Question about new Mazda seals

Hmmm, I got my new 2pc, 2mm Mazda seals and have a silly question. Why do they glue the end piece on? I've never assembled a rotary w/ 1 piece seals so quite frankly, how do you put the springs in? I'm also assuming the end pieces go toward the engine rear, as well? If they do, couldn't I just break them apart?

Also, my rotor grooves are very slightly wider at the ends on one rotor. The middle has about .003 seal to groove clearance while out near the ends, at the edge, are at the limit of .006. Should I be concerned? I really want to do this right this time since my lousy Hurley's let me down twice now.

the ends are glued on so the little corner piece doesnt
fly across the room when you push the seal into the
rotor with the springs.
and that kind of wear isnt really a good thing but lots
of rebuilders use them like this.

So I actually slide the whole seal/end piece in, w/ the springs too, all together? How do you get the bottom corner seal groove to line up w/ the apex seal. Or, do you mean put the seals on the rotor first w/ the springs, then compress them while the housing is lowered over the top?

I've rebuilt a few engines now but all were either 2 or 3pc seal's where the seals are put in first, the springs pushed in and then the corner piece put on after the housing is lowered over.

Yeah, I re-measured the grooves and only the last 1-2mms are at .006. Most of the groove is at .003. Probably not optimal but I guess ok.

thanks, Scott

Yea I've never had THAT happen.

BTW, I use a drop of super glue if I'm reusing seals to keep the tip seal on the main part.

Scott. I put the rotor in place with the apex in it to keep the corner seal aligned. Then pull it (the apex seal) out (carefully) , then insert the spring and push the whole assembly in together.

I'm sure it'll make more sense when I put it together tonight. I just think it'll be difficult to pull it out, then put it back, while keeping both springs in place.

Hmmm, well I offered my advice based on my only experience, which is rebuilding 12A's. Shoulda mentioned that, sorry.

You're starting to scare me...
If this is your first time rebuilding an engine, follow the Mazda factory service manual very carefully - it'll be obvious why the triangle assist piece is glued on if you follow Mazda's method of installing the apex seal springs.

*YOU* try measuring apex seal length if it's not glued together....

Trust me Ted, I scare myself sometimes....

Actually, I'm just probably too ****. I've put together several engines but was bit by Hurley 2mm seals at the HP I'm making(twice). I've just alway's assembled w/ 2pc Hurley's or glued together 3pc(w/out the corner pc glued). I'm sure when I put them in, it'll make sense.

So your going to make me read? I think I have the manual on my PC at home.
