I'm curious what you guys think about using this product vs doing a vmount.
My street FD currently has a FMIC setup, the air temps have always been fine. The water not so good on canyon runs and track events when the temperature outside is over 90F.
Do you think this will help me keep better temps with the FMIC and not doing a vmount?

This should help quite a bit however, with a front-mount intercooler I would also recommend (if you don't have them already) adding dual oil coolers to take some of the load off of the cooling system and taking advantage of the open frontal area for the oil cooler ducts if unused.
I can't promise that this will solve your problems 100%, but it should immensely help if not fix it.

Alright everyone, we're gearing up to begin shipping the SBG Competition EWP kits. They're finally finished and back form anodizing and one last trip to the machine shop for the finishing touches.
We'll be closing the group buy shortly so for anyone still on the fence or seeing this late, this is last call

Do you have install instructions?
Also operation/wiring of the EWP.
Would it be possible to control it from a standalone instead of the included controller?
Also to clarify, any pictures or more information on the "standard" vs. "new LCD digital controller? (+$95)"
Shouldn't be but, also any affect on heater core?

-Pull your waterpump, airpump, belt and thermostat
-Install SBG flow plate in place of waterpump, and install replacement belt
-Install EWP and sensor in lines provided (or modify your OEM lines to suit)
-Connect your control module wiring to pump, sensor, power and ground, and run the harness. Connect to fan control circuit if desired (recommended)
-Fill with fluid and bleed system
Wiring of the EWP: Give the control harness power, ground, and 12v ignition. Plug in sensor, pump, and connect to fan control circuit if desired (recommended). Function: Set max temp of the control module. The module with automatically pulse at startup in intervals to allow motor to come up to temp, and will automatically increase speed as the temperature approaches the maximum temp set point (if the coolant temp approaches the maximum set point and temps are still increasing the controller will trigger the fans to turn on).
Would it be possible to control with a standalone? Possibly but it would void the warranty, and you'd have to figure out how.
The new LCD controller runs the same harness as the standard controller, however it's got a more sophisticated display versus the standard one with led display. It's also got an audible buzzer that the standard controller doesn't have.
Heater core: Your coolant may run slightly cooler as the pump speed is varied to control thermostatic functions instead of the manual thermostat... that said there's plenty of heat coming off of the 13b, you can still roast your legs if you want

Question about the temp sensor that is supplied. Do you know if it is the same as any aftermarket or oem replacement temp sensor? I believe its threads are 1/4" BSPT. If we are unable, or dont want to use the supplied inline adapter piece, finding a bung or adapter in that size is difficult at best in the US. So just curious if a normal coolant temp sensor can be used with the controller.

They'll be in early next week. The Davies Craig sensor is reliable but the threading is annoying....our brass adapter fixes this issue though. We also include the plastic inline adapter for anyone too lazy to pull their waterpump housing

Depends what there's an issue with, but we'll probably just send new parts and sort the rest out on our end. Those that have worked with us before are aware of our dedicated support for customers, even years in the future. We just send a new (replacement ballast) for a guy that had a HID ballast go bad from 4 years back, free. We take care of our customers... though if you've never worked with us before you wouldn't know that. Anyone that has, please feel free to vouch for us

They are, however the warmup time is slightly longer without a thermostat. We provide a full plug and play harness with the kit as well.

What is the expected Fulfillment date? I got in on the group buy in march. Just curious when to expect the kit.
Also, I can vouch for SBG customer service. Had a minor issue with one of my orders and they cleared the issue very quickly.
Great Vendor!

We've been waiting for these little brass tidbits quite some time which has held up shipping the kits... but they're finally here. These allow the new thermistor to be inserted in place of the old FD thermosensor (should you choose) for a cleaner install… though we do include the “lazy” way as well which is an inline adapter fitting in case you just want to get-er-done. Like always, we're late on shipping... I guess that's a SBG tradition now. On the flip side we're confident that you'll be quite pleased with the full setup
For fun (and to address the skeptics that are afraid this system is not up to the task of cooling the FD) here's is a picture to illustrate how much coolant this pump can flow at max speed. (Max speeds only happens when the pump speed has already ramped up approaching the temp set point, the fans have been triggered, and temps are still climbing). As a last resort the pump goes full BeastMode, with enough coolant flowing through the motor to SUCK THE STRAIGHT SECTION of the upper radiator hose FLAT! :insert innuendo here: I'd love to see a stock pump do this (and without cavitation, as verified in testing)... another check in the ‘totally-awesome’ category for this cooling setup . (don’t be alarmed, your hose won't actually get sucked flat, as this would result in a full overheating temp spike… included in our kit is an important provision to prevent a collapsed hose )

p.s. As a bit of a funny anecdote (and to explain why there’s actually a false sense of security with the stock mechanical setup being “fail-safe” ): No less than one week ago, we picked up a Turbo Mazdaspeed Miata (one of the new development platforms for us) which was flawless inside and out - thank you lady owner – but the hood was never opened. It was on original belts and had a very nice little front crank leak, so not only were the belts loose, they were oily and squealing as well. Everything under the hood just needed maintenance, as nothing was ever done aside from oil changes that I can tell… but no matter, it was only 20 minutes back to the shop so we’d just sort it out there. No less than 3 miles away I smell a faint burning rubber and snap, charge light is on and we immediately pull over. No less than 3 seconds after the belt snaps the OEM temp gauge needle is pegged FULL hot. AAA the car back, and replace the belt, everything seems ok, but had we left the motor running longer all bets would have been off… I was amazed how fast the needle hit full hot. Let that be a lesson to everyone out there… you’ve got literally SECONDS to catch a snapped mechanical belt, let alone a slipping waterpump belt in your FD. The Miata motor is somewhat bullet proof, I wouldn’t dare try this in an FD. Suffice to say, the stock mechanical waterpump is NOT fail safe, by any means whatsoever. I had this happen a number of years ago in an FD and lost a coolant seal as a result. Anyway it was ironic that this just happened days before shipping our EWP kits

Boxes are packed, everyone that placed an order should be receiving their kits within the next few days to a week depending on your location. Thanks for your patience... we've got around 30 kits going out! Cant wait to see some installed pics and reviews.

It would be nice if the Controller manufacturer created an I-phone application to interface with and operate the Davies Kraig digital controller. Lord knows we have plenty of gadgets and touch screens in the car already if you have many aftermarket mods at all. Would be nice to integrate things and keep the interior clean.

We're still in the revision process; we've tested a couple of designs and are waiting for a piece to be returned from our machine shop. Adding provisions for an idler pulley has been a bit more complicated than we were expecting, and there's a lot more in the way of custom hoses, brackets, etc. needed.
