Talking Tranny for hardcore drag and street use

Hello,
I am currently wanting a 10 second street car built, can you blame me?I am sick and tired of people dissing on my RX7 an its people that have cars with bolt-ons that aint even fast. And they diss on it because it aint currently running or they see how small the engine is,but whatever.I have been lately talking to some Puerto Rican brothers, that are amazing at what they do with there Rx7's, I am also sick and tired of shops just wanting to sell parts to me that I feel I dont even need and wont get me to my goal.I just think they do this to sell more and more for there vendors and forget about what they actually are in business for.Anyways, its time that "El Cuerno de Chivo" wakes up from its sleep.I need to know what tranny would best be for drag racing and needs to be streetable.I have heard of Doug Nash,Jericho, and what the heck is a Powerglide Tranny.I also aint no millionaire so please inform me on what tranny would be best for Drag and driving to the park, to the store and back home.Alright God Bless

Capo...Funny that you ask this question since there is so much nonsense on this web nowadays about transmissions.
From what I read you said 10 second and Street car.
First off all the automatics are consistent but the stalls will bever get you out the hole like a manual. Jerico, doug-nash, G-force and lencos are expensive and not reliably streetable.

93 or even TII transmissions will hold up well.
West racing got down to the 8.80's in their RX3 years ago with a TII tranny.
"El PA" racing datsun from PR runs 9.0 all day with a TII tranny ..OH and dont forget he runs 28x11.5 tires periferal and 300 of nitrous..

The key is a good working pressure plate, a well balanced drive-shaft and shifting skills.

I personally run a 1979 transmision with a 2nd gen shaft. i have not broken one with 175HP on a plate and 26x8.5 tires....

Again!

I agree on what your saying. Building a 10 second RX7, the engine isn't the problem, thats the easy part. Solving the rear, and then the tranny is the problem. I've been asking this question for years now and know one can give me a real answer. My buddy turbotommy just destroyed his tranny from that 20B!!!
He is in the same problem. Even though there are cars (like rx7.com) running 9s with stock rear and stock tranny, its only a matter of when will it break next. Yeah you can dish out $8000 for a dogtooth or $4000 for a drag auto, but there has to be a solution. I have about 450hp and it takes it but it doesn't like it. Sometimes locking up and thats if you pull off a good shift. DAMN third gear!. I don't see why you can't put a T-56 tremec in it. I mean they put it in vipers. Although I heard something about gearing. Or,...a supra, maybe too wide? Hopefully someone can give me a solid answer.
And about what you said, rotary RX7s can be NASTY. Just don't slow it down with those LS1s. Theres not too much that can beat a 450 Rx7 on the street. I think it crazy when your eatin most street bikes up.

Bro this is a waist of $$$..
If you want to drag this car this is the qrong gearing ..
Why would you want to go from 2.015 to a 1.72 2nd gear..that is the most important gear to really get out the hole..

FD3S/FC3S
First Gear: 2.578 (OEM 3.483)
Second Gear: 1.72 (OEM 2.015)
Third Gear: 1.289 (OEM 1.391)
Fourth Gear: 1.000 (4th OEM 1.000)
Fifth Gear: 0.821 (5th OEM 0.806)

First gear becomes useless in a stock tranny, especially with mucho power. Multiplies the torque too much and is too short.

I'm not a drag racer, but I thought 1st gear was the most important to get out of the whole. Isn't that waht gets the car moving?
By making the first gear taller, you are carring more speed when you need to go into second, hence the taller gear.

Never looked at the OS Giken setup before but the ratios seem good. Problem with the set though is that it uses the stock case. Doesn't say whether or not the stcok shafts are retained either. If they are, that is also a weak link.

Blue is stock and green is OS Giken. Looks like some nice ratios to me.

There are other options out there too.
Guru, PPG (ErnieT), T-56, and soon the Supras 6-speed Getrag are a few of them. Check out this thread.

Just stick with a stock tranny. You want something streetable, use a stock TII tranny (this is assuming you are wanting to build your 88 GXL since you did't specify). You will keep a 100% streetable car, and still be able to run 10s with it holding together with no problem with the right suspension setup. All internal gears will do is complicate things, and/or make a bunch of noise...not to mention waste lots of money like you don't want to do. Talk to Chris or Ari from Rotary Performance (rx7.com), and tell them what your goal is, they won't sell you "un-needed" parts if that's what you are wanting. There are many 10 second cars that have been built using their expertise, and in todays market, it's not that hard to build a perfectly streetable 10 sec car. Hope this helps....

I'm gonna be running a turbo 2 trans with either a Clutch Masters twin disc or a Mcleod twin disc setup with like a 12 by 28 tire, you just gotta start going to the track and see what people are running similar to what you have for a setup, start asking questions asking around, lookin and seeing how ***** gonna work together and you should be good. That stock tranny holds alot, people in PR have gotten in the 8's with turbo 2 and b2600 trannys, so if you want 10's and your not scared to learn how to shift then your good.
