Wow Crit, I work like 15 minutes from your house... Have you ever seen the guy with the black S5 GTU that also has a tan G35? There's a white S5 vert around that area too...

The guy with the white vert is here on the forum but usually lays low. I'll see if he's coming out.

Fantastic that you are going to host this meeting Crit, thanks from all of us!

One thing to consider, would having it on Saturday Feb 9 be better? More day light and time to take out carbs and things.

I'm bring that radiator and mount into work with me today, if you want me to drop it off on my way home let me know. It will be late, around 7:00, I'll be at a seminar at Emory till 6:30.

Ray, as I'm sure you know, I came by last night and picked up the radiator. I had to put a few miles on the wife's Jeep after resetting her emissions codes anyway. Saturday might be better, but I don't see Tuesday being a problem. I'm likely to be on the road in the coming weekends, so I'd say we can stick to Tuesday unless something comes up.

Car Trouble

I've been having having trouble getting the Rx-7 to start and drive while cold latley, maybe you'all could give me some sugestions. It has a real hard time firing up. Must use lots of choke and pump gas. Once started it will stall when put in gear, until it is warmed up.

Ray has suggessted checking for moisture in rotor cap and igniters. Plus check plugs and float levels. I'm going to replace plugs, cap and rotor anyway as they are old.

Could ther be some other cause?

Plugs?

P.S.

I've been using the NGK BR8EQ-14 spark plugs. Does anyone know of a better plug for the 1984 with as 12a?

Also, ant opinions on oil filters?

Your call on the date Crit, but if you make the decision soon it will help people plan and avoid confusion down the road. Yes I did notice the rad was gone, thanks, saved me bringing it in. Was that the mounting bracket you need (I didn't look around much for that, that's one I just stumbled on, but if it's not right I probably have the right one someplace).

Good luck with the car Greg!

Greg
Thats the best plug IMO. you can read all day on arguements back and fourth about the best. But for a stock 12A, NGK BR8EQ-14 is the way to go.

The exact same thing on filters to. I have a Mazda dealership right next to me and a Advanced across the street from that, so just for looks really, I like the Mazda Factory oil filter (its black and matches my engine bay color scheme lol) plus it says mazda and its smaller than the Fram, looks really good. I dont have anything orange in there so I stay away from the Fram. If you have a mazda dealership locally go there, if not anything will do, AND always do it at 3000 miles, even if you get the 5000 mile orange can of death lol.

hope this helps, lol

think I found the problem

I think I found the problem with my cold start. I spoke with my mechanic, John Grise, at Sutherlin Mazda out by the Great Mall of Georgia. He said to see if the choke was closing completely. Removed air filter housing, turn key to on position, pull choke **** out fully. Yep it was stuck! liberal amounts of WD-40 seems to have fixed the problem. Carb was rebuilt last summer so linkages were to dry.

This cold wet weather always brings out worst in these cars.

John’s cols start instructions:

1. Pull choke **** all the way out, do not pump gas.
2. Turn key, she should fire up and run at 3,000 to 3,500 rmp.
3. Push **** in to set fast idle Twix 2,000 to 2,500 (or whatever it takes to idle in gear)
4. Make sure you have the warm up air hose installed from exhaust manifold shield to air filter intake horn. Otherwise it may stall at the first stop light.

I guess I’ve been living in the south to long.

That would work great for me, since school and leaving early on Tuesday and what not.

lol, should've rephrased that last part Crit . I've waved to him a lot and once, he saw me sitting in a parking lot and just stopped and stared for a second. When I waved, he did back and just walked in Publix.

I hope its just your technique, because your car is 4x4 status compared to the EK (no offense, its just my car is Slammed).
I'll just have to flex my crazy slammed car maneuvers.

Oh and im def. down for a Saturday afternoon intervention.

** Edit **
If i get the rx7 started again i may drive it (just need to charge the battery tomorrow and fire it up when its more than 30 degrees...). But probably not, since I'm selling it. Its too much of a project for me. I will probably be picking up a base model 83 that needs a motor and trans (used to own it actually LoL) but has awesome body/interior, so the gsl has to go.

So is the meet hopefully still on for Tuesday?

Kali, I don't remember your name (sorry) but yeah... My car is not THAT high off the ground due to my tires. I took it at a mild angle...first my cat heat shield started to scrape, then I felt the whole car just grind and stop ( I was crawling) So I put it in reverse and backed out again. Besides, there's really not room for people to be pulling into Crit's driveway. We shall invade the culdesac!

P.S.-By-The-Way: There's a black GSL that was placed on the Norcross Pull-A-Part yard very recently. Brett and I were there today. When we got there, a group of guys were surrounding it so we went off to do other things until they left. Considering that they had the hood up when we left it, I'm pretty positive they sabotaged the hood release system so no one could pull the motor. The center vent valence piece on the hood was removed, the cable ripped out and well...yeah....we were unable to reopen the hood. The rear wheels are still there. Interior is there (Maroon leather seats!), sunroof is there, all glass is there. The car has only done about 98,000 miles. Go grab what you can!

Crit: I checked out the 'vert again. Motor is gone, as are all leftover valuable interior bits...the rear bumper and rear deck are also gone. The hubs you want are of course, still firmly attached. I'm not sure what you meant by Mazda knocked that nut back some. I didn't attempt to remove it because my tool set (and Brett's) would've just looked at us funny if we'd tried. Maybe if you and myself headed up there some time with a gigantic breaker bar and both stood on it???? lmao

Guys, I am probably not going to be able to make it Tuesday. If time permits I will come by, but right now it does not look like I can make it.

I rebuilt my carb Saturday and I have been running down niggling problems over the last couple of days. The car is revs freely and quickly to the buzzer. The idle is still not as smooth as it should be and I have it set higher than it should be to keep it running. But it seems to running much better today since I addressed a couple issues. So maybe tomorrow I will try turning the the idle down.

Hey, does anyone have the procedure for setting the idle mixture? I used to have some instructions, but I cannot find them at the moment.

Someone did that to a Mitsubishi Diamante I needed the manifold off of. I guess the guy wanted some engine part but didn't have the money? Well, long story short, sucks for him because I had the money Crow bar to the hood latch and viola.
