i don't think it's a dual oil cooler, I think it's just an upgrade for the passenger side. It's pretty big though, more than 2.25 times bigger than stock. I'm curious as to how these function too, does anyone on the forum have these? Chuck?

its a replacement of the stock oil coolers, and there is an option to get two (dual)
theres a big one and a small one.

crooked willow sells a dual oil cooler upgrade, comes with two bigger oil coolers for stock R1 mounting (should mount in any other FD) and some other ****, i forget what else it comes with. $800

if you buy the34 rowis it necessary to have two. i means it is already 2.25x bigger, would you need two?

I don't think two huge oil coolers are necessary. However, I'm the type that likes to go all out and I would purchase the dual oil coolers, just to satisfy my needs. I'm interested in these oil coolers and will most likely purchase these in a few months.

no, but they help keep your car running cooler. They cool oil, not air intake temperature

IT will allow your oil to last longer and your engine to run cooler.

i think i would rather have the one for 800. sence you dont really need the upgrade. I guess this is the kinda **** that yo buy when you absolutely have nothing else to do to the car.hehe Im alond way from that though. I dont even have a car yet.

The dual's are overkill.....your oil can only be cooled so much......the only way it will help to have dual oil coolers is when the oil is hot, it will cool it faster, not run it cooler than say a single cooler. By me switching to Mobil 1 Super Syn, my oil never goes past 200-210 when racing and it the temps go down consiserably faster on their own....my cruising temps are aroung 185-190 on a 80F day.....this is with the stock oil cooer in a touring RX.......hope this helps..........

IMHO, the dual 34 rows would be necessary for a very hard core track car running an oil-only turbo, no water jacket. While the two 25-row cooler kit is nice (from Rotary Extreme or from CWR), I'd go with the one 34-row. Why? Fewer lines, fewer connections, less to go wrong and to leak. Lighter too. The only downside is that if you're using the stock nose, a duct would definitely be needed whereas if you have say a GTC front, one could probably get away with not running a duct (although I would anyway).

It wouldn't be smart to use any oil cooler that isn't well ducted.

This is a very naive statement. Two big oil coolers may be ovekill for the everyday street driven car, but for a track car it is a must. When I do an oil cooler upgrade i am getting biggest coolers I can fit in the nose of the car. Try pushing your car all out for a 20 minute session on a 100 degree day and then take a look at your oil temps. I think you might agree with me then.

The reason to have two smaller oil coolers compared to one huge one (like the RE version) is because good ducting is a must. I really don't think the small openings on most bumpers would supply enough air to adequately cool a REALLY large oil cooler, particularly without an airtight duct.

The best way to go is with two well-ducted coolers, like the CWC setup. Perhaps slightly bigger, but not grossly larger.

Yeah, sure, what the hell, I'll make a NOOB comment and ask: Isn't this really all about surface area? A bigger cooler has higher capacity, but less surface area per unit volume than the dual smaller units, no? Higher cooling efficiency to my small brain. And has anyone put fans on these things? Noob question there, don't know where/how you'd mount 'em, as I get the car on MONDAY. A whole weekend...

Too a point...
Like any heat exhcnager, you need to look at core design which directly translates to core efficiency.&nbsp How the core is built (i.e. - extrenal fin design, internal fin design, flow rates, core brazing/welding) is a big variable here.

I run two stock oil coolers in series on my 430hp FC. Relatively cheap, Very effective. Carl Byck

I think a good set of R1 coolers, is good enough for everyday driving.I have mine sealed so all the airflow goes tru the cooler my temps are about 165F on the highway 180-200F in everday driving I have never seen anything past 200F and I live in 80F+ S Fla.

actually sealing off the oil cooler entirely isn't too good of an idea. the air going thru the ducts in the nose toward the oil cooler will have a very high velocity. it'll cause the air to bounce straight off the face of the oil cooler. if you leave it the way it is stock, where it's basically open before the oil cooler, incoming air will dramatically slow down at that point and will dwell there. the slow airflow velocity will cause greater pressure and actually suck air through the oil cooler.

I sealed around the oil coolers so none of the airflow could go around them. This way all the air flows thru the coolers for better heat extraction.
