I once got a ticket for loud exhaust but the cop did not mention anything about my exhaust being illegal. i had a 3" straight from the turbo to a arospeed muffler... I just had a magnaflow resonator installed to lower the noise, and went to court with the receipt..judge said it was all good like that. Thus i know an aftermarket exhaust is not illegal, it just cannot be too loud.

So what your trying to say is that is legal to sell , distribute , purchase and for the muffler shop to install any aftermarket exhaust but it is not legal to drive the car with it on. That seems like a lot of bullcrap to me.

Hey guys thought I would drop my .02 on this one. I used to drive an FD and a Z28, I once had a cop turn his lights on and start to pull out when I came off a stopsign in my Z, as soon as I got off the gas he shut off the lights, for the hell of it, I turned around and went back to talk to him, as I had been getting bugged alot at the time for my tint and exhaust. Come to find out he was going to stop me but when I got off it he relized it wasn't that loud and changed his mind. That was in Tampa, here in gainesville I hear of people getting tickets more for tint than exhaust. Both the FD and Z are gone, 1 ticket to close to losing my licencse.
The FD had a high flow cat and a N1 system on it and yeah was pretty loud, the Z had 3 inch pipe from the cat's back both cats were gutted, if it has to have a cat go with the high flow, or Get a stock one and Gut it. cut the top open and get that **** out, close it back up and weld it up. or just stick a torch in it just don't burn thru the outside. the only time I had a cop look it was just to see if the cat was there, he gave me a bunch of **** about it being loud, but he only gave me a warning. Your best bet is to be polite, honest and respectful if you get stopped. You'd be amazed where that gets you. What ever you do, DON'T LAUGH in his face when he tells you he thought you were trying to run from him @90mph in your modded FD. FYI that didn't go over too well.
Also in tampa only a few of the cops carried light meters, and most of them didn't keep them calibrated, at the time they had to be calibrated every 2 weeks or so. here in alachua county it seems all of them carry them, as my wife got a tint ticket a month ago in her truck.

The part of florida that I used to live in (Destin, in the panhandle) had no emissions inspection, no safety inspection other then windshield wipers and a working wiper fluid tank.
I ran a non-catalyzed RB 3 inch turbo back, but its pretty quiet. I never had any problem with the police, but then I knew most of them from working as a bouncer.

I dunno what the deal is with you and cops but down here in miami, every other honda driver has that high pitched screaming exhaust the got from a local muffler shop and rarely do i ever see many of them pulled over(with the exception of speeding etc.) If that was the case, most all the muffler shops in the area would be out of business. They even advertise welding exhaust systems including straight pipe all the way through in our local bargain traders. I personally have never been stopped for a loud exhaust or flame. I even used to own an eagle talon with an exhaust louder then all hell and was never stopped. I think your problems have to be somewhere along the lines of wheater or not you drive a "red" car. Being that our cars are outta the ordinary, many people like cops notices it right away and feel the need to mess with you. My suggesstion, **** them.

I installed Magnaflow Center mufflers as well as dual Magnaflow mufflers out back.. they are quiet enough but are good enough performance with minimal restriction. A loud pipe doesn't necessarily make your car go faster.. just make it noisier.
It's nice to see a Sleeper pass you by like the ones that have a Racing Beat system in it because they are quiet but effective.
