GT Live/MazdaDays 07 at VIR
I posted about this over on the Mazda Owners of America website, but I'm spreading the word here as well. Instead of typing it all over again, I'm going to just copy and paste it haha. Take note of the discount code: 'WIBOB'.
I'm posting up another topic in the NE section so that those guys won't miss out (since it's in VA).

We had a blast last year hanging out with the MazdaSport guys, chatting with the Speedsource guys, not riding the SIM race (because it was slow due to the rain), watching the Grand-Am Cup race (now called the Koni Challenge), and being completely frozen haha.
This year in addition to all of the events they had last year (sim race, drift show, bike show, car show, fan festivals, koni challenge, lap battle, girls), they are also offering for the first time the Drift Challenge where we can ride along with pro drifters. It's similar to the SIM race, except it's drifting instead of lapping the track in really really fast cars. It should be great. A number of us from NC will be participating in the lap battle this year. Theme: 'Operatoin beat Jonny' haha. Jonny was the guy from VA with the White TII RX-7 who spanked up on the competition in the lap battle last year. He did that on a wet track, which means he will be even faster this year (provided it's dry).
MazdaDays is returning again this year. The NC Rotaries car club (formally known as the rrdi ... we realized that over half of our members were not Raleigh residents which resulted in a name change) is preparing to make this the best Mazda meet on the east cost. To do that we need LOTS AND LOTS of Mazda cars to show up. There is a possibility that Mazda USA will provide some things for us. I'll keep you posted on that.
Also, this year we have discounts! You can use the promo code 'WIBOB' when buying your tickets to get you $5 off a weekend pass, or $2 off a one day pass. Motorsports at a discount... mmmm mmmm good. The code is multi use, so feel free to distribute it as you wish.
I'm slowly making my way around to the different forums I'm registered at and posting information about it. I'll point them to this thread (free advertisement for mazooa and GT Live at the same time ). If any of you guys could help me out and post on your respective boards, that would be great! Direct them here too so we can get some kind of singular point of Mazda hot going on. So far, I've got the rx8club.com, rx7club.com, and rx8web.com covered (can you tell I'm a rotary owner hahaha).
Yes, clickable.

Bump. This was a major fun event last year with an awesome 6 hour race among other things. Oh yeah,, and a couple of really cute girls who would smile for the camera and pose with you.

Fan festival registration is open now. The festival registration doesn't cost anything (but tickets to the event do). Go to the link at the bottom, fill in your info, and select MazdaDays in the dropdown menu.

I did a quickie for you, NY, NY to Alton, VA (city where VIR is located)
Total Est. Time: 8 hours, 9 minutes
Total Est. Distance: 463.38 miles
For what it's worth, i'm driving up from Jacksonville, FL. went last year and had a blast (it was raining all weekend, so watching the endurance races and time trials was deff fun)

Mazda Days is returning to GT LIVE at Virginia International Raceway October 6th and 7th 2007.
The NC Rotaries car club is preparing to make this the best Mazda meet on the east cost. To do that we need LOTS AND LOTS of Mazda cars to show up. We will have a parking area in the paddock to show our cars again this year and we hope to have a huge turnout! Follow this link for registration, fill out the form and choose Mazda Days to have a parking pass waiting for you at the VIR gates. Also, this year we have discounts! You can use the promo code 'WIBOB' when buying your tickets online to get you $5 off a weekend pass, or $2 off a one day pass. Motorsports at a discount... mmmm mmmm good. The code is multi use, so feel free to distribute it as you wish.
GT LIVE has a blockbuster content lineup planned. Grand Am will be back with hot sports car racing during two six hour endurance races and this year you'll be able to see Tarzan Yamada take the wheel of an ICY/Phoenix Racing Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec.B to battle it out with the US boys. Redline Time Attack will make its debut at VIR and we anticipate a huge car count. On the drift side, the Falken Tire Drift team will do pro demos and give rides and US Drift will thrill us with another competition. Our Rally-X will expand a bit thanks to some support from Subaru and the XDL US Stunt Riding Championship returns. As always, there are tons of ways to get involved in GT LIVE, starting with go karts, rides in the GT Sim Race, the aforementioned drift rides, lap time in your own car in Tarzan's Lap Battle and last but not least, one of our many meets.

