Help! Coolant seals too long!

Finally I'm putting together this 12A, and gosh dang it the inner coolant seals are just too long! Both these reds seals that look like mazda/rebuild kit parts,
and the o-rings in a kit I purchased. The outer fit good. The inner, TOO LONG TO FIT in the groove. Here is a pic showing how bad it is. What to do?
Can they be cut and made shorter? Am I doing something wrong? Did the housing shrink?

The red seals came with the car/engine gasket kit.
The o-ring kit was from ebay, and says 12a and 13b, so I assume they would fit a 12A. Is a 86+ longer? Could I shorten it? It has a splice in the red one already, but looks a little difficult to duplicate.
Or will o-ring failure occur as in the Shuttle Challenger.

Appreciate the help!
