I finally got some work done on the FC today. I pulled everything off the old motor besides the oil cooler lines and the heater hose, then once the transmission and motor mounts are unbolted it will be ready to pull out once again.

I started swapping things onto the new motor, and when I went to bolt on the lower intake manifold I decided to take off the stock gasket and make another one with some gasket roll I had. I guess since it wasn't as thick as the stock gasket, when I bolted the LIM to the block it cracked the lower rear corner. So another S4 LIM and all new gaskets here I come...

Anyone have an extra one they'd part with cheap?

Guess I'm going to PAP north and then the other parts yard beside it tomorrow to get a LIM and the gasket. Mazdatrix and rockauto both want atleast $40 for a new gasket, plus I've still got to find another LIM. Funny fact, I just sold my spare S4 LIM to a friend in Lawrenceville so he could get his FC running for $20. How much do you bet I'm gonna end up spending more than that get the same part

Looking on the bright side, maybe I'll find a cool part or something tomorrow. Scavenging a junk yard is always fun

Really? Strangely, I've never had a problem... or known anyone who had the problem, other than Mr. Linton.

I eliminated my pulsation dampener today, finally... thanks to getting to watch Britten and the perk of using Kristy's shady garage! Though I had to get a ride to autozone for one damn fuel line...

Unbolted the typical pesky ground to check for corrosion underneath the terminal. Strangely, there wasn't any... yet I had an annoying hesitation in the usual place. I guess sanding down the grounding point did the trick though, because it's gone.. for now.

I now have three - count 'em three - S4.5 idiot light clusters to re-solder. My clock started to flicker, and I know the other two have flickering clocks. Fun fun.

I need to more effectively ground my damn CB antenna. Other drivers get a lot of squeal when I transmit.

Had to replace my battery terminals. The positive terminal was so freakin' old that it SNAPPED when I went to tighten it back up... and my negative terminal for whatever reason just didn't feel like being efficient.

Brett, what time are you going to pull a part? Unfortunately I have to go with my mom to the mall of georgia around 1.. maybe I can come help with the car later in the day, I dunno.

Nini.

The common cause of ALL the cracked manifolds is being OVER torqued!! 14 foot lbs is NOT alot of force. So, to all that are cracking mounting tabs off of intake manifolds,..ease up a bit and the issue will dissapear. I promise!

Crit! Where is the best part of that video? I want to see some turf flyin!!

You won't see any turf, but the spin is the last 20 sec. or so. Steve figured that the run was a loss, so he shut down the camera, plus we were due to pit in anyway. What he didn't realize, though, was that the post-spin commentary inside the car was probably worth getting.

I'll know better next time!

Actually, I just watched the youtube clip, and it's shorter than the original. My original file went well into the spin, two cars going by, and back on-track. I'll have to fiddle with it and get another upload.

The only full lap on there, starting right after the MazdaSpeed Miata passed me going into 6, was my fastest of the day at 1.27.8. Steve turned a pair of good laps at 1.30.4 and 1.30.0 back to back in the Mustang before he packed up. Sam was turning right around 1.20 which was just wickedly fast. I'm curious what times everyone else put up. I particularly wanted to time Kevin and Billy since they were in stock or very lightly-modded RX-8s and I wanted to time Dave, just to see where everyone was at. Sam's 1.20 laps were just wicked though, and his tires held on no matter what. I can't believe they never squealed in the time I was in the car with him.

Interesting side-note: Steve nearly overheated the Mustang, as it was well over half on the gauge that normally sits very low, like an FB. He also killed the supercharger bearings and had to take off the drive belt and plumbing for the drive home. Funniest of all, though, is that his brand new, 2-week old all-stainless exhaust is now completely blued from the headers to the tips, and the tips went from a bright stainless finish to gold. The mufflers, cats, etc. are all blue now. Now that's some heat!

Less funnily, I managed to melt the center cap out of my front-right wheel. Back to eBay for those. I'll have to remember to remove them next time.

I'd love to, but I've tried it twice now. I'm nowhere near the 2GB limit, nor the 10-minute runtime, but it seems to always crop the last 20 sec. off. I just don't get it. I can push the video to the iwankel server if anyone else wants to try and post the video in full. Youtube is kicking my ***.

I'll bet Holly or Kristy can figure it out.

Great videos Billy, you guys are going to make a racer out of me yet.

Anybody in on the bidding on these? High bid is only $801, with 2 hours to go.

I actually called Matt (the guy who made that animation) last week, and he doesn't have any good models. He said he just drew sketches over photographs he found, scaled them, and threw them into 3dstudio. It looks like it would make a great solid model for a rotary, but sadly it's not.

Funny thing is, I just sold my spare S4 LIM to a friend for $20 about 2 weeks ago. Then I ended up buying this one for $60... lol. But I got some goodies along with it. An S4 waterpump housing neck with an un-broken overflow tube, an S4 fuse box cover, some strut mount covers, an S4 TPS, and some other junk that I always end up needing.

But yeah, I've heard of quite a few people breaking them myself... I think mine might have had a bit of an old gasket somewhere between a mating surface since even the new manifold seemed to not sit flush on the motor. So I scraped away at both sides and everything went together good.

Alex, that makes 3 people that said they had one... lol. If my home internet was working, I should have looked on here.

But anyways, I got this one on last night with a decent gasket and a good bit of RTV. So all is good... for now. Hopefully I'll have the motors swapped out tonight/ Wednesday night. I might just have a running FC by the weekend

Ok, NOx emissions. I had my truck tested yesterday (I'm getting even older in 2 weeks ), and it passed fairly easily, but I noticed my NOx was about 250 on both tests (1300 allowed). The only reason I'm even looking into this is that the NOx readings have always been 0 on that truck. Everything else was right in line with the previous year's test. So, obviously something is just a little bit off. I did get the EGR codes a few times over the winter. So my first thought is maybe that is sticking? Unfortunately, I can't break the nut loose that holds the tube on it. Anything else I should maybe look at?

On another note: Saturday is the 4th Saturday of July. Mountain run day. There is talk of maybe even going to the Dragon. I'll still probably go even if that's the case.

Reminder from: LLSE Yahoo! Group

Title: Monthly Mountain Drive

Date: Saturday July 24, 2010
Time: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Repeats: This event repeats every month on the fourth Saturday.
Next reminder: The next reminder for this event will be sent in 5 days.
Location: North Georgia Mountains
Notes: The route changes each month, being generally decided right before leaving. =-) The meeting place is the Starbucks just east of GA400 at exit 13. Please be ready to leave by 9 AM with a full tank of gas. This drive is open to anyone, not just Lotus drivers.

Hey, we need to get the Caffeine and Octane Saturday-morning once-a-month thing on our collective calendar. I've still never been, only because I forget, but it looks to be fun. Ditto for Cars and Coffee.

By the way, here's Steve the Mustang Man riding along with Sam the Flying Canuck at 'Lil Tally.
