GA Planning a Mazda / Rotary car show at Lawrenceville, GA. Mazda Dealership

I am attempting to put together a car show for the local rotary owners in GA and the surrounding states.

I am looking for possible show candidates in several categories.
The categories will be determined shortly, but it suffices to say that there will be at least categories for perfect stock vehicles, and those that are professionally modified.

I am attempting to work with the SE Mazda headquarters to provide some MAZDASPEED vehicles.

There will be a process of qualification that will be used, where each car is reviewed and categorized. You may submit photos of your vehicle(s) to me by email or some other method that we can arrange.

There will be a lineup of all Mazda RX series rotary cars from the 1st gen to the RX-8 on display. I am also looking for submissions in this lineup.

Your car must be original, un-modified and look as close to the factory original model as possible for this particular lineup. They will most likely be placed in the showroom for the weekend (TBD). Think of whether or not your car can look like it did back when the car was in the showroom on its model year. That would be what we want in that particular lineup.

I welcome your submissions, questions and assistance.

I have set up an email server using the Google Apps features to allow me to receive email on this and future rotary related events.

Please email your submissions to
SNIPER_X@ROTARYDRIVER.COM

Be sure to post your questions and suggestions in this forum for all to discuss.

Legalese boilerplate:
Please take into consideration that this show will be during a Saturday, Sunday or both, and will be a family event. I have been advised to discourage excessively loud cars, or those that would be inclined to street race or act otherwise irresponsibly.

Just to be clear, I only have two categories thought of so far, there should be more, and i'm looking for suggestions and assistance in putting the show together.

Anyone?

If I'm reading that correctly, you're pretty much eliminating 95% of us from entering being judged. Many of us pride ourselves on modifying our own cars, not having checkbook created show winners. The rest of us don't necessarily want our cars completely stock, either. What are we supposed to do?

I would add that most of the local group are not "car show" types.

Now with that being said, you give us a place to congregate without a bunch of rules and you could have a good turn out.

I guess I would be out since my car would be deemed to loud. Most people I know would be out since they are modified.

about the "professionally modified" cars....how bout those that don't pay someone else to do it and do their own mods? i guess it's professionally done or nothing, huh.

Cool

I dont know where some of you are getting the idea that "stock" and "pro. mod" are the only categories to be in the show?!!

Allow me to quote the original message:

"I am looking for possible show candidates in several categories.

The categories will be determined shortly, but it suffices to say that there will be at least categories for perfect stock vehicles, and those that are professionally modified"

...and then there is the OTHER post right below it:
"Just to be clear, I only have two categories thought of so far, there should be more, and i'm looking for suggestions and assistance in putting the show together."
I'm not an idiot guys.

If there are suggestions for other categories, then let hear them!
I posted this here to open this up for discussion and to get more ideas.

So i'm open to suggestions, let's hear what your thinking.

You can do the basic ones:
- Best Interior
- Best Sound
- Best Custom (changing dash, seats, everything)
- Best Exterior
- Best Paint
- Best Engine
- Best Single
- Best Twin

I dout you can do all of those, but just brain storming.

Thats more like it!

You're right, I can't do all of those, but, great suggestions.

Let me look at some other car show categories like at other import and musclecar shows, anyone have suggestions where to look? What they do?

Here's my pretty much stock 84 GSL, but it's my daily driver so I don't know about getting it into a show. Maybe we can just show up at a specified time?

.......I have been advised to discourage excessively loud cars.......

Looks to me to be a "car show". Limited to Rx7s and Rx8s and that the cars need to be "pre-approved" and not to loud.

Seems to me that kills 75% of the people that would possibly come.

What about the old school cars?
Can people just show up? Or are all cars required to "register"
You mention a 2 day event - Can we come and go as we please?
Who will decide what is to loud?

We are not trying to bust your *****. Just trying to let you know most in the area fall in at least one of these areas:

Modified and loud. Last minute decisions to go. Would not consider our vehicles "show cars". Show up late. Leave early. Modify ourselves. Been to 3 or 4 rotary meets this summer (Not including regular OGTA meets).......ect.

Last Tuesday you could have met a bunch of us and seen what we drive. I heard you are not far from the meet spot.

I tried to get him to come out, but he was a bit busy. Understandable. A lot of people didn't show up last Tuesday! It felt a little empty.

This is one of those times when the Atlanta region is a mockery for a car club. KEEP READING
It seems like every time we try to meet there are all these expotential factors make it nearly impossible!!

We used to go the Varsity, but that has long worn thin and stupid.

Then we used to Los Reyes, and I don't know why that stopped.

Dave & Busters was a great concept, but personally I don't want to pay $30.00 or so dollars just talk about 7s. Thats also how I feel about Andretti, you can agree or disagree

Our Savannah meet last year for 777 was one of the best turnouts in while, but then again we are dealing w the Savannah division. Which seems to me that they actually like getting together and shooting the ****. ( It would be awesome we could do it every year!)

What I'm getting at is I don't understand the resistance that is involved with ATL getting together and having a real meet. I've offered having a Seven BBQ, FREE just bring the meat and beer!
None the less, a car show sounds awesome, and I'd love to bing my babies out to frolic with the other Sevens and the Eights. But really, let's not make this more complicated then it needs to be. Really if we could just hang out at the dealership chat it up, eat some food and be rotorheads I think the turnout would be greater.

My statement about the loud cars is from the dealership.

Their statment was that they have people trying to buy cars and not all of them are rotaries.

