AZ Anybody here do an RallyCross?

Hey,
I was wondering about any experiences with SCCA Rally Cross events. I started in off-road but have road expierence and thought the blend of the two woulld be a good combination. It seems that others think so as well as RallyCross events; both with the SCCA and other sanctioning bodies, are becoming more popular.

I'm starting a first gen project to make a RallyCross car.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

GD

Hi
We have a couple of 1gen that runs european rallycross with good results.
I dont know what your regulations says about how you are allowed to build your car so i cant tell you what to do.
If you are allowed to build a new suspension then the first i would do is a new front and rear suspension with new damper and springs.
On a fb the stock 4 link is bad and will break easy if you run on a bumpy track so a new 4link with longer arms and with a new position.
The stock rear axel is weak and will bend so use a stronger axel and use a axel were you can find low gear ratio. You need to run a pretty low rear end ratio becuse the rotary engine has a low torque. A close ratio dog ring gearbox is to prefer so you can swich gear fast without problem.
There are many changes you can do to get a fast and realiable car.

There are several levels. I would be doing "Prepared Class." There is some latitude.
What do you have in your car for a rear end?
What engine mods?
How much RWHP?

Thanks for the advice. It really helps!

All I can really say is, if you're not running in Modified, your options for doing anything are severely limited, so focus on just driving the damned thing.

SCCA Rallycross has runs that are very short, 30-60 seconds with a maximum speed of 45-60mph depending on class. There are usually no straights. Basically, you have no time to shift. I set my car up to be a "one gear car", I leave it in Second gear (stock trans, 4.10 final) and this is good for any course. If I slow down below the torque peak, I just do a clutch kick to get it back into the powerband.

Nobody uses dog boxes or low final drives because they aren't necessary, not when driver skill is far more important. In the classes where alternate drivetrain components are allowed (Modified only) there are better ways to do it.

A car that can corner well will do far better than a car that can accelerate well, because you spend the whole time cornering and no time accelerating.

Good advice from experience. I want to make the car SCCA legal, but probably not run an SCCA event as they're too damn far to drive to. There are many events that are similar , just not SCCA, in th Southwest.
Mine is an 85 GSL-SE but the injection does'nt work so well, so it might be just a 48 IDA and a dist.. I don't want to be chasing electrical gremlins or parts for a 30 year old car! Besides, I have the engine already running.

Thanks!

Ditching the EFI may throw you into Modified, where you will get beat up on by 100hp Golfs and Civics. (This is not entirely fair. They beat up on EVERYBODY... FTD is often somebody in SF) Alternate intake manifolds and carburetors are allowed for originally-carbureted cars, but I don't know if this extends to originally injected cars. My rulebook's on the other computer.

The biggest problem you'll face will be the front suspension bottoming out. Springs in the 200lb range seem to work well with the stock front end arrangement, I think one of the lowering spring sets has a front rate along those lines.

There's talk of making separate Mod FWD/Mod RWD classes, but for now, well... I was the highest placing RWD at the 2010 E.S.C. (by a decent margin!) but only came in fifth or sixth in class...
