RX-7 Featured at Road Atlanta
Sorry for the repost guys, but I want to make sure everyone knows about this. Advertisments will be placed next week on RX7Club.com
I haven't officially announced it yet, but Mazda has signed on to be the Presenting Sponsor for the Classic Motorsports Mitty at Road Atlanta April 28-30.
The theme is "The Sports Cars of Japan" to pay tribute to the Japanese cars that rocked the motorsports world. As you may know, the RX-7 holds the record for the most IMSA wins of any car model ever made. We are expecting at least 1,000 Japanese cars in the infield and I'd like to see RX-7's of all generations show up to support the rotory. Mazda will bringing out several famous IMSA GTU, GTO, GTP and LMP cars for display and for racing. Additionally, Jim Downing and other famous Mazda racing legends will be on hand for autographs and seminars.
We have commissioned world famous motorsports artist Hector Cadematori to create a piece of original art depicting the Racing Beat #7 and #17 RX-7's at Road Atlanta as they took the IMSA GTU championship at Road Atlanta in 1980. The new poster art will be distributed soon.
This event has grown by leaps and bounds since Classic Motorsports magazine has been involved and it will continue to grow even more with Mazda behind it.
I really hope to have a chance to meet everyone as this will be an amazing gathering. For those of you who haven't been to the Mitty or don't know anything about it, check out the following links to see what kind of cars were on track last year:

In addition to those cars, we'll have the KUMHO MINI Coopers and new Lotus Elises available for participants to autocross. Keep an eye on the main page of ClassicMotorsports.net as the next few days you will find a link to a Web site dedicated to the Mitty.
Spread the word around this and other rotary forums - it's going to be amazing.

There's an ad in the issue that is shipping next week. Advanced ticket sales will begin mid-February on the ClassicMotorsports.net Web site.
When you buy your advanced ticket, we'll ask you what corral area you'd like to be in. This is a really important event and we'd like to see more than 250 rotary engined cars attend. The more rotary fans that help promote this thing, the more rotary engined cars will show. So let's let everyone know about it and get them to attend.

Hey, could I just bring a car, display, and not race it? I'd love to be there and location is great.
It's a bone stock 87 TII but it would look good in a rotarty line up still has clearcoat on origional paint, no dents. If, we are aiming for as many rotarys as possible, I know atlanta doesn't have too many to offer. Private message me about displaying info andI'd love to be there around all the rx7s Atlanta has to offer as well as surrounding states.

I've raced the Mitty since 1997. Spectators are encouraged to bring their Mazdas to show in the infield.
Track touring passes can be purchased (used to be about $40) for slow driving around Road Atlanta during church quite hours sunday morning . This is one way to say "I've driven at Road Atlanta."
Almost all the Mazda race cars will paddock in the pro paddock, on the infield side of the race track. That's where I will be with my blue 1979 RX-7 13B peripheral port GTU Mazda. Admission to the event includes paddock admission to get up close with all the race cars.
If you can only make it for one day of this 4 day weekend, then Saturday is usually the best day to come to a vintage race event.

I hope to get time to make a full write up soon, but here is the short story of my old blue 1979 tub chassis GTU RX-7 last weekend at Road Atlanta:
Saturday qualifying: - qualified 1st in class out of 11 cars in our GTU class
Sat All Mazda race: Finished 7th overall, had a hell of a battle with two IMSA GTP 2 rotor Lolas, ran between the two of them most the race, then the one behind me finally out braked me about a half lap before the checkered flag. I was driving the hell out of my car, sliding most of the turns, keeping ahead of that prototype. I finished just ahead of Jim Downing driving the 4 rotor GTP car (only because he didn't qualify well and was not driving full tilt since he didn't own the car.)
Sat Historic GT qualifier race: I finished 1st in class
Wonderful Saturday night party, lots of beer, wine and seafood. Great band. Thanks Grassroots Motorsports and Classic Motorsports Magazines for sponsoring the party and organizing the race weekend.
Sunday Japanese car Feature race: turned out to be mostly Datsuns (Nissans) vs. Mazda, about 20 cars total - I won that race overall. I felt like I was on top of the world.
Late sunday Historic GT race: At the start, a late model TransAm Camaro committing suicide almost took me with him, but I just barely escaped him taking me with him by mere inches. I was running 1st in class, then my transmission started shifting bad, then the tranny broke - no operating gears left, I had to pull over to the side of the track and watch everyone else go by me. That quickly deflated my ego and brought me back down to reality.
Overall, I had a wonderful weekend. I was able to turn consistent 1:35 laps.
If anyone has any photos of me car 79 in action at the Mitty race, please email them to me at:

Thanks to those on this forum who stopped by and visited with me in the paddock, I enjoyed talking with you.
