How to , "Tune"

Ok, I have heard this word thrown around about a billion times on this forum. Tune Tune Tune

Ok, that is great.

But, what does it really mean? When somebody tunes a car.

Is it a simple thing like throwing the car on a dyno and tuning the S-AFC with a wideband.

Or is it more well rounded like taking into account
-Ignition
-Compents intergration
-AFR
-Intake Temps
-Boost
-Back pressure

If it is well rounded what shops offer such a service? How do you learn how to do that?

Depending on who you talk to it means different things.

I've heard of people throwing an M2 ECU in their car and saying it's "tuned". Hmmm... OK

My definition of tuning is locating the balance between power and reliability that is right for the customer. So on my own car, I play with the fuel injection amount and the ignition timing and the boost to get it running where I want it. I use a wideband which logs to my laptop + PowerFC + Datalogit to see how I'm doing.

I'm not a "tuner" by the way since I only tune my own car (so far)

My definition of "tune" or "tuning" would be someone (a tuner) who adjusts parameters to ideally suit the needs of the driver while maintaining the best overall performance.

Things such as adjusting the fuel delivery, monitoring air/fuel ratios under various situations, exhaust temps, etc. There are numerous things that a true "tuner" can do. (Keep in mind that there are tuners who focus on suspension, while others focus on engine performance, etc.).

Throwing in a "tuned" ecu, does not mean the car is "tuned". At least not in my book.
