Just wanted to say hi. I've just moved to the Charleston, SC area from MD. Thought I'd introduce myself and see who else is in the area.

I've got a VR 93 Touring with a leaking radiator. Heh.

VR. Also, do you guys know of anywhere I can go to get custom brackets fabricated? Either aluminum or steel. OR if any of you are masters of the art of welding and bending and wouldn't mind a young padawan...

I'd like to repair my rad, but don't know if I can trust something as important as coolant to a repaired part. Any suggestions?

a repaired rad works just fine when done right. one of just a few experiences i've learned during my life here on this great rock we call earth. i have found out since doing that kind of work, mainly from that employer, with the cost now-a-days involved with replacement of the plastic tanks and gaskets on those aluminum rads, u can just replace it with a new one. with that said, if u have modded the engine for more power, u'd probably be better off getting an aftermarket rad cause we all know keeping these rotaries cool is #1, along with keeping oil in them. what kinda brackets u need?

I've got an SR Motorsports Alum rad right now. The problem is that even if I repair it, the current mounting location leaves much to be desired. I'm thinking about mounting it slightly differently and the stock mounts won't really work anymore.

What I'll probably need is some bent 1/8" steel plates about an inch wide and 4" long bent to secure the top to the original mounting points. I'll probably also be doing some aluminum shrouds for the intercooler and radiator once everything is fixed to better secure it for next time. If anyone has any means of accurately bending steel bars, please let me know. There's beer and pizza in it for you

What kind of repairs did you do. Mine isn't cracked at any of the seams, it's more of a dented crack along the veins. What do you recommend?

I'm contemplating replacing it with a Mazda Comp rad or the Koyo Triple pass. Money is a factor, but I'm also thinking long term. The SR rad was great until this happened. I'd rather replace it if further/future repairs may be necessary.

 

provided the rad u want to repair is the copper type, it can be repaired. i've had to do my own after contact with a wrench from 12v+. those tubes actually have a seam that is soldered together. but alot of times trying to repair a small area creates a larger one because the heat spreads rapidly thru the copper. not being able to test a repair is my biggest problem. when i did mine, i took it to the shop i used to work at to get it tested. as for the brackets u need, it would actually be sheet metal. i think what i used for my rad was 1/8. but no bending was involved to mount my e-fan to it, just drilling holes and bolting together. without a sheet metal press, u pretty much left bending the stuff with a hammer vice. kinda crude but effective and can still turn out nice if u take ur time. i've had to come up with all kind of different ways of doing things not having the right tools to do something or a shop to work out of.

It's all aluminum, unfortunately. I just took it to a radiator shop and they pretty much told me that it's toast. I'll post some pictures up of the dmg.

The beautiful thing is that I don't think it was ever sitting in it's mounting bracket and that it's been resting on my AC condenser which looks to be FUBAR'd pretty good as well.

Time to go parts hunting... :\

 

i have a buddy with a basically new (<300 miles) koyo-n-flow that he needs to get rid of. only reason he is selling is because he just had Griffin make him a custom v-mount.

 

Is it the triple pass? And if it is, how much is he selling it for?
