Chris said his heater isn't working and I get his point. I got reports on the internet that he had been seen in the Riverside area around 10 pm, so hopefully he made it home.

And congrats to Saxby Chamliss, he'll provide valued balance to the new senate. I wish I'd voted for him, I'd had a clean sweep.

Oh wow that is the last time I wear that shirt to a meet.

It was a pretty good turnout last night. I'm glad that I got Sabine there and back home without any problems other than an hour of traffic on the interstate due to a crushed accord. Sadly it was unlikely that anyone in that car was still alive as there was blood splattered all over the windshield as it appeared to me. Slow down, guys!

News for the month is that it has been discovered that the two Col(l)ins' are direct opposites of each other. Very amusing.

Today it's likely I'm pulling the injectors on Sabine so that I can prepare to send them off for repair. Once they're back, I may make one last ditch effort to avoid swapping the drivelines between cars by reinstalling them and going for a drive. It makes some sense to me that if the injectors are so horrible that they leak THAT badly...then they're obviously not flowing well enough to provide adequate fuel to make good power. Then again, the motor also churned out pretty sad compression numbers.

Chris, Sabine put on her sunday best for you and you forgot your camera! How dare the photographer!

Holly, I was loving the getup.

Tim, very intelligent purchase indeed. When gas prices go back up it'll be a lot like having your cake and eating it too.

Allen, beautiful GTU. It used to make me feel very sad because my red (now blue) FC was in such bad shape by comparison...but now that I have Sabine I feel a little bit better. Other than the paint, it's kind of like joining the club!

Andy, when do I get to drive your car? C'mon, just around the parking lot won't hurt!

Colin, start collecting the parts you need for the tranny swap. I can help on d-day.

Ray, I thought I had sent the PM but my connection timed out or some bullcrap I think. It didn't send, in short form. Tell Cathy I really enjoyed the coffee. I should look into seeing what Starbucks offers in similarity, but I don't think we do. Possibly Komodo Dragon but I doubt it.

To anyone not mentioned, I apologize...I was dead to the world last night. If I had stopped by Starbucks and gotten myself a triple venti straight eggnog latte with peppermint whip sprinkled with cinnamon and nutmeg....I would've been a bit more uppity and normal.

All in all, nice meet. Though I don't recommend anyone get the popcorn shrimp basket. It used to be good, but last night it was terrible. Chicken strips are where it's at...though Billy's Big Weiner was pretty impressive..

YESSSSSS I need the molded hose coming off the heater core to the oil cooler. Then I can work on finding something that'll cap the bypass that I have on there right now (for whatever reason). Also, you can see the missing black rubber piece in this pic.

Congratulations Billy. I didn't knw you guys ran a contest at your meets for those as well. I just thought Ray counted SA equivalents down there.

Ray, Tim's Lotus was parked in the row behind the cars, just down from mine. You should have seen it when you left. He has witnesses that it exist.

Chris, if I recall correctly, you DON'T want the molded heater core return that runs to the stock beehive, but rather the SE and Pre-83 version that runs around the firewall and straight into the rear iron. Tell me if I'm wrong.... You might find one cheap on eBay, or can just order from the dealer. It won't be bargain-basement cheap, but **** man, you'll have HEAT.

Yeah I guess it goes to the rear iron, I don't know where it's supposed to enter. Does the 13B even have the right inlet? I need to see an 83's setup.

Well, the SEs and Pre-83s are front-mount coil cooler cars. The 12As have coolant passages in the housings that circulate coolant through the manifold to heat the carb and combat icing. The SE, however, doesn't care about icing and those coolant passages were never machined at the factory, but the SE does use coolant to set the high-idle on the stock throttle body. This is done by taking coolant straight from the backside of the waterpump, snaking it along the top of the runners, and in the bottom of the throttle body. It then comes out and drops straight down onto the usually-rusty pipe sticking up from the top of the rear iron. As I recall, we just plumbed the two together, so your motor just circulates a little coolant from the water pump to the rear iron all the time.

