber' one would do very good, however one of the really hard dead blow type plastic / polymer ones should work...

Loosening the bolts isn't done until after you've through hammering and perhaps any initial 'rolling' of the flange... you might do a little more 'rolling' after loosening the bolts, but just pulling / pushing ought to do it... the holes should have some slop in them as they have to have some adjustment built in for original factory alignment... you're not wanting it to move much anyway or as I noted you'll get unsightly gaps at the juncture with adjoining sheet metal... loosening the bolts is to allow the fender to be able to move so as to allow some slop for it to 'shorten up' the overall straight line distance from end to end as you curve out the middle for any 'flaring'...

Well I was referring to using the bat method when talking about the wheels. And I don't want to take any chances whatsoever on damaging the wheels, even though it would only be touching the tire. I've waited 8 months for these damn things, I'm almost afraid to even drive on them! Especially since they already have a nick on the edge, and they were in boxes, with the bonnet things over the faces. Hard telling how fragile these things are. If I'm using the hammer, obviously the wheel would be removed, HAHAHA.

Well maybe I'll try the hammer first. I was going to start with a bat, then maybe finish with a hammer. Does that sound feasible?

OK I think I see what you're saying now. So you're saying I would be kinda lining it up by loosening the bolts to move the panel around, but not a whole lot cause I don't want to throw it off that much, right? I'm just doing it as a finishing touch of sorts, to get the right fit?

The reason I said that was because I've read in a couple different places, when they used the actual fender rolling tool, to put heat on the paint to loosen it up a bit to avoid cracking. Now I've heard it both ways though...one to put it on the OUTSIDE of the fender, and one for the INSIDE so as not to burn the paint or make it bubble, but to heat the metal rather. I'm not sure if either of these was to help bend the lip, or if it was mainly just to assist with the paint. I have a heat gun made by Revlon (one of Barb's old hairdryers that she left), that's what I was using to try to "bake" my paint on the calipers last night, haha. Since I don't have an oven other than the one for food, and I don't have a heat gun. Hopefully it works for the fenders, not even sure yet if it works for the paint. After three days of sitting there, they still weren't dry!!! I have to try something else.

Great news...just ordered a set of tires. Dunlop SP Sport FM901 in the sizes I wanted...235/40 front and 265/35 rear. I emailed people through the Base Exchange and they said they had 3 of the rear tires left, so I'm just barely getting these. They should ship out tomorrow, so hopefully I can still make it to Deal's Gap.
