Drivetrain loss with TH350?

Still deciding on which transmission to use.

Say I'm making 500whp. How much would I dyno after I installed a TH350 with 6,000-6,500 rpm stall converter ?

prob 350 - I'd say 20% loss easy through a slush-box.

Go to Supra Forums and see for yourself.... torque convertors absolutely eat power.

Torque convertors are definatley power consumers. It is certainly a percentage of peak power due to the efficiency (or inefficiency in this case) of the trans. Typically I have seen numbers of 12-15% loss for a manual tranny and 20% for an auto.

With 500RWHP through a stock manual that puts you around 568-588FWHP. This would then be 454-470RWHP with an auto at 20% loss. So yes, an ADDITIONAL loss of 50RWHP is likely when going to this over a manual. Total loss in the driveline would be around 120 or so with auto.

-Chris

Edit: In retrospect, I would add that the driveline loss on my MANUAL G35 is nearly 18%.... so I could easily see an auto being more than 20% maybe 23% or even 25%. Lots of stuff plays into that.

Yes, that's the figures I have been told. I didn't think there was anyway I would lose 150whp from my invented 500whp figure.

for mainly drag use, th350 can be upgraded with lock up TC's, soo power loss would be minimal. TC just becomes mutiplate clutch no slip.

Yea - but you can't lock it out of the hole - or usually until top gear. The convertor is what keeps you in the power.

Drivetrain loss is going to be most evident on a non-lockup type converter. If it's locked up it'll be pretty close to that of a manual.

It doesn't matter what the loss is anyway does it? unless your just going for bragging rights. Hell, the Virtual Works Supra used to only dyno at 800rwhp but it was running high 8's at 155+ and weighed 3550lbs.

I know what your asking but i thought i'd just throw in my little sarcasm. It does kinda suck to say your car only makes 560rwhp when it would be showing 644rwhp if it was manual......(of course that was also just an example).
