RX3 runs 8.92 ona small tyre
On the 1st of feb, Dalton Automotive's RX3 ran 8.92 at 149mph. With a new coil rear end and GForce tranny on it's first pass off the trailor, and looks surely to go quicker. They are claiming it's untubbed, although it runs a 28x9 inch.
What are your guys thoughts on what can fit under these cars? Many are arguing that 26 inch is the maxiumum, and I tend to agree with them. Eveyone else here runs a 26 inch tyre.
I congrat them on the time though, it's still a bloody good achievement.

there is not a class as such for untubbed rotaries, rather it is the "title" of having the fastest untubbed. It is used strongly in advertising by the workshops.
It is a sort of knee-jerk reaction to the sudden proliferation in Australia of tubbed cars claiming to be street legal and the related running cost blowout.
The Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA), who sanction competition drag racing in this country are mainly interested in the sportsman type classes and up, not the little nuances between untubbed, minitubbed, 2 rotor, 3 rotor, stripped, street... etc. Indeed, only just recently did they even accept for trial purposes a class for "small cars" (we dont call 'em imports, as some were made locally) that allowed EFI!
General consensus is that an rx3 is really only capable of fitting on a 26x8.5. Rx4's and late rx7's can fit more, but have the additional weight penalty to bear. (not a class weight break, but they arejust heavier cars!)

4 port 13bt apparently.
specs and details below were lifted off the website;
"Back in the late eighties, this car with Wayne Dyson at the wheel made history in Australian rotary drag-racing with the first 9 second E.T with a 9.7 at 145mph. The current owner, Paul Pfeiffer has left the cars exterior the same and concentrated on the more important things such as POWER!, and this car has no shortage of that! Being a kind of "test bed" until his half-chassis series2 RX7 is ready, Paul is keen to make this untubbed RX3 go faster then it has ever gone before, a "Turbo ported" and dowelled S4 engine with custom intake and exhaust manifolds, 800hp Garret turbo, PSR Wastegate, Microtech EFI and custom intercooler will be a good start with over 400 kw's at the wheels. Gearbox is a highly modified 4 speed "Toploader Liberty" with a vertical gate shifter and the diff is from a Nissan Urvan! Testing at Heathcote Raceway in Victoria has produced a 10.0 at over 130mph with big traction problems, and on a fully prepped track these numbers will fall dramatically.
UPDATE! On Friday 19th October 2001, at a Calder-Park Street-Meet, With Chris Dalton at the wheel this car backed up it's quickest in Australia crown with an incredible 9.18@151.4mph. Look out for this car at the 2001 Shoot-out at Heathcote-Park on November the 3rd! Video to come soon!
UPDATE! On Friday 30th November 2001, at another Calder-Park StreetMeet, Paul's RX3 went 9.16@149.72mph. The first 2 passes had to be aborted due to wheelspin, with a couple of ladder-bar adjustments this was tamed down.
UPDATE! On Friday the 1st of Feb 2002, at Calder-Park, this car didn't disappoint, with a Gforce clutchless 5 speed gearbox, new coilover rearend setup and another Nissan Urvan diff....you read right, an URVAN DIFF!! it has rewritten the Australian rotary record books with an awesome 8.92 at a less than best 149.10mph! The meeting was rained out so only the one "off the trailer" pass was made. Quickest untubbed yet again! Worlds Fastest record insight!"

Didn't the rx-3's of Nibo and Papote from PR ran in the 8.60's or 8.70's? I know both cars were also not back half cars and it was believed that when Nibo crashed his car he was on a low 8 second run!
