Do all bulders of NA rotaries eventually go turbo?
My FC is impractical as it is, even though it gets "good" mileage (18 in town having fun), has stock size tires and stock suspension bushings, etc. But the car is so good that I don't drive it on a daily basis and take the beater Integra instead. I've had my fun rebuilding and streetporting my S4 NA, porting its manifold, building a ram / cold air intake, tweaking the fuel curve a bit, etc. But it seems that those of us who build up an NA eventually follow our mechanical abilities into turbo land.
For a car that I only drive for fun anyways, part of me wants to just slap a TII IM, ECU, injectors, turbo, FMIC etc. on there and run 5-8 psi on water injection with the NA block. I was a NA-only type car enthusiast until someone gave me a ride in a very mild FD, which totally kicked a$$.

Hate to say it...but its true. Except for the most hardcore n/a guys. I'm guessing you got a ride in Jeffs H's car? n/a cars are fun, but when it comes down to it, they're realy kina slow. I do however like having a n/a car for a daily driver, as you can realy beat on em all day long. But on the other hand its a awesome feeling to have 450+rwhp....for those times when you're merging onto I-5, and that tractor/trailor is in your way.

I was a n/a guy, then went to TII, then went 400 rwhp, now going for 600 rwhp, but also going for 200-250 n/a rwhp in my other FC, just for kicks.. I have been playing with idea of turboing that car, but have decided I want to taste the power of N/a's I saw in Japan, there, they have alot of n/a cars that would show tailights to alot of turbo cars... Once I heard and saw a 13b-rew n/a with a bridgeport push 342 rwhp, I was hooked.. The engine was crisp, revved quickly, twisted the car with every touch of the throttle, truly a sight to behold.. I am not sure I can accomplish their power levels but if I can do over 200 n/a , that would be good...Max

Have had a variety of RX-7's over time..
1st gen Turbo (draw through)
T2's
and various N/a's including a ported RX-3
I dunno... after all the work etc.. I have to stay with N/A personally..
Dont get me Wrong... I LOVE the 3rd gen with 500+ to the wheels.. the rush coming on boost is really amazing.. and a whole helluva lot of fun.
Even the TII with mild mods is fun..
BUT.... My N/A sport.. well it is lightened.. a LOT.. and the punch out of the hole... and keeping up with/stomping most TII's that didnt have wallets thrown at them.. kinda makes it nice.
The biggest PITA for me.. as I work on all my friends cars etc.. is the BITCH you have working on simple things on turbo cars. They have soo much extra crap on them that is just sucks to do general maintenance on em.
I Love the ability to get to anything on a N/A that has had all emissions and factory computer gear stripped off. That and the fact that it is dead reliable in cold weather.. or when it is in the high 90s and humid as hell.
Plus... cant beat 30+ MPG on trips at 80+ MPH
Turbos just cant do that on a daily basis... or rather.. there are few that can.
On the track? (Track Day events) Yep there are some turbos that out run my light sport.... but they have a lot of money in them... But for the most part.. there are a lot of Turbo cars that just dont have the pull down the long straits.
Go back to turbo?? Umm No.. not currently. I may make one some day.. but it will just be a itch to scratch. I may go the 20B single route again.. like with Evil's car. But not any time soon.

I don't' know how any rotary can get above 30mpg? Let alone at 80mph? I got 29mpg at 60mph using a stock 12a FB with gutted exhuast only.
Now, as for a n/a, my '88 6port SE gets me 26mpg @~70mph. And more like 19mpg when driving 90mph+ normally.
I couldn't agree more. I mod'd my FB car to use a S4 turbo with a blowthrough plenom I wielded together. I'll I can say is: WOW! WAY more torque then a n/a equivlant with the same horsepower at a super high rpm. Like my bridgeport I decommissioned, too much lack of drivablity, really loud and really peaky power is not the highways best friend.
SO yeah, turbo makes the mildport or such pretty good for serious horsepower with no huge noise increases or drops in mpg except when booooosting too much.

The general rule of thumb is that once you go turbo... you never go back.

boost is the only way to go. I will have turbo cars my whole life. N/A is good for daily driving though. Once you feel the insane amount of turbo power, you will feel the same as I.

i will only get a TII if i can keep my na. there is a BIG difference between the two and i love both of them. i like the NA due to its nice steady power curve. and i like the turbo punch it and get a bear hug from your seat.
I must say that i don't think i would like drifting in a turbo to laggy in mid drift "now i may be wrong", but i can tell you its fun in the NA.