As far as the heater coolant circuit goes, you've got two outlets from the radiator. The big hose below the radiator goes to feed the water pump to be circulated to the motor where it'll work its way to the rear iron, turn around and come back through the block again. The little tee in the radiator outlet diverts some of the post-radiator coolant, runs it around the engine compartment, and dumps it through the firewall for the heater core. Now you have pressurized coolant that needs to be returned to the block...

On the beehive cars, the coolant exists the heater core and heads to the beehive before returning to the rear iron on its way back to the water pump. On front-mount cars, the heater core outlet just runs around to below the oil filter, where it goes straight into the coolant bung just above the coolant sender.

As I recall, you've got a piece of hard pipe running up your firewall with a tee at the top, but I don't know why. I think that one end of the tee should be capped so it can only go into the heater core. Maybe Mazda had a bleeder there for the sake of burping the system, as I recall a previous car of mine that had one installed there as aftermarket, but you shouldn't have to sweat it. By the way, you should be looking for a charcoal canister to fix your lung butter / autocross oilslick problem


Moving on - Ray, how's the carb coming? Did you pick yourself up a little paint-can dunk tank?

Better yet Crit, I found a professional parts cleaner out in the shed, a heavy walled polypropylene drum with flutes on the inside to create lots of agitation and a heavy metal loop handle so that you can rotate it back and forth like a washing machine. Here's a photo:

Holds about a gallon of fluid, so I need to pick up some carb cleaner on my way home this afternoon. Really neat. I'll soak those progression circuits for a day or two then find a way to get a probe into the little buggers - man they are tiny, too small for a pipe cleaner, I think. Any ideas?

Then I'll put the whole thing back together on Saturday and see if it works.

Chris I have all the stock water hoses for the 84-85 models, if that will help. Here's a photo of the 84-85 heater hoses:

The one on the left coming off the T is the molded one that enters the top of the beehive. The other side of that T runs up to the lower radiator hose. The one on the right runs over to the driver's side of the engine where it T's into both the lower end of the beehive and the rear iron casing.

I also have the rubber strip. I can bring what you need into Atlanta on Friday if that will help. I just cringe every time I think about you driving around with a frosted up windshield.

Thanks for the 12A counts Holly! I hope to see Tim's new Lotus last time, I guess that stealth paint job made it hard to see.

Not a good idea to poke anything down those holes, too easy to scratch them and mess up the internal flow. Instead wash like your doing and then hit them with compressed air. If no compressed air get a can of aerosol carb cleaner and use the tube with the can and spray through all of the passages. I'm betting the soaking will get 99 percent of it all cleaned out anyway so doing these things may not even be needed.

Excellent, Ray. I'm glad you said that. It didn't occur to me that the tee that Chris Rowe has is so that coolant goes straight to the beehive without having to go through the heater core. In that case, he'll need to find a hardline from an SE that doesn't have a tee, or just keep his plug.

For the progression holes, I've always used the thin, heavy wire from a hang tag, like mechanics used to use to mark engines with "no oil", "do not start" - that kind of stuff.

Baaa... I hate it when the experts disagree. Thanks for the warning Tim, if I stick anything in there I'll be real careful. But yeah soaking and compressed air should do it, my main concern is a dark brown deposit that's coating the orifices and running down from that slotted one in the middle, I imagine this is the cause of my progression problem. Hopefully the solvent will get it, if not I'll try Crit's nickel wire trick. Thanks guys.

ok so I'll look around for an SE hardline. THEN get the molded hoses from there on out. So yeah now I just need the drivers front quarter rub strip and a charcoal canister.

So I'm probably about 50 pages and several months behind on this stuff.
But I bought another FC yesterday to hold off my withdrawals I've been having. It did not run upon pickup, but after about 15 minutes of underhood tweaking, and 5-10 minutes of towing it down the road with a 4 runner it finally started. Couldn't let it run for long since no alternator = no belt = no waterpump, but planning on putting that on today after work and crossing fingers for a running 88 SE by tonight.

Anybody got some 4x114.3 wheels for sale? I haaaaaaate phone dials hahaha.
Shooting to be at the meet in Jan.
