One more pic of the Nissan T5 showing the rearward shifter position.

Regular G-Force T5 shifter position.

I just bought a used GForce T5 box from a fellow racer. He's sheared the dogs off 3rd gear so I'm going to be on the phone with G-force about parts soon. I'm anxious to see how expensive the repairs are.

cheers,

Looks interesting, but at $9K for the Guru box, I think that the T5 (even with the mods required) is a better deal.

Here is your solution to the rear diff problem. This is a complete subframe solution that eliminates the PPF.

I just ordered one I'll let you know how it turns out when I'm finished.

So far it's been very good. Well worth the price for what you get.
As for the shifter location if you use the early Nissan 'Z's' tailhousing since those cars used a T-5 from factory it will place the shifter approx. 4 inches rearward.

Here's a pic of the tailhousing from early camaro T5.

great info, thanks, had i knows that I would have used an old Z t5 housing instead of the cobra R one I got my hands on.

Damian it shouldn't be too hard to put a different tail housing onto a t5 case.

yeah maybe i will do it as a winter mod... id hate to take apart the new trans though :-)

Id rather send it to gforce and have them do it proper like :-) lol

A nice remote shifter solution would work too.

Yeah, that remote shifter is a good idea, a lot of the race cars and the local scca events use them.

Anyone ever used a gearbox from this company? http://www.libertysgears.com/

Im looking into maybe getting the TKO 600 gearbox. But im not sure if it will handle 600rwhp and 9000 rpm.

I hope i can use your thread for this Damian

Thanks for the informative thread damian. I'm looking at various dogbox options for my 1st Gen racer. The T-5 option looks good. Shame they don't do a dog engaged 0.82 fifth gear. That ratio would suit my setup well.

The Tremec TKO 500/600 dogbox that libertygears modifies has a 0.82 fifth gear.

It was only one or two years of 280ZX Turbo. All non turbo L6s used Nissan transmissions, and the first few years of 280ZX Turbo were automatic only because they couldn't trust their in-house manual to the turbo torque.

(The good bit - know what automatic they used? Hint: Look under an FB!)

Amazing. So would it be possible to have helical style gears put in? Would that completely defeat all the strength of the box? Would it decrease the noise considerably or is the noise being created elsewhere?

They do helical gears too (syncro and dog ring), which are supposedly stronger than stock T5 gears, but are at less of an angle so will make more noise than stock, not as much as straight cut gears though.

Were you able to retain the stock throw-out bearing? Im assuming you are using the stock shift for too, correct? Id really appreciate seeing pics of the throw-out assembly.

Well, since I'm also a member of the "Sheared off part of 3rd gear in '08 club" (at MAM), I'm very interested in the sturdier transmission.

I got a deal on another trans, but at $350 a piece it'll take quite a few to get to this level. And I still street my car for now, and even though I don't care about that gear noise at all (I actually kind of like it) I'll probably wait a few years before I get to this level.

You're inspiration as usual Damian, keep up the good work and I'll see you at MAM next time you're there and hopefully my transmission holds together, I know yours will :-)

I spoke with a fellow at GeForce and he indicated they were dropping the road race gear set for the T5.
