Blue Ridge Parkway - Oct 24 - 25

Tray, could you post a map of the route you plan to take from the Cracker Barrel up to Smokemount? I'm not sure if it is U.S.19 or what. I'm just trying to see if there is a closer point to meet up with you guys on Saturday morning.

- Leave out of Cracker Barrel (Ingle...) on Tunnel Road towards downtown Asheville (through the tunnel!).
- At the light after the tunnel (at bottom of hill), run right onto Town Mountain Road.
- Follow Town Mtn Road to the end (residential road, i'll be setting the pace!)
- At the end, turn right onto the Blue Ridge Parkway - South bound.
- Continue on parkway until you reach the end in Cherokee.
The camp ground is the same one you and I went to last year and reserved the group site.
I'm not meaning to sound like a smart *** with this post, but plan is to take a good bit of the day to get from breakfast to camping on Saturday so I guess you may want to meet us on the parkway. I can't really give you a time we will be where along the parkway. But the accesses to the parkway we will pass are (in order from our starting point...):
- Town Mountain Road - "north" of asheville (we start here)
- US 70 - east Asheville
- US 25 - South Asheville
- NC 191 - South-West Asheville (exit 33 off i-26 for this one)
- NC 151 - west asheville
- US 276 - from brevard
- US 215 - west of brevard on US 64 - near Rosman
- US 23/70 - Balsam Gap - west of Waynesville
- US 19 - from Maggie Valley (one side)/Cherokee (other side)
if you remember the meet of the GA people (the one with the gravel road!) you weren't too far from US 215. (and US 64 to get to Brevard, NC). But we probably wont be to that area until the afternoon... I was thinking that we would probably head down 276 into brevard for lunch around 1pm (if i can time things right!)
What you might want to do is get on the parkway at NC 191 (Brevard Road - Exit 33 off I-26...) and we can meet you at the over look "right there" This would save you from driving across town and driving the "commuter stretch" of the parkway through Asheville...
Or you and I can decide that I'll meet you at a particular point at a particular time and I'll get Jamin and Toby to lead/set the pace so I can meet up with you and then get back with everyone else.
Call me tonight (after 9) or tomorrow and we'll figure this out.

Tray, I think Jeremy and I will be driving up on Saturday morning and meet up with you guys around 10AM at this exit
- NC 191 - South-West Asheville (exit 33 off i-26 for this one)
Does that fit within your schedule? Or should we meet at that spot a little later? 10:30 or so?

This is from page 1, the 1st post:
Cliff Notes:
- When: Oct 24th - Oct 25th, 2009
- What: Driving the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville to Cherokee
- Where: Friday night: Asheville, Saturday night: Smokemont campground/Cherokee.
Ok, I'll finally make a thread, with right about 4 weeks lead time.
Again, I'll be doing my annual run on the Blue Ridge Parkway, from Asheville, NC to Cherokee, NC (approx 90 miles).
The idea is to start off Saturday morning, catch a bite to eat in Asheville and then start the cruise about 9 - 10 am. Stop along the way for pictures and stretch our legs.
I'm planning to camp out in the Smokemont Campground in the Smokey Mountain National Park on Saturday night. Last year I reserved a group site for up to 20 people, but since I don't remember how much lead time I need to do that, nor do I have the time to get out there to do it (can't reserve group sites online), I'm not getting the group site again. You will need to reserve your own camp site for Oct 24th!!! Probably in Loop B. It is $20 a night.. I have reserved site B023 for myself and up to 3 others. Site allow up to 2 cars and 6 people.
If you want a hotel, that will be up to you to find one in Cherokee.
Lodging Friday night in Asheville will be up to you. I can provide a place to sleep for a few people, LET ME KNOW!!! these will be First come-first serve. And I'm not completely sure how many I can support. And I can't promise a bed or couch, just a free roof over your head for Friday night at either my house or my parents. (they are cool with it... those who came last year know...)
I am talking with Kevin (ZGN) about setting up a live feed for this event.

Holly, 10:30 - 10:45 will be best. I did the trip the other night and it took just about 30 mins to get from Cracker Barrel to the spot I told you. And like I said, I can break off from the group to come get you and bring you back to everyone.
jacoolv6, would love to see your car again! Bring some of the other J-ville people with you. Breakfast about 8 am, start driving about 10 am...

UPDATE!!! - 10 / 21 / 2009
Due to closures on the parkway, we will make a slight detour. We will meet up with some people around NC 191 and then take that exit off the parkway (in west asheville area) and make our way to NC 151 to get back on the parkway.
as listed per http://www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm
8 miles south of the 191 access to the parkway, the road is closed. Nice concrete barriers and everything. But the road re-opens 4 miles north of the NC 151 access to the parkway, 5 or 6 miles total i believe. The detour is considerably shorter than if we had to make our way to 276 and we miss only about 16 miles of the parkway. Some of the people on here know 151 well...

Due to heavy rains, engineers determined that a high risk of slides existed in the area, necessitating this emergency closure. The closure will be in place until further notice. Pisgah Inn remains open and accessible from US Highway 276 at Wagon Road Gap.

Whose coming from Charlotte?
I was thinking of heading west on 73 and taking 321 to 40 and over to
Asheville. Probably leave around 5:45 a.m. to get to breakfast at 8.
Let me know if anyone wants to caravan up with me. I can adjust my
time to meet up with folks if needed. I know a bunch from S.C. are
heading up but I'm not sure what they're route will be.
