Jeff,

I'm going to start posting my questions here.. Maybe others might be interested..

So, have you seen DCrosby's set up?
http://member.newsguy.com/~dncrosby/...arPC/CarPC.htm

I was looking at the VIA M12000 series board.. Do you know of any issues using this board vs. others??

I'm debating between if I should build it or get someone else to.
MP3car will cost me around 8-900 w/dvd drive and 100g HD.

Yup I have spoken with Dcrosby a few times and I really like his no frills system placement. I however am a little more conservative in placing the innards of the computer inside a secure case. I love his DIN treatment of the Xenarc and as I told you, I will be adopting something like that if the whole in-dash thing doesn't work out.

Via boards are the best in the carputer business.....

As far as build it yourself vs. pre-built....it is simply cost vs. convenience...
The biggest problem is when a pre-built fails, will you be confident enough in your skills to crack the case and replace a bad HD or other component;

I been pricing it out and its about 1500-2000 for a nice set up (if you have aftermarket amps and such). I prefer one of these vs. indash dvd player for 1k.

yeah, it makes more sense!!!!

so, i assume you can make the carputer drive all the speakers in the car including a subwoofer? can you hook it all up to a regular amplifier? man, this stuff just gets more and more complicated.

You could do it several different methods.. I think?? Jeff, correct me if I'm wrong..

I believe you could either convert the head set line to RCA and hook it up to your amp.

or use that same line to your head unit or FM channel converter and play it out of your existing head unit.

Other option is to get a sound card that have built in RCA outs or Optical out. I'm not much of a PC guy (MAC) and I'm starting to find more info. Then use those out to your amp.

Best would be 5.1 set up with each channel hooked up to the amp. I'm shooting for that.. since I have ton of amps at home that I don't use.. hehe..

I'm really excited about this stuff..

Hey Phil, have you done anything with this yet?

I am still patiently waiting for a reasonable dependable solution for a headunit. So still carry around a laptop.

I hav a carputer setup in my car now. I still have to get the touchscreen 'galssed into the dash and take care of a few bugs, but it's up and running.

I'm using:
HP E-PC-40 computer (1GHz, 256MB RAM, 40Gig HD)
T-View 7" touchscreen monitor
Creative Extigy external USB soundcard
1 4-channel amp for main speakers
1 2-channel amp for subs

I went with the E-PC because
A) It was only $110 shipped from ebay
B) Small, ready to go setup

I'm using the Extigy because
A) It allows 5.1 surround with a rotary volume ****
B) The internal sound card sucks! (Not enough signal to push the amps well)
C) It was only $50 from Creative for a refurbished unit with waranty

As I mentioned, I need to get a friend to glass the screen in for me. I also need to run wires underneath the carpet, swap the CD drive for a DVD drive or add a USB DVD drive to mount in the dash, and move teh CPU from behind my seat to the passenger side bin to keep it out of sight.

I'm not a pro by any means but if you have any questions I'll see if I can help!

Reese
