What I have been up to since my engine got popped on the dyno last year by a shop. The engine needs to be broken in and tuned to be truly ready for daily driving and WOT.

I am also looking for a working sunroof bracket/slider for fc.

But where abouts do you live? I would greatly appreciate it dude!

That isnt too far from lake asbury (near middleburg). Im new to this state.. -_-

Since when did I become a go to guy to fix peoples cars? lol. I will print off the TPS part of the FSM and let you now when I have time. Maybe we should just start a " Fix my broke ass RX-7" day. Somebody offer a place, we cook some food, chill and use our collective knowledge to help each other out. I had another Member ask me for help, I suggested this as well. To think 5 years ago I was begging for help. LOL

That's me! lol

I wouldn't mind hosting a little event at my place. I don't have too much room, but I've got a long driveway.

Although, before we even set a day, if we decide to do this, I need someone to just come by to see if I need any parts. Would be pointless to set it all up just to hit a wall because we need to replace something.

If someone is able to stop by sometime soon to help me tinker around and figure out what all we need, I'll take care of their meal and gas if necessary.

A buddy of mine, who was going to help me get it going, was going to do the ATF trick, but raksj04 sent me a link explaining why it's a bad idea. I'm glad I asked here first because the last thing I need to do is blow the seals out and need to break down the motor.

So who's got a little bit of time to help my poor GTUs get back on the road?

Thanks ahead of time!

Did the car have any motor problems before it sat?

ok...so the background...

A couple years ago, I stopped by my mom's house on the way home from an old job. When I left, it was dark, and for some reason my headlights wouldn't come on.

Obviously I couldn't drive home, so I just left it there. I think it was a Friday because I didn't feel the need to get it immediately the next day, so I left it there a few days.

When I went to start it again, it wouldn't start. It just churned. The starter was working hard, but it didn't take. I'm guess either spark or fuel.

I had just bought my mom's van from her to help her out, so I just drove that instead and stored my Mazda till I could find the time and help to get it going.

Well the thing with storing it is, you don't see it and "out of sight, out of mind"

I've been forced out of storage so now its in my driveway looking at me, waiting to get going again. With all of the horror stories of blowing out Apex seals, I don't want to take the risk of doing it myself...

...so here I am...

raksj04 11-27-12 09:28 AM

it may been flooded.

Flooded without pushing on the gas pedal?

Yep, it maybe caused by a leaky injector.

hmmm....well I think I have either new or rebuilt 550cc's I had put in when Norm swapped my carb set up with a TII intake mani and fuel injection.

I also had a pair of either new/rebuilt 720 cc's (I think) that I originally put in, but I couldn't get past 8500 rpms bc of the excess fuel....so we put in the 550's

Either way, I figured my injectors were in good enough condition to not cause any problems.....

...again, a good reason to have someone who knows more than me to take a look

junito1 11-27-12 05:32 PM

Damn no love for my 7? haha, ill come around eventually=D

@Matthys

1. Whats your full setup. s4 or s5 engine. 6 port n/a or 4 port turbo block. (turbo or n/a)?
2. With TurboII manifold? is this matchported to the 6port block?(if 6port)
3. Make sure you MAF,TPS,ECU are all either s4 or s5.
4. Inectors.. do they match ecu/harness? ALl have to be either s4 or s5 or using proper resistor box.
5. Please tell its not N/A with 550cc primaries...

Usually if TPS never gave you a problem before.. its unlikely it is now the problem.

Your need to make sure your parts work together.
Then you need to make sure you have compression.
after that you check for fuel and spark.

If those 3 are check and good to go. Put some atf in there try to start it.. IF no go, pull/push start that piece.

Matthys333 11-27-12 05:59 PM

It's been such a long time since I new the specs about my car...

1) I really don't remember if it's S4 or S5...it's a 1990 GTUs

2) It's a TII manifold match ported to the 6 port (I remember that bc I grinded the intake for so many hours)

3) All of these parts were suggested by my master RX-7 mechanic, Norm, when he did the swap, so I'm sure it is all matched up properly

4) This as well...

5) It is a N/A, full bridge-port, with 550's primary and secondaries (these were highly recommended by the mechanic who ported it before I bought it...by Norm who did the swap...and some people on this forum at that time.

I was told and read that the ATF trick isn't worth doing unless there's carbon block...which I'm not sure about.