I guess that they were concerned that extremely loud cars would be crusing around the lot(s), and customers would get thier ears blasted and leave.

I'm fully aware that a modded rotary is louder than normal, they know that too.

I would translate thier "loudness request" as "please don't bring something with straight pipes and criuse it all over thier dealership."

Even that car would be welcome though as long as it came in and sat there for show like the rest of the cars. Running it on occasion or otherwise not driving all over the lot(s) - not too strict if you ask me, just sounds sensable.

I would also address the pre-approved concern by saying that the pre-approval is ONLY for the cars in the categories of "Stock" and the ones in the "History of rx-7" lineup inside the showroom. - again a sensable request

This is NOT an example of how the " Atlanta region is a mockery for a car club".

Everyone is welcome to attend, come and go as they please and i see no reason this can't be a relaxed and fun event.

As far as that 1st gen pictured above...

It's really nice and I would love to see it in the show!

I'm not knocking the show, it has just been so difficult to organize Sevens and their owners getting together for the cause.

I love to see a bunch of rotaries all in the same place at the same time!!!

I'm sure there will be several OG@TAs checking out the 7's at the dealership, even if their cars aren't quite up to standards. OG@TA meets the first Tuesday of every month after work at Jeffery's in Suwanee.

It's always a congenial and fun get together, with lots of different Rotorheads mixing it up (we even like 13Bs, although we tend to not give them proper credit).

There have also been weekend meets from time to time and these have always been great. Zoomfest, the joint OSJC/OG@TA meeting at Ft. Yargo, Lakefest at Crit's, Mountain Day, to name a few recent ones.

Check the OG@TA post for lots of pictures to see if you might want to join the fun.

Great images!

Lets out this "standards" thing to rest though.....

The dealership mentioned the standards thing to ensure that the cars in the showroom wouldn't be anything short of something that would belong there.

They were hesitant of having a show, and yet really liked the idea, these were thier concerns and I mentioned that I felt that noone would bring a car to the show, with the intent of showing it, unless it was in good condition.

So, let's move forward without worring about what gets "accepted" and what doesn't. I beleive they ALL will be.

Andy has a burnt orange-ish colored SA that would be PERFECT in the showroom, in my opinion. Allen is the man who owns the black S5 FC in one of the pictures above. That car is perfect as well. Now we'd just need an FD to complete the 'history' of the RX-7. See how useful the OGTA? We're the ****!

If the dealership is concerned with the volume of less than stock RX-7s, there is a simple solution. Signs. Make a witty sign that says: Shh! Boinger Shoppers Among Us!"

I don't believe that any club member of ours would do something rude like try to show off their decibel level. We've got class. Haven't been kicked out of Jefferey's yet!

Let's try to lure some people out, shall we? Start a Barbequre. If someone volunteered with a HUGE grill (Maybe the dealer wants to provide a grill, chicken and soda/water?) and the only 'registration' for this meet is a large amount of side item. Free BBQ Chicken and drinks for anyone driving a Rotary? It could also gain the dealership some interest. Maybe free chicken for any person who comes to the dealership and test drives an RX-8? Everybody wins. We get our fun day off, the dealer gains prospective shoppers. These are the kinds of ideas that should be fired off. Creative, not constricting!

That sounds great. You set the time and the place and I am sure a bunch of us will be there.

Aslo, I will +1 for Andy and Allens cars for the "stock" show.

Collin I agree, Andy's orange SA is a must show and Allen's black-on-black FC looks way better than anything on the Mazda lot (because he's buffing it all the time). And your imaginative marketing strategies suggest there may be life beyond the pizza parlor after all.

But you forgot the all-important FB's and SE's in your "History of the 7" lineup! Hopefully we'll see some stockers in those categories too.

So like Billy says, sometimes us Old Guys need some organizing. So tell us when, where and for how long.

PS, if you're FB is stock except for a full RB exhaust system, does that count for the "History of the RX-7" category? I kind of see it like ripping the Stromberg out of my '78 MG and putting some SU's back in.

Guys, Jeremy's car is a perfect candidate for the FD in the RX-7 history lesson. Most folks don't know an SA from a 12A FB, and wouldn't expect to see three first gens, so I'd suggest a clean GSL-SE (mine is not) and a clean TurboII would be needed to fill out the guest list.

Personally, I'll be parking across the street but I'll be happy to walk across to look around.

I have to agree with you. I don't really want my car being seen. Neither of them are pretty enough.

Well I don't agree Crit, the differences between the relatively primitive SA, the highly refined FB and the experimental SE are a major part of RX-7 history.

And first gen RX-7's, in all their incarnations, remain the ultimate statement of a rotary sports car for the common man (you and me Crit). Why not put them front and center?

However I do agree Jeremy's car would be a fine representative of the FD class.

But I also disagree with you guys about your cars, they are beautiful. 20 year old rotaries that you drive every day, it doesn't get any prettier than that. Not many boingers can say that.

Wink GTUAGAIN - Puts down polishing cloth!!

I do not polish it all the time - only Friday/Saturday before show events after tracking the car or running it at 7K thru the N. GA Mtns (hills). I would like to participate if the weekend is one where I am not out of town beating up on attorneys who want blood!! There are many great examples at the OGTA meetings but more importantly the people are great!!
89 GTU Black/Black 35,500 miles now - hit 35,000 at Road Atlanta PDX
GTUAGAIN - Regards ... Alan (Help me build my visible wankel NIB kit please!!!!
