Fair warning

I think we should thank Robbies neighbor as we now have advanced warning that next time we need to be a bit more conservative. I like the runs as much as the next guy but being older and having survived this long I confess to having lately some issues with how spirited our driving has become on these runs. I've noticed that some of us (me included) have been known to cross yellow lines and exceed the speed limit by 2 or 3x. We are on borrowed time, one day one of us is going to slip up and end up with a crushed car or seriously hurt. That said I want to drive all out sometimes.

I used to run the college car club back in the day and we used to run monthly autocrosses in parking lots. Not SCCA or anything just our own autox with our own cones and some stop watches. It was a blast and really teaches how to handle you car at the limit in a very safe environment. Fast forward to today and now its hard to find a parking lot that will let you have an autox due to liability fears and insurance costs. And its not cheap. It used to be a walmart or kmart lot on Sunday was all you needed. Not anymore.

If someone can find a large ( like at least an acre in size parking lot ) that we can get permission to run on then we could "find" cones and use a stop watch and thats all you need. Run what you brung. If we need insurance then it's a whole 'nother ball game because then we would need an organized club to represent us to the carrier.

I also think some track days would be cool. I know a lot of the FD guys do track days on a regular basis. If we can hook up with an existing group that would be fun as well. Usually there folks there to help teach the basics. Even HPDE would be fun but doing it as an rx7 group mind you is the goal. If I wanted to do track days and HPDE stuff right now I can go but its no fun unless other 1st gens are out there. I know some of you are reading this so pipe up with ideas on tracks and how to organize something like this.

Ok, so we've been warned. The next meet we should a) choose a route away from the general area where Robbies neighbor lives; b) hold it down on speed; c)go where there's more curves and less straights, that will help keep the speed under control.

Oh, and SAM GET THE VIDEO POSTED!

As far as the speed goes, I wasn't paying attention to my speedo. I didn't feel we were flying though. Nobody passed on a double. the whole time we were running those back roads I stayed in 2nd or 3rd. I know I drive fast anyway so fast to me and fast to someone else is completely different. I hate that our group cought bad attention like that. The drive was cool though. Next time Charlotte motor speedway lol. plus doesn't the commercial go vroom vroom

I admit, I do speed a lot and cross the double yellow.

As far as a place to autocross, I will see if I can look around. My old workplace was pretty big... not autocross big, but I got him to let us host the Miata Club meet. Something like 60 cars showed up.

I took those photos

Stu that lot isn't too small, depends how many cars we get. If its the usual 8 or 10 cars then its big enough. Of course after the first one, the owner will probably find out he's liable for anything that happens and kick us off because his insurance carrier will either raise his rates or drop him.

So if you approach him about this make sure he knows that there will be cones and cars running around them screeching tires but not at high speed. That way he has all the info and can make the decision up front. If his neighbors complain that may be an issue as well, but it looks like its in an office complex. Are there any residential units close by?

Maybe if we can get 2 or 3 sites available we can rotate amongst them so we don't "wear" them out, so to speak.

Tokico Illuminas

Hey,

Any 1st gen people looking for some new shocks/struts? Billy has a great price on a set:

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?p=8092875

If someone wants just the rears, I'll go in on those with you as I could use the fronts.

I need to get down there for one of these meets My 7 is in the process of being torn apart for new suspension, brakes, and exhaust, though. Not sure when it will be ready, but I will make it down there one of these times.

The idea of doing some autox or a track day sounds fun. Might also be cool to hit a park and have a BBQ since the weather is getting to be nice.

Oh Kory, found some pictures of the horn install. I think I posted them before somewhere in the first gen section, but here they are again

Blue Arrow, pointing to the wire, I used as the ground. It was tan or brown I believe.
Red Arrow, Pointing to the purple wire, I used for the power.

These are the stock horns. Notice the Male tab on the horn? That is where the power goes to, from a female plug power wire. I used the stock wire, that way if I decide to go back to stock (why??) it would be simple unplug and bolt per horn.

I had to bend the mounting bracket 90*, so the horn won't point at the ground or hood. I do not have them pointing straight, I have the left horn angled straight and a little to the right, and the right horn straight but a little to the left.

That is what they look like mounted. See the ground tabs? I changed my mind at the last minute and grounded them where I bolted the mounting bracket to, so it is shorter and neater. I will let you see it next time we meet.
