Where can I get a decent price for Royal Purple oil, and what weight should I get for gear/transmission oil?

Hey Steve, good to hear from you. Well, actually I'm kinda glad you and the rest of the Leverette FC Pit Crew didn't show up Saturday night. There might have been a fight over who got to work on Eric's car.

But really it was very interesting to actually see an FD breakdown. You always hear the stories about what happened but to see it in person really makes an impression on how fragile these cars are. It was just sittin' quietly in the parking lot, no one around it and the engine cooling down from Eric's trip up to Raleigh from Hope Mills. All of a sudden steam was rolling out from the hood! Of course it was probably the original OEM hose and in all fairness the car got its owner to his destination before finally letting go.

The best price I found when I was researching Royal Purple is from Tires & Parts on S. Dawson St. in Raleigh. They'll sell it to RRDI members for $4.99 a quart for 20W50 engine oil. You can look them up in the yellow pages and call to make sure they have our weight in stock. They told me that if they had to order it, it would be there the next day if you order it in the morning. I know it will reduce your emissions, I have hardly any white smoke now when I start the car in the mornings.

Bert... sweetie... re-read what I said... I asked about tranny/gear oil, too. What weight tranny/gear oil should I get?
Glad to know we get a discount with them, though... that's pretty cool.

.............White smoke? I'm gonna be careful how I word this, cuz Lindsay has a mind of her own, but I don't have white smoke when I start her up. Is she supposed to smoke? Even though my girl's legally allowed to smoke this year, she only did it once when her alternator went bad.

Just get some Redline MT-90 and call it a day. It costs about $11 a quart, but its worth every penney. That might be my biased opinion cus that is all i have ever used, but it works really well. Search around the forum, i think you will get the same review...

For an S4 you need 2.6 quarts of 80W90 GL-5 gear oil for the tranny and about 1.5 quarts for the differential. The S5 FSM recommends 75W90 GL-5. The smoke I was referring to is the exhaust on start up when the car has sat over the weekend without being driven. Due to the fact that the rotors are lubed by the Oil Metering Pump squirting a little engine oil into the housings when the engine is running there will be a little oil burnt when you start the engine. In fact if your engine is running your burning a little oil just because of the rotor lubrication. That's all I was saying, it should actually be blue tinged exhaust hot white smoke.

Be sure and buy a 10' roll of plastic tubing (1/2" OD I think will work great) to get the oil from the bottles and into the tranny and differential. Do a search on the 2nd gen forum for a write up on how to do this using gravity.

After letting the filler plugs soak up the penetrating oil overnight I was able to finally get them loose and had no problems changing both the differential oil and tranny oil by using gravity feed and a little air pressure to push the diff oil up into the filler hole. Put new washers on the drain plugs and wrapped teflon tape on the threads. By the way, I needed a 23mm socket to fit the differential filler plug.

This is an easy job once you've removed the filler plugs and figured out how to gravity feed or force the oil into the filler holes. I think it took a couple hours to drain, fill and check both the tranny and differential.

Very interesting on the breakage. How does it run with the new subframe repairs?

Bert must have gotten a sex change, cuz I saw a black s5 going north on US1 this afternoon, but it was a short female with a ponytail. She was kinda cute. LOL

How much $ was that plastic surgery, Bert? Dang! ...you didn't sacrifice any FC money, did you??

Yes I do, here is the thread, https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=446646

Christina, now really which is more important a sex change or rotary needs? I'm saving my money for a set of 17" wheels and new tires. The sex change is way down on my to do list. Hate I've missed that S5 on Capital, where did you see it?

Congrats on the GRR thread. What help are you and Josh going to need for make it happen?

I think Josh and I have everything taken care of. Thanks for offering, though.

She was on US1 (Capital) heading North... past the DMV going towards it, I believe.

Very nice. If it wasn't yours, then dang! We got another girl with GOOD taste somewhere around here!! yay!

Ray and I and a couple of other guys are going two the dyno at Carolina Auto masters in downtown Durham in the morning. I know it is kinda short notice, but if anybody would like to come and watch or participate let me know. We are planning on being there at 10. We were planning on just doing two cars, but maybe he will have time to do a car or two more. I personally have to be out of there by 11:30 to be at work at 12. Just though i would extend the offer....

Judson, welcome to the rotarian world. The only true reality! Glad to hear that there is another FC owner in the Triad area. You should hook up with Joey FB and FC owner and TO, RX8 and future RX7 owner, from the Burlington/Mebane area and comeover to the Grand Rotary Rally of NC next weekend and let everyone meet you and admire your treasure.

Glad you found the RX7Club site, it will serve you well in the future.