I don't feel comfortable doing anything with my RX-7 till I have someone with me that knows what to do. I definitely don't need to blow out my seals...

AGreen 11-27-12 08:43 PM

Junito- you rock on wit yo bad self. That's pretty awesome. Sucks that it blew up. Where were you getting it dyno tuned? (So I won't go there lol)

Matthys333- So you have a TII intake manifold on an NA engine? Is there a turbocharger attached as well (in other words, and NA->T?) or is it still completely naturally aspirated with a TII manifold?

What ECU are you using? If it's the NA ECU, then the 550 cc primaries are too much probably. That may have been why it flooded. What you need to do first is drain the gas tank and put in some fresh fuel. Change the fuel filter too. Put some regular oil down the intake. I usually use an oil bottle with a nozzle on it (like a gear lube bottle, but with thinner oil) and attach a vacuum tube to the nozzle. Other end of the vacuum tube goes to a vacuum port on the intake manifold. Squeeze the bottle upside down. Squeeze enough until you're sure there's about an ounce or 2 in the engine now. Remove the EGI fuse under the hood. Crank the engine. Crank for about 10 seconds, then let the starter cool for about a minute. Repeat. You should hear the engine sound a little differently. At first, it was like "weeeeeeeee', but it should start making a definite pulsing noise, kind of like "na-na-na-na-na". That's the sound of compression coming back. Reinstall the EGI fuse, then start your car. Keep on the throttle, because it's probably going to die right away. It hasn't been run in a while, so expect weird things. You may need new spark plugs, but we'll figure that out later.

As stated previously...I have a match-ported TII manifold on my fully bridge-ported, naturally aspirated GTUs.

The bridge-porting was done before I bought the car, so I'm not sure was all was done. It also had a carb set up before I bought it.

After I got it, a master RX-7 mechanic gave me a list of parts I needed to swap the carb system to a FI system.

It would be impossible for me to know or remember what was all changed/upgraded in past years, but with professional RX-7 mechanics doing the upgrades, I'm confident that the correct upgrades were made. I drove it without any problems as a DD for about a year.

I remember being told that with my ported motor, I would be able to run 720cc injectors...which I did for a little while, but it started bogging around 9k rpms. So I dropped down to 550cc injectors to reach my 13k rpm limit.

Any questions about what parts I have or was upgraded to...or any suggestions on starting it would be better use if it's done in person, with help.

The FB group is trying to put together something for all the local "gurus" to come together for a BBQ and fix one RX-7 per month.....so I'm trying to make mine the first one.

So I'm just going to sit tight and wait till we set a day and time...and do it properly without a chance of making bigger problems for myself

FPR got here. Gonna be a fun Saturday!

raksj04 11-28-12 08:58 AM

My EBC came in as well, This will be a fun saturday.

Matthys what are you running for a Ecu?

MIDNFauciUSN 11-28-12 09:16 AM

Always loved the term "master" rotary mechanic...

raksj04 11-28-12 10:57 AM

My warm and cozy blanket came today!!!!! Well it is not for me, its for my turbo, I can't wait to install it.

I don't know man...If you can tell me how to check, I'll try to figure it out

He never proclaimed "master"...I just refer to Norm as that bc of how much he knew about rotaries. This man invented a new type of porting that hasn't been done before...He explained it to me when he did my carb to FI swap, but I can't remember how it was done.

I wish I knew how to reach him...he'd have my RX-7 going in minutes

Pass side foot well, pull the carpet back remove 4 nuts I think they are 10mm or 12mm, remove the metal kick plate, need the label. If it has a sticker on it that says rTek let us know.

MIDNFauciUSN 11-28-12 04:10 PM

Battery died again... WTF? must be a draw somewhere... both the battery and alt passed bench testing...

I had the same problem I just replaced my battery with a red top, I have had no problems since

I tried to install the turbo blanket, it wasn't as easy as I thought.

MIDNFauciUSN 11-28-12 05:34 PM

Gonna take the alternator to an alternator shop... I don't trust the bench at advance anymore.

I need to start a thread on this. Theres so many different causes, simultaneous battery relocate, standalone install, all on an s4 vert that has an s5 turbo engine in it. I know its one of a few things at this point:

1. The alternator is f*cked internally
2. The smaller gauge wiring to the alternator is f*cked up
3. A small draw in the electrical system. I'll have an answer on this in a minute.
