For y'all who aren't going to the Down East event, can we meet up at Char-grill?
I miss y'all, and I asked for that Saturday off, since I am assuming that's kinda the 2nd weekend in May... since this Sunday is the first.
Lemme know...

Guys, I need some help from anyone who knows something about S5 transmissions. I posted this in the 2nd gen section but no one responded.
I'm using a 91 na transmission to go into my 84 GSL-SE. Mainly because it's a hell of a lot easier and cheaper to find FC trannies instead of FB ones. The tailshaft from the FB won't quite fit on the new transmission because the S5s have a harmonic balancer (I think that's what the FSM called it) on it. If you've ever taken the tail off it's the big metal thing that looks like a weight. I have to get this thing off before I can put the tranny back together, and have my GSLSE back on the road. But...I'm not sure how. I took off the snap rings and speedo gear that were in front of it off, and there's a giant nut that appeared to be holding it on that I removed. But..the thing still won't budge.
I checked the 91 FSM and there's one more piece in there that's called the "taper cotter" that may need to be removed to pull the balancer out. Only problem is the FSM shows that it's removable, but doesn't mention how. So, does anyone know? I need to get this car done, it's currently at my parents' house and I need to get it off their yard ASAP.

I am not talking with 100% knowledge, but I would assume like on many other transmissions that this balancer is also press fitted, and will require a gear puller or perhaps a press to remove. again, i am only talking about my experience with other trannies not an s5 tranny.

Sorry, I was busy sending an email to the Wedding Mansion people. You'd think a guy with as many RX7s as you have would have more to worry about and spend his time on than how fast I can respond to him! Chill man, go sit in the princess, or Tiffany, or start working on your project AE car. :0) (0:
Here is what the site says it is available for groups with minimun 2 day stays, the rate is $750 - $1500 a night. I figure that is the range based on time of year. If we get 10 people willing to go next year that is $75 - $85 a night, for 2 nights it is $150 - $170 for the weekend plus food and drinks. I figure we'll probably come out with about the same expense as staying at Fontana if you count the cost of meals at their restaurant. If we can get a few more to commit and share the food and lodging expenses then we can do a little better.
I have sent them an email requesting more information about the mansion and what their rates would be for an early April weekend. I'm waiting to hear from them.

I wouldn't mind just rebuilding the factory shifter but like the shorter throw of after market shifters if they are a good fit and work fine.
Ashraf, have you got any advice on rebuilding the factory shifter versus installing a new short shift kit?

Just for the record, I picked up my car today from the transmission shop and it runs fine as far as I've been able to notice. With the 8.5# flywheel and 6 puck clutch it makes for a hell-of-a stop and go experience in traffic but hey... maybe thats not what I'll end up doing with it. (in the long run)

I don't know exactly what you're talking about as I have not pulled my tranny apart, but a "taper cotter" is usually a cone-shaped cotter pin that holds the damn thing by being pressed into place. I often just go at stuff like that with a nice 3lb hammer or something, but a gear-puller may be the more "sophisticated" answer. See if you can tell how and where it is stuck in. As was mentioned earlier... those things are usually press fitted so it'll really be jammed in there if it is what I'm thinking it is.

Bert,
I have Mazdatrix brake lines and a Mazdatrix short shifter. Here's the deal with the short shifter. The throw is MUCH shorter and shifts are more precise, but it still has the notchiness of an FC shifter. I'd look for it used, as Mazdatrix lists it at $192. Removing the nice warm breeze will require a new rubber boots in the shifter, which are sold separately for I believe $50ish. See the Mazdatrix write-up on installing the shifter http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/ssinstal.htm . At the next drive in I'll let you sit in there and get a feel for it.
As far as the brake lines... they're a good investment. They're $100. I got them for Christmas. You'll have to bleed the system though--Jeremy could help you with that if you've never done it. He's the one that helped me bleed mine.
Let me tell you though, if what you want to do is reduce the brake pedal travel then the brake lines alone won't do the trick. What you need to do is adjust the brake booster pushrod. I can help you with that if you want me to come by some time. What you need to do is unbolt the brake master cylinder. There are two 12mm nuts and a 10mm nut on this gray thingie which needs to be moved out of the way before you can get to one of the bolts.
After you unbolt the master cylinder you should see the pushrod. It may be in there a bit so pull it out with some pliers or something. Then to lengthen it hold one end with a vice grip to keep it from turning and adjust the pushrod with a 7mm socket. Don't lengthen it too much or your brakes will drag. That's what happened when I got into my accident... the brakes were dragging, the car wouldn't move, and I absent mindedly forgot to set the parking brake. Most likely you will have to adjust it several times to get it where you want it.

The guy's name is Jeff Brown. He painted Bert's car too. I believe his cell phone number is 919-610-1987 . Jeff works at a body shop in Raleigh on Lake Wheeler road, but his side work is done in his neighbor's garage in Johnston County. Call him up, tell him that myself and Bert recommended him to you. He'll probably want you to bring the car by his work so he can look at it and give you an estimate. He may be working on another project right now so you should call him soon and discuss when both of you are available to have it done.
