My luck finally ran out !!!!

Yesterday at a local import race here in Florida on my first qualifying run in which I ran a 9.33@135mph my motor finally gave up at around the 900ft mark!
I said goodbye to good old faithful which have been in there from Dec 99. It had just under 100 runs on it of which 19 were 9second ones and over 75 passes on the dyno also.
As for the run itself the car spun the wheels really bad in 1st and 2nd gear which resulted in a 1.41 60 ft where low 1.30's are the norm but that was the result of having the wheelie bar too low and causing it to unload the rear tires. The good thing about the run was that it looked like we finally got the handling problems under control and all that was left was to adjust the wheelie bar to get the best traction. I was hoping to break into the 8's with this motor but I guess I was pushing it too long without a rebuild!
It was also cool to finally meet some people form the forum, Spyfish, Kabooski and Tim just to mention a few.

I have a new combination ready for next year but a friend of mine is going to the IDRC finals in La and he wanted me to go along with him since he's got a two car trailor so I might just have to patch up good old betsy and just run it for one last time. For me this is an opportunity of a life time that I cannot refuse!

So what let go? You say you can patch it up so I'm thinking an apex or some kind of seal?

Sorry to hear about that. What class do you run in? Good luck if you go down to LA.

When I say patch it up I meant just to repair what was damaged.
I have not opened the motor as yet but it don't have any compression in the rear!
The only thing I'm worried about is the turbo. That's the only part I can't patch up!

Hey Greg!
Thanks man!
I have the T-76 that I bought used that just needs a rebuild. I could always use that as the donor for the T-72!

That seems to be a common problem with the decent HP guys. I know of three people that have had that happen in the last year.

Best of luck to you Chris.

I actually melted the front rotor! The sleeve had melted as did the side seals! Here are some pics of the damage:

I just opened the motor and the damage was interesting!
One apex seal is missing in action. Off course it took out the turbine wheel with it. On the same rotor the other two seals are still there of which one of them has a crack and the other looks the very same as if it's only been in there for two days!
No cracked corner seals. All the apex springs measured up to spec like new.The apex seals measured in at 8.20mm in height.
All the bearings are like new where I thought they would have been almost gone for the length of time that they have been in there and the abuse of 9500+ rpm would have done to them.
The most interesting part which I found kind of weird was that there's no sign of carbon build up present anywhere on any of the rotors not even on the sides or on the combustion pockets.
All I need now is one rotor, rotor housing and a turbine wheel!
Tommorow I'm gonna have pics of the motor.

Hi Crispeed,

Sorry to hear your news

Pity the Apex seal went walkabout, not good news for that turbo!

I think you'll find that carbon doesn't get much chance to build up with 30psi being shoved in there !!! hehehe

Can I assume it was the back rotor that let go?

Good luck with the rebuild!

EIGHTS remember

Cheers,

I had a motor like that once, it started out making 540 by the end it was at 390 without juice. We had flattened out the springs from detonation That was the one with the broken Dowel pin I wrote about a while back

The Race fuel is what keeps everything clean in the motor, I found you only get carbon buildup on pump gas.

I'm in the same boat, I have a turbo (T04E 60-1 .6 comp 1.15 A/R P-Trim) that had an apex seal go through it. What do I do to fix it?
Have a turbo place do it all (which place, how much $)?
Buy a new exhaust wheel and put it in myself? (from where, Turbonetics?)
Thanx!!

I now believe what caused the motor to let go. The ignition misfired during a NOS run and that's a big NO NO!
To make a long story short my distributor was full of water due to me towing the car around on the trailer without the hood scoop mounted to the hood while it was raining and guess where the dist. is located. I guess no matter how safe you try to make and do things it's the little important stuff that you forget that can cause major problems.
