were they just pulling parts out of bins and slapping them into the rotors?

The rotor assembly tool is neat. As for them just throwing the parts together, remember that the RENSIS motors are clearance coded so you can just pull an F-I, J-M, N-Q or R-U side seal out of a bin and know it will fit. Corner seals are also sized "S" small and "L" large, though the parts system now shows both sizes as being superceded by one part number. Not sure what that is all about. Looking through all the RENESIS parts, they are making a LOT of changes. Apex seals are on the seventh part number, for example.

Beats the hell out of rubber bands now doesn't it. Did notice the lack of any kind of assembly lube though. Wonder what they do in place of that for initial startup.

and after building so many motors you really don't need tools to know that something is within spec, sideseals for example all you need to do is feel and see the gap and know whether it is well within clearance or is marginal.

I believe this was posted some months ago, I've had another youtube link saved from that posting. Anyone interested in making or somehow procuring these assembly tools? I'd love one!

It's not in the Mazda 13B-MSP engine manual, so it must be a factory only tool. That makes sense, since you would only ever need one in an assembly line environment. With all the other valuable tools you probably don't have but could use, it makes no sense to invest in a tool that only saves 5 minutes per motor (if that) and is totally dispensible. Just my opinion.

Is that a metal plug in the center of the corner seal? where Fd uses a rubber plug and a slot for the Apex seal, what is going on there?? Ron

Yes. Unlike the earlier engines, the RENSIS (13B-MSP) exposes the corner seal plug to combustion gas, so it has to be metal now. This is a result of having side exhaust ports. It is also the reason Mazda went to the really short apex seal design, so the groove would not fill up with carbon when exposed to the exhaust port.
