What did you do to get the carb running, and do you still have a hesitation in the progression circuit?
#8403
Thanks for volunteering my time, Ray. Kevin, the issue is the tunability of a Holley. Your main jets can be changed, but shouldn't need it (do you have other jets?). That leaves you with two screws, idle speed and idle mixture. That's it.

I'm not having any hesitation anymore, I can open the throttle from idle with no issues. I did adjust one screw (accident), I think it was the idle mixture. There were two of them, one on each side, and I know you're supposed to tune both to the same setting, but I don't know how to go back and fix that. I just figured it wouldn't hurt to make sure everything was set correctly before I start driving it again.

quad, those screws are the idle mixture, they're one on each side of the metering plate. a vacuum gauge is the best way to adjust them, u just adjust in or out to get the most vac. can be done by ear also, just not as accurate. with the engine at temp and idle, turn each one in til the idle starts falling, then back out til it smooths out. then the same with the other. then u adjust the idle speed with the screw on the primary plates.

I was mostly wanting to tune the idle mixture screws, and I don't have one of those fancy vacuum meter thingys.
I might just go out and get a AFM meter and clip that on there, just to make sure I'm not running lean and blow yet another motor...

Quad, follow Michael's advise. I don't know anything about Holleys (except Holly), but the procedure he discribed is identical to the way you tune a Nikki. Just take your time and let the idle settle down after each adjustment. Turn the screws in small perceptable increments (1/4 turn, 1/8 turn, 1/16 turn).
And just to save Ray having to write this, if it is good enough for a Nikki it is good enough for any carb.

All day I've been driving Nightmare, and boy howdy is she LOUD! I must have an exhaust leak or something, because she wasn't this loud before. I need to get that engine swap done to get her motor out and get it onto the Red one's shell.
Soon the day will come.

I think it's an opel with a 12A in it Holly, great exterior design on that car but mechanically it's a mid '60's US compact, not something I would want to work on.
Congrats Quad! Nobody deserves a running car right now more than you.
Nice red GS for sale:

Also, in other news, my car drove today, but it was acting up. I was driving down the road, and it would randomly stall out while I was rolling (flashbacks to when Nightmare finally kicked the bucket as a fuel injected system.) But I do remember that the gas coming out of the Holley when I re-built it was reddish, and there was a lot of sediment in the bowls, so I'm thinking I may have a fuel filter issue, which may have been causing the bowls to clog. I'm hoping that's what it is at least, unless someone else has input.
But I do have a question. Is the fuel filter for a 13B different from a 12A filter wise? I'm thinking because the pressure is so different, the screens and things may be different, but I know that the 12A and 13B filters are shaped differently, so they install differently, but will the filter inside be different too? Seeing as I have the Holley Blue pump, which much lower pressure than the traditional 13B pump, I wasn't sure if the pressure difference would make a difference...

Totally different. SE uses a steel canister mounted to the fuel pump bracket - 12A uses a plastic autozone part suspended from the body, just above the pump.

Hey, guys [and Holly]. As some of you should remember, Andrew, Ben, and I all moved back in October and were looking to have a winter meet at our house. Well, as the walrus said, "the time as come!" We're looking to make this work for everyone so let me know how Saturday, December 12th around 10 or 11 am works out for you guys. We want you all to come so we're gonna try and swing it so that everyone's schedule suits the date. In addition, we have parking for maybe 20+ cars.
It'll be a cold, all day event complete with raging bonfire, burgers, and the beer you provide (haha). Hope you guys can come by! Just reply here or text Ben or whatever if you have any questions. Don't know what they wanted me to do about the address so I guess that will be posted in the near future.
Thanks! -Juno