Anyone else? I sure would hate for the Honda owners to have more cars show up!
Seriously, this is one hell of a event. 6 hour Grand Am series races each day. Drift events with rides. GT Sim car rides. Rally X, pro bike riders.... the GT LIVE girls doing a photo shoot with us.

Plus there's a track event I can actually afford to do... and instruction (well, driving tips) from Mr. Yamada (maybe I can get him to ride with me if only because I speak Japanese...haha).

As of yesterday there were 5 RX-8s, 2 MX-5s and 1 Mazda 6 entered in the 6 hour Grand Am KONI race on Saturday! We've also received an email from Sylvain Tremblay, owner/driver for SPEEDSOURCE RACING saying for us to give them a time and as long as it works with their schedule...they will head over, possibly bringing one of the ST cars, for an autograph session!!!

I just realized that the Tarzan Lap Battle was on the Patriot course, which looks kind of wimpy, IMO... it has some nice elevation changes, but it looks like an oversized kart track.

Tarzan driving the course last year at GT live in one of the competitors cars.

Well, I'm a little disappointed, but I'll probably do it anyway, and I'll probably enjoy it (especially with my new bucket seat...). Assuming I have the gas money to go...
I was hoping to be able to put my wheels on some rumble strips though...heh
(oh wait, there are rumble strips... just not the pretty kind)

I can't make it up on saturday, but possibly Sunday. I have highly coveted tickets to the World Beer Festival on Saturday. Of course I will likely be nursing a hangover. Is anyone going up Sunday ?

I just happened to catch some coverage on the Miller event on Redline TV (don't normally watch it though...).
It looks like even more fun than I thought.
Plus, BFG lets you try their tires on your car for free?!?!?! Perhaps that means I don't have to burn up my own.
But if I'm gonna do a track event, I need to buy a helmet...

OG Racing in Virginia will rent you a full face helmet for 10 days for $35. Call week prior to event and they will email a contract which must be signed and sent back, then they will ship the helmet. I think they will deliver to the track or you can have it mailed for a little extra. Their number is 1-800-934-9112.

I'm going to go ahead and buy one... I want one for autocross and eventually karting/biking anyway.
Where are you guys staying overnight? Or are you local?
I'm probably going to take a tent and camp for the first time in literally about 6 years (I'm way too cheap to get a room).
I guess I'm gonna have to do at least two days, since the Saturday TLB group is closed...

Well, that was fun. I just got back at around 9:30 my time, and I left at around 12...
The guy is giving me a refund for the Lap Battle seeing as how I only got three laps (compared to some people who got four), due to some idiot spinning out in the first lap and taking like 20 minutes to get towed off course...
On the other hand, the karting was literally two or three times as much fun as the crap at Andrettis... not only were the karts in better condition, they also head adjustable seats, hydraulic brakes (WTF is up with andretti's karts having kiddy kart wire brakes?), and much better tires, but the course itself is a legitimate kart track, not something they stuck inside of an old warehouse.
If I had any complain about the whole event was the really bad handling of timing... they were far too concerned with ending every event at the exactly scheduled time (or before it), which ruined damn near everything you could do that you had to wait in line for.
For one, only about 20 people actually got to do the sim race during the 40 minutes or so they actually ran it, and the drift rides were nearly as bad (about half the line got cut off each session). And I could have got a third karting session in had the guys running the track not arbitrarily decided to cut the line for the last run group 15 minutes before the free rides were scheduled to end...
Also, Tarzan's name is definitely appropriate, as he is one elusive motherfudger (although perhaps Ninja would be more appropriate...). He didn't show up at, well, any event that didn't involve him driving something (that I know of), and even then he never stuck around longer than it took to get on a golf kart and bug the hell out back to his RV.
Then again, I'd probably do the same thing if I was in his situation... haha
I also find it ironic that a fixed-back bucket seat with inch-thick padding is more comfortable on a 9-hour drive than the stock FC seat.
